In 2004, when Austin was nine years old, his family received a four-minute DVD from World Vision about Maggie, a little Zambian girl who had lost her family to AIDS. Maggie had no school, no bed and no food.
After seeing the DVD Austin couldn’t help thinking how awful his life would be without his parents. He was really touched by Maggie’s story, calling it his “Maggie moment”, which opened Austin’s eyes to the millions of AIDS orphans (孤儿) in Zambia.
After begging his dad to let him do something, Austin was put in touch with World Vision. Dana Buck from the organization suggested Austin take something he was passionate about to raise money. Austin loved basketball and decided to hold a fund-raising event where he would shoot free throws for money. Originally, he called it “Baskets of Hope” and decided to hold it on World AIDS Day. Austin shot 2,057 free throws on the scheduled day, representing the 2,057 kids who would be orphaned during a six-hour school day by AIDS. Individuals in his community agreed to sponsor him by raising over $3,000, enough to help eight orphans. But Austin wasn’t satisfied.
“That very first year I didn’t really think much toward the future,” said Austin. “The second year I wanted to get 1,000 of my friends to join me.” That year Austin changed the name of his project into “Hoops for Hope”. He, along with his dad, went around to dozens of churches and schools and told them about it. Austin reached his goal: 1,000 friends shooting free throws for orphans. The third year, in 2006, Austin raised enough funds to build a school in Zambia.
In 2007, they raised over $200,000 for a medical testing center in Sinazongwe. And in 2008 they raised $290,000 for a second medical center, along with 1,000 caregiver kits and 1,000 bicycles for caregivers in Zambia.
Now the young man’s charity has gone global and raised more than $2.5 million. More than 40,000 people in 27 countries have participated. All funds raised through the free throw marathons go directly to care for orphan children in AIDS-affected areas.
“What I’ve learned from doing Hoops for Hope is that it can take just one kid to make a difference,” he explained. “One kid just has to have a passion. You can make a difference in the lives of anybody, just by wanting to do something.”

Humans have always assumed that there is a huge gulf between animal behavior and human development. However, recent research into animals shows that animals are continuously designing innovative methods to finish their tasks. Examining the nature and results of their creativity can help us understand evolution.
Research shows that animals too can be creative. By inventing new behavioral patterns and adjusting their behavior to new contexts, as well as to changes in social and ecological environments, researchers show that animal innovation too can be diverse. For instance, chimpanzees (猩猩) use tools such as sharp spines and stalks to remove the hearts of palm vegetables from trees. Herring gulls (鲜鱼海鸥) found out quite a cruel way of killing rabbits-drowning them in the sea.
Innovative species tend to survive when they enter new places, but novel behavior cannot be recognized unless “normal” behavior is studied. Researchers can now count and document the innovations that have been created by species, which would help them to quantify their creativity. Studies also show us that all animals are not equally inventive, with primates (灵长目动物) tending to be more innovative due to their bigger brains.
The greatest scientific significance has been the innovation shown by animals such as apes, capuchins and macaques among primates. These species of primates possess the biggest brains in proportion to their body sizes. They are also heavy tool users. Their broad diets and complex forms of learning are also insightful. They indicate an evolutionary strategy that gave them new solutions to life’s challenges.
However, even if these animals show innovativeness, they do not have the ability to improve upon solutions of others. Unless they share information accurately and copy each other’s inventions. their creative inventions are likely to vanish before they can be innovated further. This ability can be managed only by humans, for we are able to build on shared knowledge.

Whenever I order food for delivery, I play a little game to guess how many sets of tableware (餐具) the restaurant will provide with my meal. Sometimes restaurants will throw in two, three or four sets for just one order. But I rarely need any tableware at all, and the waste goes into the trash or collects dust in a kitchen drawer.
Researchers working with Chinese technology group Alibaba tried a simple approach to this problem. Instead of just wastefully giving out tableware, the company required food-delivery customers in some cities in China to pick how many sets of tableware they wanted to receive. The default (默认设置) was set at zero. The result, published today in the journal Science, was a 638% increase in the share of no-tableware orders. If applied across China, researchers found, the approach would save nearly 22 billion sets of plastic tableware. The study doesn’t cover carbon emissions, but it’s safe to say that the impact would be significant. It struck me as a useful reminder of the many low-hanging fruits across the economy that can cut waste, and emissions.
Nudging its customers cost Alibaba nothing more than a few hours of software engineering time and the impact it brought was enormous. The concept of nudging comes from the field of behavioral economics known as nudge theory. It suggests that a slight action can encourage good human behavior without the need for policies that limit choice or economic punishment. To nudge customers to eat better, for example, a restaurant might organize its menu by listing healthy options first and bury unhealthy ones at the bottom. More recently, some big companies like Google have also begun to use nudges to advance climate goals.
Nudging theory isn’t without controversy. Some might think it gives consumers responsibility for addressing environmental challenges. But there is another way to look at it. In the absence of necessary policy—and policy is needed — companies can help encourage a widespread change of consumer behavior.
And all of that behavioral change can add up. The International Energy Agency found in2021 that small behavioral changes in energy consumption such as walking instead of driving and adjusting the thermostat (恒温器) could in total reduce 4% of global emissions. The more companies can do to support such changes, the better.
