Reading and writing Chinese characters is often considered the biggest challenge that language learners face. Indeed, the process which has shaped this character system (体系) is both difficult and long.
Maybe they feel unable to understand character systems at first. Actually, Chinese characters are made up of different parts. If you know the structure of Chinese characters, it will soon be easier for you to read and write. Read the following and continue along your journey to learn Chinese characters.
Unlike the English letters, Chinese characters are used to show meaning rather than sound. In fact, most characters were firstly used as visual descriptions of things like trees, houses or humans. Their earliest forms, known as character radicals (偏旁), are the basis for written Chinese. In addition to Chinese pinyin, radicals are important for anyone who wants to read or write well.
When two or more radicals are connected, they work together to create a single character. The radical on the left shows the character’s type or meaning, while the radical on the right might show its pronunciation. Most of the written Chinese language is made up of character compounds (复合词), in which several characters are connected to make one word.
An important rule is that characters are written according to a proper stroke order (笔画顺序), which typically moves from left to right, top to bottom and outside to inside.
Although Chinese characters may seem difficult at first, having a basic understanding of them may help a lot. So, review your radicals, know about the most widely used Chinese characters, and watch as your Chinese skills grow quickly!
36. Why are Chinese characters the biggest challenge for language learners
A. Because China has a very long history.
B. Because people can’t speak Chinese fluently.
C. Because Chinese characters are in different shapes.
D. Because it’s hard to understand the character system.
37. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to

C. The way of making a Chinese character.
D. The difficulties of using Chinese characters.
39. What can we learn from the passage
A. Chinese characters often show sound instead of meaning.
B. Usually Chinese characters are written from inside to outside.
C. Knowing some basic rules of Chinese characters helps learners a lot.

Is rice your favorite staple food (主食) Over 90 percent of the world’s rice is eaten in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. However, eating rice can increase the risk of developing health problems such as diabetes (糖尿病). Now, scientists in the Philippines have created a new variety of rice that may help alleviate the growing burden (重担) of diabetes.
White rice has a high glycemic index (GI, 升糖指数), which can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly. Research has found a connection between eating large amounts of rice, particularly white rice, and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
Currently, around 537 million people around the world have diabetes, with over 60 percent of them living in Asia. This number is expected to reach 783 million by 2045, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
To fight this issue (问题), researchers at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines have teamed up with various global institutions (机构). Based on the IRRI’s large rice gene bank, they examined 380 seed samples over 10 years to identify genes with a lower GI and higher protein content. They then combined (组合) them to develop a new, healthier type of rice.
The new rice has a very low GI and contains twice the amount of protein typically found in regular rice. Rice varieties with higher protein content may contribute to (有助于) slower digestion and absorption rates (消化和吸收速度), meaning they may be able to help control blood sugar levels.
According to the IRRI’s Director General Yvonne Pinto, this new type of rice can help meet important goals for food security (安全). “This could have a big impact (影响) in Asia, as well as in Africa, among the rice-consuming countries (大米消费国),” Nese Sreenivasulu, a scientist at IRRI told The Guardian.
So far, the rice has only been grown in IRRI laboratories. There are plans to start growing in India and the Philippines to help the poor.
41. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in the first paragraph mean
A. Increase. B. Reduce. C. Cause. D. Maintain.
42. According to the passage, which region has the highest percentage of people with diabetes
A. Asia. B. Europe.
C. Africa. D. North America.
43. What was the primary aim of the research conducted at the IRRI
A. To increase the yield of rice crops.
B. To develop a rice variety with a higher glycemic index.
C. To create a healthier rice with lower GI and higher protein.
D. To identify the most common form of diabetes.
44. Based on the information provided, where has the new rice variety been grown so far
A. In various countries across Asia.
B. In Africa and South America.
C. Only in IRRI laboratories.
D. In India, the Philippines, and the United States.

A. Increase. B. Reduce. C. Cause. D. Maintain.

A. Asia. B. Europe.
C. Africa.
