high-heeled shoes (高跟鞋) and beautiful postures, Yan Ning may break that boring type. Named “the goddess
scientist”, Yan Ning, who was born in November, 1977 in Jinan, Shandong Province, is a leading biology
researcher at Princeton University in the US. On April 30, 2019, she was included among 100 new members and 25
foreign academicians (院士) into the National Academy of Sciences in the US at the age of 42.
You may not know Yan’s success in biology, but she is a rising star in the science world and her experience is
exciting. After graduating from Tsinghua University and Princeton University, she was invited to set up her own
laboratory at Tsinghua in 2007. At the age of 30, she became one of China’s youngest-ever women professors.
It was a long road to get where she is now. Yan likes to work at night. She says it’s because she can pay
attention to something when the outside is quiet. She also works at least 14 hours a day, but she’s active, because
research is the most “comfortable” job for her.
Besides scientific research, Yan enjoys TV plays and classic novels. Surprisingly, the novel Journey to the
West encouraged her to become a structural (结构的) biologist. In the book, the Monkey King changes into other
animals. She wondered what it would be like to change herself.
On April 22, 2021, Yan was elected (选举) a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. On
Nov. 1 st, 2022, she went back to our motherland, she has made great contributions to life science research. As Yan

Today’s teenagers are social media (媒体) natives. In China, 22.8 percent of Internet users are between the
ages of 10 and 19. Most of them go online to chat. However, teenagers may communicate with different kinds of
people through social media, where their parents are not included.
Most teens care a lot about what information is seen by whom, according to a study from the Pew Research
Center. 58 percent of teens say they post inside jokes or coded (编码的) messages that only the people of the same
age would understand. They say they don’t want to be under the watchful eyes of their parents while using social
media.
To avoid parents’ watchful eyes, teenagers even invented their own coded online languages. Chinese teens
know well using symbols and words that sound alike but stand for something else. For example, “children’s shoes”
means “classmates” because they sound alike in Chinese. The teenagers in the UK do the same thing. They use
“LMIRL” for “Let’s meet in real life”. And “P999” means “parent alert (警报)” because “999” is the phone number
for a sudden serious and dangerous event or situation in the UK.
Parents, meanwhile, are trying to become friends with their kids on social media. But they find they can’t even
understand what their children are saying. To help them, the British government recently launched an online
service called Parent Info, providing translations of teenagers’ coded online languages. This is to help parents learn
more about their children.
“In a period of rebellion (叛逆), teenagers tend to keep themselves less connected with their parents,” said an
expert from a university. “Trying to understand their thoughts and languages may help parents improve
relationships with their kids.”
63. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. All teenagers B. 22.8 percent of Internet users
C. 58 percent of teens D. The teens’ parents
64. What do we know about coded online languages

67. What is the main idea of the passage

In December 2023, history was made by Boeing 787 crossing the Atlantic Ocean using a new kind of fuel (燃
料). This fuel is made from leftover, cooking fats, including fats from animals. This kind of fuel is good for the
environment and is called biofuels (生物燃料).
Airlines are starting to use this greener fuel to depend less on fossil fuels (化石燃料) for many reasons. It cuts
down air pollution and is good for our planet since it breaks down naturally. The US Department of Energy says
that the eco-friendly (环保的) fuel can cut down greenhouse gas emission (排放) by 70%, helping to fight against
global warming. Biofuels are also safer than common fuels if they get into the environment. They have a higher
flashpoint, making them safer to handle, store, and move.
However, △ . A key problem is the large amount of materials required for biofuel production, which
often leads to the “food vs fuel” argument. For example, every year, about 70 billion animals are killed, mostly for
people to eat, but if we wanted to fuel a flight from New York to Paris using only pig fat, we would need about
8,800 pigs. Unluckily, only increasing animal farming to meet this need would require even more resources (资源).
Besides, the production of biofuels can lead to a rise in global food prices, probably causing hunger. In the worst
case, food prices can rise to a point where millions of people may no longer be able to afford basic food, which
may even lead to the death of many people in poor areas.
In fact, biofuels are already in use worldwide and the rapid growth of biofuel production is likely to continue.
However, finding the proper balance and way to grow biofuels to meet different needs at the same time will remain
第 9页/共 16页
a matter of research.
68. How does the writer lead into the topic of the passage
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making a survey. D. By giving an example.
69. What can we learn about biofuels Check and choose the right answer.
①They can increase greenhouse gas emission. ②Common fuels are safer than them.
③They are good for the environment. ④Fats from animals can be made into them.
⑤The global food prices may rise because of them.
A. ①②④ B. ②③⑤ C. ②③④ D. ③④⑤
70. Which of the following can be put in △
A. there are disadvantages we cannot overlook B. biofuels’ popularity is not clear
C. biofuels are not widely used in the world D. it is hard to produce biofuels
71. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards biofuels
A. Uncertain. B. Uninterested. C. Supportive. D. Worried.
72. What would be the best structure of the passage

new day with 1,440 minutes. That’s more than enough to spend.
Ralph Waldo Emerson was right—“This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we know what to do with it.”
____74____ You have only 1,440 minutes today to make a difference in your life: how are you using it
In a fast changing world, the real question that can help you use time well is: how am I spending my next

Warren E. Buffett spends 80% of his day reading. He once said, “The difference between successful people

Being successful doesn’t make you manage your time well. But managing your time well makes you
successful. Making full use of every 1,440 minutes can help you build a better life, which can remind you to think
about time differently every day. It’s a call to spend your most valuable time wisely. “Wasting time means wasting
life,” Robert R. Shannon said. Don’t waste the next 1,440 minutes. ____77____
A. Make full use of your time, and you will succeed.
B You can start an exercise program to improve your health.
C. How are you spending the most important “This time”

Ning, a world-renowned Chinese scientist. She was born in November, 1977 in Jinan, Shandong Province. And she
graduated from Tsinghua University and Princeton University. At her age of 30, she became a professor. Now, she’
s back in China, making great contributions to life science research.
Yan Ning is hardworking. She often works at least 14 hours a day, finding joy in research. Besides, she has
confidence. She thinks women can do well in scientific fields as men .What I admire most is her perseverance and
love for science.
As a middle school student, I will learn from her. When I study English, I’ll set clear goals and keep practicing
every day, just like her commitment to science. Even when I meet difficulties, I’ll stay positive and never give up,
always believing in my ability to improve. Let’s make up our minds to be better learners!
