In recent years, we have learned a lot about Yingge dance from social media. Its exciting performance at the 2025 Spring Festival Gala also impressed many people.
This winter vacation, I went back to my hometown Shantou, a place known for its rich culture and traditions. Luckily, I had the chance to watch Yingge dance up close. I stood on the street with many locals and visitors, waiting for the arrival of the performers. Soon, a red flag with the words “Shengqian Yingge Team” led the way, followed by a big group of energetic dancers. The performers wore bright, colorful clothes and carried wooden sticks. I heard the sound of gongs (锣) and sticks. They moved their sticks skillfully, making them seem like part of their bodies. Sometimes, they shouted, making the performance even more exciting. The mix of music, movement and sound brought joy to everyone.
The biggest surprise was seeing my uncle dance! After the show, he told me that Yingge Dance came from old stories about heroes. We made the dance faster and clothes more colorful to make young people interested. I realized they weren’t just keeping the tradition, but also changing it for today. That’s why Shantou now has over 50 Yingge teams, many with teenage members. By mixing old and new ideas, we develop and renew (更新) the cultural tradition. Traditions can stay alive if we pass them on in creative ways.

A. To list the steps of performing Yingge Dance.
B. To discuss the history of Shantou’s traditions.
C. To compare Yingge Dance with other modern dances.
D. To share how a cultural tradition is being renewed.

Have you ever entered a room and suddenly forgotten why you went there It is because the brain often considers going through a door as entering a new place. This causes you to lose your memory for a while and forget why you went there.
This is just one example about how our memory works in our brain. Forgetting really makes people unhappy, but our brain can only work in this way—by staying in a balance of forgetting something easily and remembering something clearly. Our memory shapes who we are and allows us to form relationships. It is also a tool for keeping us alive. By learning what’s dangerous and remembering simple information like where to live comfortably or where to find food, humans make better choices about what will be good for us and what to avoid.
When learning new information, whether it’s a challenging skill or a name of an object, the brain forms new connections between neurons (神经元). The busier the neural map is, the smarter you will become. But just as a smart phone slows down when it stores too much information, your brain also slows down when it has too much to deal with. It will actively forget some unused information or unimportant feelings by making neurons less connected. This helps prevent too much information and control terrible memories to keep people calm for daily life.
Forgetting also builds creativity. Long-term memories (长期记忆) may make our thoughts and actions too rigid (僵化的) and prevent the brain forming new ideas. When you repeat doing things in the same way, your brain will get used to rigid habits and thoughts.
Forgetting is sometimes considered a weakness, but it actually plays an important role. By clearing out unnecessary information, the brain can better take notice of the important information in order to help shape us and keep our mind healthy.
33. How does the writer start the article
A. By giving an example. B. By comparing numbers.
C. By offering suggestions. D. By using famous sayings.
34. What does “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. A smart phone. B. The memory. C. The brain. D. The neuron.
35. According to Paragraph 4, forgetting can _________.
A. keep people calm for daily life B. encourage the growth of creating
C. clean up unnecessary information D. help people get away from danger
36. What’s the best title for this passage
A. How can we have a better memory
B. Why is forgetting not only a weakness
C. Which is more important, forgetting or remembering
D. When is the best time to learn the challenging information
D
Cook was making little “tuk-tuk-tuk” sounds. Sadio had her hand over her mouth. Hans was trying so hard to understand. Only Godber’s man was enjoying himself. It was his story.
“What’s wrong What’s happened ”
“There’s been an awful accident,” Cook said. “A man’s been killed.”
“A man killed! Where How When ”
But Godber’s man wanted to tell the story.
“You know those little cottages (小屋) just down the road from here, Miss ” Of course she knew them. “Well, there’s a young man called Scott living there. He has a horse and cart. Something frightened the horse in town this morning, the cart (马车) turned over, and Scott fell in the road on the back of his head. Killed.”
“Dead!” Laura stared at Godber’s man.
“Dead when they picked him up,” Godber’s man said. “They were taking the body home as I was coming here.” Then he said, “He’s left a wife and five little ones.”
“Jose, come here!” Laura took her sister’s hand and pulled her across the kitchen and through the door.
“Jose” she said, “how can we stop everything ”
“Stop everything, I aura!” cried Jose. “What do you mean ”
“Stop the garden party, of course.”
“Stop the garden party My dear Laura, don’t be unreasonable. Of course we can’t stop the party. Nobody expects us to. Don’t be so silly.”
“But we can’t possibly have a garden party with a man dead just outside the front gate.”
That really was silly, because the Sheridans’ house was on a hill, and the cottages were right down at the bottom of the hill. There was a wide road between them. True, they were still much too near. They were not suitable neighbours for people like the Sheridans.
The cottages were ugly little low brown things. Nothing but rubbish grew in their gardens. Even the smoke coming from their chimneys (烟囱) looked poor. The people who lived in them lived by washing other people’s clothes, or mending shoes or cleaning chimneys. And they all had far too many children.
When the Sheridan children were little, they were not allowed to go near the cottages, for fear that they heard bad language or caught some awful disease. But now that they were grown up, Laura and Laurie sometimes walked past. It was dirty and unpleasant, but Laura and Laurie believed that they should experience all sides of life. They must go everywhere; they must see everything.
“Think how that poor woman will feel if she hears a band playing,” said Laura.
“Oh, Laura!” Jose was seriously angry. “If you want to stop a band every time someone has an accident, you’re going to have a very difficult life. I’m just as sorry about it as you are.”
37. What were Scott’s living conditions like
A. Poor. B. Safe. C. Modern. D. Comfortable.
38. What does the underlined word “frightened” probably mean
A. Scared. B. Calmed. C. Excited. D. Amazed.
39. Why did Laura want to stop the garden party
A. Because she thought the party was boring.
B. Because someone expected her to stop it.
C. Because a man died outside the front gate.
D. Because she couldn’t afford to hold the party.
40. What might the next paragraph of the passage be about
A. How Jose had fun in the garden party.
B. How Laura succeeded in stopping the party.
C. How Laura invited Scott’s children to the party.
D. How Laurie stopped his two sisters from fighting.

Less Stress, Better Life
Nowadays, we teenagers have a lot of stress while growing up. We have heavy schoolwork and often stay up late to finish it. Our parents are strict with us and expect too much, which adds more pressure.
To reduce stress, we can ask teachers for help when facing difficulties. Exercising regularly and listening to music are also good ways to relax. Besides, talking with friends or sharing feelings with family can make us feel better.
In my opinion, stress isn’t always bad. It’s a part of life and can push us to work harder. However, we should learn to manage it properly. By finding the right balance, we can study happily and grow up healthily. Let’s embrace a less stressful life!
