On August 3rd 2024, 21-year-old Chinese player Zheng Qinwen beat another tennis player and won the women’s singles (女单) gold at the Paris Olympics. It was China’s second Olympic gold medal in tennis, following a women’s doubles (女双) title won by Li Ting and Sun Tiantian in Athens 2004, and the first in singles.
After making history by becoming the first Asia-born player to win a gold medal in a tennis singles event at the Olympics, Zheng said, “In our hearts, the honor of our country is always more valuable than that of ourselves. Zheng regarded Li Na as an idol when she started learning tennis as a kid. On Jan 25th, 2014, Li Na became the first Asian player to win the Australian Open women’s singles. The Fredericksburg Spring Festival It’s time once again for the biggest event of the year in Fredericksburg. This year, the festival will take place from May 1 to 5. When using the escalator (自动扶梯) in Singapore, you should stand on the left and walk on the right. This allows those who want to walk up to go around you easily. Singapore also provides separate cycling and walking paths, so you should make sure you walk on the right paths. This keeps everyone a bit safer and prevents overcrowding.
Although Singapore has taken up a large number of new technologies into daily life, many areas still see the value of cash (现金). So having cash in hand is essential. For example, some smaller neighbourhood shops may prefer customers to pay cash.
In Singapore, the first thing you need to do is get some tap water (自来水). The water is carefully tested, so it’s safe to drink straight from the tap. Bottled water is widely available but it’s expensive, tap water can help you save money.
Of course, there are some things that you can’t do. In Singapore, for example, the sale and import of chewing gum is not allowed, meaning you cannot even bring gum with you when you enter. To keep public transportation clean, Singapore also has strict rules on behaviour while riding. The picture above is a good example.

Helen Keller had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. At first, she thought something had fallen from her newly renovated (翻修) house. But as she walked to the front of the house, she saw a small crowd gathering on the sidewalk outside.
As she walked toward the crowd, she saw a boy lying in a pool of blood near a broken motorbike. His leg was almost cut off at the knee. Luckily, when Helen asked about his condition, the young man could still talk, even though he was in great pain.
Helen had knowledge of first aid and had also taken a British Red Cross first aid course. She used her training to make a quick assessment (评估) of the situation. Then she ran back inside her home to get several thick towels to stop the bleeding.
As Helen returned back with the towels, someone from the crowd had called an ambulance (救护车), but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel to press the wound until help arrived,” Helen said. Then she successfully managed to control the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived.
Unluckily, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the simple but effective first aid skills Helen used, the results could have been far worse.
“Knowing first aid gave me the confidence to look at the situation, to stay calm, and most importantly, to step forward to offer help. I feel so happy that my first aid knowledge helped me save a stranger’s life,” Helen said.
