High above the clouds in Huangshan, Anhui province, a team of 18 brave cleaners known as “spidermen” climb down cliffs (悬崖) to protect the UNESCO World Heritage Site (联合国世界文化遗产地). Among them is Li Peisheng, 51, a national model worker honored for his 25 years of service.
Li’s job involves collecting rubbish from cliffs and saving dropped objects like phones. Working for Huangshan Tourism Development Co, he and his team keep the beauty of famous peaks like Lotus Peak (1,864 m) and Bright Peak (1,860 m). “At first, I trembled while climbing 50-meter cliffs,” Li recalls. “I hit rocks and got hurt, but I learned ta balance.”
Safety is important. Workers operate in pairs—one collects rubbish while the other controls ropes. Li’s first partner, Xie Tianxing, shared eight years of teamwork. Since 2022, he’s partnered with Wang Nianfeng. “A single mistake could be a disaster,” Li says. Applicants must pass strict health checks and safety training.
Twenty years ago, Li climbed 10 times daily to clean up after 800,000 yearly visitors. Today, 4.5 million tourists come to Huangshan yearly, but daily times dropped to 4-5. “People now carry rubbish bags,” Li notes. A mother once told her child, “Don’t litter—see those heroes risking their lives ” In 2022, Li and colleague Hu Xiaochun became guardians of the 1,300-year-old “Guest-Greeting Pine”, a Huangshan symbol.
“We safeguard these mountains for future generations,” Li says. His work, though dangerous, fills him with pride: “Every clean cliff and happy tourist makes it worthwhile.” Thanks to Li and his team, Huangshan’s “cloud-wrapped pines and jagged peaks” remain untouched by time—and rubbish.

The local people call their hometown, Minqin, huqu, or Lake Area. Minqin County, in northwest China’s Gansu Province, however, is one of the driest areas in China, and possibly in the world.
To protect the environment, local communities and volunteers work together to plant saxaul trees (梭梭树). The saxaul tree is a “hero plant” for deserts (沙漠) which has deep roots to hold the soil. That is to say it can survive extreme drought (干旱) and terrible winds, making it perfect for stabilizing (稳固) the desert. Every spring, volunteers from across the country join this meaningful activity.
In 2024, ten energetic teenagers did something brave: they travelled to Minqin and planted 180,000 saxaul trees. Or perhaps it was 180,001—the extra “seed” stood for a growing environmental awareness in their hearts. Their story on TV quickly became popular. The topic “Plant Trees In Minqin” attracted young viewers online. “Saxaul trees can stop deserts!” and “I’m booking a trip to Minqin!” These comments showed Generation Z’s passion for environmental protection.
By March 12, 2025, the movement had grown into a nationwide activity. Thousands of volunteers around China flooded into Minqin to “fight the desert”, aiming to replace sand with green. Recently, the “Plant Trees in Minqin” event was held in Xinglong Village, Minqin County, where volunteers dug holes, watered young trees, and experienced the challenges of desert control. For those who couldn’t attend, online platforms like the National Voluntary Tree-Planting Network offered “cloud planting”—donating money or adopting (认养) trees. Together, these efforts united society in fighting against desertification.
Planting these trees not only helps the environment but also teaches people the importance of ecological (生态的) protection. Local farmers have also benefited. The trees prevent farmland from being buried by sand, ensuring better harvests. These trees are farmers’ lifeline. Without them, the desert would take over their homes.
32. Why is the saxaul tree called a “hero plant”
A. It grows very tall. B. It attracts lots of tourists.
C. It provides fruit for selling. D. It survives desert conditions.
33. What happened after this tree-planting show was covered on TV
A. The price of saxaul trees increased.
B. “Plant Trees In Minqin” became a hot topic.
C. Fewer young people were interested in desert control.
D. People realized planting more trees couldn’t stop sandstorms.
34. What can we know about the “Plant Trees In Minqin” event in 2025
A. It failed to draw public attention. B. Volunteers could also take part in it online.
C. Only local people in Minqin took part in it. D. It was held in a forest far from Minqin County.
35. What is the structure of the passage (①~⑤ for each paragraph)
A. ①—②③④⑤ B. ①②③—④—⑤ C. ①②③—④⑤ D. ①②—③④—⑤
D
Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.
I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene. The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the pouring rain, under an umbrella, barefoot, while her house was in flames (在燃烧中).
The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner’s dog. The captain then waved me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes.” So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went—up the stairs, down the hall, past the “real” firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the master bedroom to get a pair of shoes.
Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the precious dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.
Here, I would offer this reminder: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now.
Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.
36. What was the weather like when the house was on fire
A. It was sunny. B. It was windy. C. It was snowing. D. It was raining heavily.
37. What did the captain ask the writer to do
A. Save the dog. B. Put out the fire. C. Get a pair of shoes. D. Talk with the homeowner.
38. How did the writer feel when he received the captain’s order
A. He felt excited and proud. B. He felt happy and willing to do it.
C He felt angry and refused to do it. D. He felt a bit unhappy but did it anyway.
39. What does the writer learn from this experience
A. It’s not important to help others. B. Only big actions are worth doing.
C. Saving lives is the only important thing. D. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
40. What does the story mainly want to tell us
A. We should only focus on saving lives.
B. We should help others as soon as possible.
C. We should always save shoes for people in need.
D. We should wait until we have enough money to help others.

Norway is known for its citizens’ habit of picking up litter. From cities to hiking trails, Norwegians take pride in keeping their environment clean. But what drives this action Let’s explore the cultural, economic, and educational roots of Norway’s “clean-up mindset (思维模式)”.
Norwegians grow up with an idea called friluftsliv, which emphasizes (强调) a close connection to nature. With nearly 40% of Norway covered by mountains, forests, or coastline, outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and fishing are part of daily life. This connection makes a contribution to developing a sense of responsibility (责任) to protect natural spaces.
Norway’s recycling system turns litter into rewards. Since 2014, the country has operated a “Pant” system for plastic bottles and cans. When buying drinks, consumers (消费者) pay an extra 1-3 NOK (about $0.10—$0.30). Returning empty containers to reverse vending machines gives a refund (退款) or donation to charity. This system recovers 97% of plastic bottles, reducing litter while developing recycling habits.
Environmental training begins in kindergarten. Children learn to separate waste and join school clean-up days. A popular saying in Norwegian schools is: “There’s no such thing as ‘someone else’s rubbish.’”
Norway has anti-littering laws. Fines for dropping litter can reach 3,000 NOK ($300), but social manners matter more. Public shaming is rare, yet collective responsibility is strong. During Norway’s yearly community volunteer day, neighbors clean shared spaces together.
Norwegians don’t pick up litter just because it’s a rule—it’s a way of life shaped by love for nature, smart policies, and community spirit. Their actions remind us that environmental protection starts with personal choices.
Clean nature isn’t a gift; it’s a promise we make to each other.
Norway’s Clean-Up Culture
What Norwegians pick up ____56____ habitually, creating a clean country.
Why It’s a ____57____ of their love for nature, smart policies and community spirit.
