Pioneers of Electronic Music
Clara Rockmore
Born in Russia on March 9, 1911, Clara Rockmore was accepted to Curtis at age 17 to study with Leopold Auer. She barely began her studies when she bad pain in her right arm that ended her ambition as a violinist.
Fortunately, she was introduced to Lev Termen who just invented one of the earliest electronic instruments in the world: theremin. She adapted to the novel instrument quickly and started performing at such famous venues as the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony.
Bebe Barron
Bebe Barron (June 16, 1925-April 20, 2008) was an American composer of electronic music. In 1949, she founded her own electronic music studio and created the world’s first electronic soundtrack for the 1956 MGM film, Forbidden Planet, by mixing sounds from several different tape machines. The layering technique can be seen today in the multi-tracking practices so fundamental to modern recording studios.
Delia Derbyshire
The British composer and mathematician Delia Derbyshire (5 May 1937-3 July 2001) laid the bedrock for the sound design we hear on TV and radio today when she was working at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Yet she remains pretty unknown except for the electronic music she created in 1963: the original theme to the BBC’s sci-fi hit Doctor Who.
Laurie Spiegel
Born on September 20, 1945, Laurie Spiegel began her musical life as a folk guitar player. But she fell in love with machines after she saw a huge tape-operated computer at Purdue University on a field trip there and has been finding ways to humanize them in her own musical compositions ever since. In 1985, she developed Music Mouse, a groundbreaking computer program that turns the computer itself into a musical instrument.
1. Who invented theremin
A. Lev Termen. B. Clara Rockmore. C. Leopold Auer. D. Delia Derbyshire.
2. When did the layering technique come into existence
A. In 1925. B. In 1949. C. In 1956. D. In 1963.
3. What can we know about Laurie Spiegel
A. She wrote a sci-fi for BBC. B. She was best known for a software.
C. She improved the folk guitar. D. She invented a tape-operated computer.

“I feel like I just came back from Egypt!” reported my friend after her experience at the Horizon of Khufu Exhibition at Phoenix Center in Beijing.
“It’s even better than my in-person visit to the country,” another friend cut in.
After hearing all their crazy talks, I decided that I had to see it for myself. Being no stranger to VR gaming experiences, I believe I can be more objective than my VR-virgin friends who were so impressed by this exhibition. My verdict It’s definitely worth a visit.
This traveling exhibition has already been in London, Montreal, and Atlanta before coming to Beijing. So rest assured that language is not an issue, since visitors can choose from English, Chinese, and French for the whole thing.
The 45-minute VR experience requires visitors to wear a VR headset that is among the most comfortable ones I’ve worn — not slipping or shifting, no matter how hard I moved around.
The tour begins with a tent in Egypt at night, with an enthusiastic guide bringing me on an after-dark VIP tour of the Great Pyramid of Giza. That sounds innocent enough to start and gives me time to get used to moving around the space without walking into the walls, which appeared as red barriers in my headset. Then about the time when I start getting comfortable, things get interesting when the lights go out and the goddess Bast shows up as a huge floating cat… It is really amazing. You should definitely experience it yourself!
The Horizon of Khufu Exhibition is currently running until Aug 25 at Phoenix Center 3 Chaoyang Park Nanlu. Tickets are RMB 238 on weekdays, and RMB 298 on weekends. Children shorter than 1.1 m are not allowed to enter. Visitors can buy their tickets at the door or online on popular ticketing platforms like Dianping by searching “Hufu Skyline-Pyramid Chenjin Shitansuo Tiyanzhan”.
4. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “verdict” in paragraph 3
A. Conclusion. B. Evidence. C. Experience. D. Problem.
5. What did the author think of the VR headset
A. It was unsafe. B. It was satisfying.
C. It was too tight. D. It was expensive.
6. What can be learned about the exhibit
A. A lot of pictures are on display. B. Tickets have to be booked online.
C. Kids below 1.1 m are not allowed in. D. It will come to China on Aug 25.
7. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. An advertisement. B. A product description.
C. A tourist guidebook. D. A post on social media.

Boiling an egg seems like it should be simple. Yet anyone who’s cut into a supposedly “perfectly” boiled egg knows the disappointment: either a rubbery white with a chalky yellow, or a decent yellow surrounded by raw, runny whites. Now, researchers have found a cooking method that delivers a perfect result.
Their solution A new technique called “periodic cooking” that involves moving an egg between boiling and cold water every two minutes for 32 minutes.
What makes cooking an egg so tricky is that the white and yellow parts need different temperatures to reach their ideal texture. Egg whites need about 85℃ to set properly, while egg yellows become creamy and perfect at around 65℃. Traditional cooking methods can’t deliver both temperatures at once.
Some chefs have tried to solve this by cooking eggs at a constant lower temperature (called sous vide cooking), but this leaves the whites undercooked. Others separate the yellow and white to cook them individually, a fussy process that defeats the purpose of cooking an egg in its shell.
The periodic cooking method takes a different approach. By switching between hot and cold water baths, it creates different temperature zones within the egg. The outer white gets hot enough to set properly during the hot cycles, while the inner yellow stays at a constant, lower temperature perfect for that creamy texture everyone wants.
To test their method, the research team compared eggs cooked in four different ways: traditional hard-boiling (12 minutes in boiling water), soft-boiling (6 minutes in boiling water), sous vide(1 hour at 65℃), and their new periodic cooking technique.
The results went beyond just better taste. When the team analyzed the eggs’ nutritional content, they found that periodic cooking actually preserved more of the eggs’ nutrition compared to hard-boiling and soft-boiling methods.
So the next time you want a perfectly boiled egg, consider giving periodic cooking a try. Just remember: Good things come to those who wait... exactly 32 minutes, switching between hot and cold baths.
8. The new technique requires that the egg be switched between hot and cold water _____.
A. 2 times B. 8 times C. 16 times D. 32 times
9. What is the researchers’ main purpose in putting eggs in cold water
A. To protect egg yellows from being overcooked.
B. To keep consumers from burning their fingers.
C. To provide egg whites with high temperature.
D. To make it easier to take the shell from the eggs.
10. What is a problem with the so-called sous vide cooking method
A. It damages the nutrition. B. The egg whites are raw and runny.
C. The egg yellows are chalky. D. It creates different temperature zones.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Problems With Traditional Egg-cooking Methods
B. Patience-A Virtue Even Required for Cooking Eggs
C. A Scientific Analysis of Various Egg-cooking Methods
D. Periodic Cooking-A New Way to Cook Perfect Boiled Eggs
D
“A bird’s experience is far richer, more complex and thoughtful than I’d imagined.” It is a sentence on the first page of David Allen Sibley’s new book What It’s Like to Be a Bird.
Sibley is a top bird expert. When he did research for this book, thought, he became convinced of something he had not previously anticipated: Birds routinely make complex decisions and experience emotions.
He notes that songbirds use reasoning to figure out which seeds offer the best return for their effort. It won’t automatically be the biggest seed around, because if a small seed had high fat content and a lot of energy, it could be the best choice. They may decide to eat later in the day when they spot enemies nearby, thus keeping at flight-ready status in case they are attacked.
Occasionally, Sibley presents birds’ ways that seem to me unpleasant. He describes goose feather as the perfect material sought after for jackets and sleeping bags and reports that globally the most common bird is the chicken, “about 500 million egg-layers and the rest being raised for meat.” Why not devote a line or two to calling out cruelty in these industries Of course, he does not shy away from other scientific reminders, saying that it’s a bad idea to rescue most baby birds, who don’t actually need our help. He also asks readers to resist the desire of adopting baby birds observed on the ground. “They are wild animals and can’t learn life skills from human parents,” he warns.
Sibley’s main aim is to draw attention to the varied North American birds we may encounter in our backyards and nearby parks. He recommends an engaged approach to bird-watching: “You will learn faster if you can be an active observer — draw pictures, take notes, write poetry, or take photos. All of these things make you look a little more carefully and a little longer.”
Reading every page of the book, I am amazed by the beauty of birds it describes so beautifully.
12. When Sibley did research for his new book he was surprised by ________.
A. humans’ reliance on animals for survival
B. the cruelty of food chain among animals
C. birds’ intelligence and complex feelings
D. D. the varieties of birds in our neighborhoods
13. What can we learn about songbirds from paragraph 3
A. They usually prefer the biggest seeds.
B. They consume a lot of energy each day.
C. They are unwilling to delay eating their food.
D. They are good at making balanced decisions.
14. How does the author feel about Sibley’s description about chickens
A. Unsatisfied B. Scientific
C. Romantic D. Funny
15. What might Sibley suggest readers do during bird-watching
A. Feed the birds so they stay longer.
B. Engage in as many ways as they can.
C. Adopt baby birds playing on the ground.
D. Read his book first and watch them closely.

Mrs. Harrington seemed to be a very secretive woman. From the moment I moved into the neighborhood, she had been distant, almost to the point of being rude, to me. She avoided eye contact and brushed off any attempt at conversation. Every day, without fail, she would head to an old tent located about 20 feet from her house at 9 am and again at 9 pm. She always carried two shopping bags and would disappear inside the tent for about 20 minutes before returning to her house.
One afternoon, while out for a walk, I accidentally wandered close to the tent. The moment Mrs. Harrington noticed me approaching, she rushed out, her voice sharp and urgent, “Stay away! Otherwise, I’ll call the police!”
Startled, I began to apologize, trying to explain that I meant no harm. But she cut me off with another outburst, demanding that I leave immediately. Her tone was so firm and unfriendly that I knew arguing would be pointless. I turned and walked home, but her jumpy behavior and the panic in her eyes left me deeply unsettled, Determined to uncover the truth, I decided to investigate.
One night, after ensuring Mrs. Harrington was inside her house with all the lights off, I slipped out of my front door and approached the tent. Reaching the tent, I spotted a small gap in the wooden door, just big enough to look through. I hesitated for a moment but finally pressed my nose against the door and looked inside. It was very dark. But as my eyes adjusted, I nearly passed out at what I saw.
Inside the tent were dozens of dogs and they were nothing more than skin and bones! What was going on here Were they being mistreated by her Without thinking, I began pushing the door, desperate to free them.

Dear Robert,
I am glad to learn that you are planning to join one of the clubs. Having taken into consideration all factors, I’d like to recommend Chinese Culture Club, in which you can learn more about China.
The club organizes a wide range of activities, including calligraphy exhibitions, tea parties and traditional musical instrument performances. Best of all, experts are occasionally invited to hold workshops where you can interact with them and have a lot of hands-on experiences. I am sure such activities will be of great help to your study and enrich your experience in China.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
