My time in Cuba was far from great. Don’t get me wrong. It is a beautiful country and now, a few years later, with more traveling experiences and understanding, I am ready to go again. But back then, it was awful. My 23 days there was a constant challenge to avoid scams (骗局) — a challenge that a few times saw me succeed but that other times saw me fail sadly. It was discouraging. I felt I could not trust anybody. Where were the lovely Cubans everyone talked about in their blogs
Cuba taught me that people lied, even (or especially) online. Because nobody really wanted to say they had had a bad experience, and nobody was really interested in reading about others’ bad experiences — but was that really the case
I decided there and then to be different. I decided that I had to warn others, tell them the truth, and let them know what they should expect and what they should do to avoid scams. That’s why I opened my blog. It was just an entertainment at the beginning.
Fast-forward 2 years and I realized that I did want to make an effort to make it work out. After all what did I have to lose My contract as a research fellow at the university had expired (到期) and I had no real prospect if not for a series of humble short-term teaching jobs I was less than interested in. So, I gave blogging my heart and soul. And it worked. I’m a much happier person now. I love what I am doing. I wake up in the morning to face a long list of to-do things and I read it with a smile on my face, which is priceless.
Cuba changed my life. And despite all the unhappiness I felt back when I was there, I changed for the best.
4. What does the author probably do
A. A tourist guide. B. A college teacher.
C. A research fellow. D. A travel writer.
5. What was the author’s initial experience in Cuba like
A. She fell victim to scams frequently. B. She had an amazing time there.
C. She found people there dependable. D. She managed to avoid every scam.
6. Why did the author decide to start a blog
A. To earn money by attracting followers. B. To share her happy experiences in Cuba.
C. To warn against scams and share the truth. D. To document her adventures positively.
7. How did Cuba impact the author’s life
A. It left her sorrowful and hopeless. B. It changed her life in a positive way.
C. It provided inspiration for her research. D. It cost her job as a teacher at the university.

Shane Gero, a whale biologist at Carleton University in Canada, has spent 20 years studying how whales communicate. He found that whales from the same family produce specific sounds, and different populations of sperm whales even have their own “dialects”. These sounds, particularly the clicks known as “tail sounds”, are how whales maintain contact with each other on the water’s surface. With the help of AI, researchers can analyze the rhythm and speed of these sounds more quickly, revealing the complex information shared among whales.
Behavioral ecologist Mickey Pardo discovered through AI that wild African elephants have their own “names”. Elephants communicate using low-frequency rumbles (咕哝), and AI models learned the sound features of these “calls” and predicted the recipients. This research not only revealed elephants’ responses to specific calls but also indicated individual information contained within elephant calls, such as gender, age, and physiological status (地位).
AI has also been used to discover the “true names” of other animals, such as tamarins and elephant seals. These studies not only predicted animal names but also attempted to decode (解码) other “vocabularies”, such as location terms. These findings are crucial for understanding the social structures and communication patterns of animals.
Although AI has made progress in decoding animal languages, creating an animal version of “Google Translate” is still far from realization. There is no accepted definition of whether animals can communicate beyond basic levels. That is, whether they possess language structures. Researchers aim not only to converse with wildlife and pets but also to gain a deeper understanding of their thoughts and how they perceive themselves and the world.
Through AI technology, scientists are gaining deeper insights into animal communication patterns, which not only aids in the conservation of endangered species but may also reveal new aspects of animal intelligence and consciousness. As technology advances, we may come closer to understanding animal languages, therefore improving our coexistence with them.
8. Why do sperm whales make “tail sounds”
A. To communicate with family members. B. To warn other animals of danger.
C. To drive away other species of whales. D. To find their way across the ocean.
9. What has Mickey achieved through AI in his research on elephants
A. Learning about their social status. B. Discovering their original habitats.
C. Anticipating the targets of their calls. D. Analyzing the rhythm of their footsteps.
10. Which of the following divides researchers about animal languages
A. The “vocabulary” size of the animals. B. The individual “names” of the animals.
C. The thoughts of animals about the world. D. The existence of animals’ language structures.
11. What may be a suitable title for the text
A. Scientists Use AI to Track Sperm Whales
B. Sound Provides Ways to Talk with Wild Animals
C. Biologist Protects Sperm Whales Through AI
D. AI Helps to Know About Animal Languages
D
You may have read a short story on Twitter, seen a video poem on YouTube, or just followed the path of a hypertext story. It may surprise you, but all those things I just mentioned, and more, are considered literature, digital literature, to be precise.
Digital literature is a vague concept. The definition changes depending on who you ask. Some say it is made up of texts that were created digitally, and that are usually meant to be read on a computer. The Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) has another definition for it: “Work with an important literary aspect that takes advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the stand-alone or networked computer”.
A more updated definition comes from writer Simon Groth. He says that the intention of digital literature is to “showcase innovation and creativity in storytelling for digital media and new directions in contemporary literary practice informed by technology”. It’s still a very vague definition, and just like the others, it provides absolutely no guidelines as to what can be considered digital literature or not. But that’s why I think it works. Because, like the others, it tells you that its main component is the use of technology. But it also leaves breathing room for newer technologies such as smartphones, virtual reality and platforms like Twine, among other things. Technology didn’t exist when the ELO wrote their definition in 2007.
So basically, it’s a new medium for literature. It takes advantage of technology to both write and present a piece of writing. Because it comes in many shapes and sizes, there is a lot of gray area in what can actually be considered digital literature, but think of it as the middle ground between ebooks and video games (none of which are digital literature). Or you can see it as an intersection of digital media and textuality.
So if you write a novel on your computer and print it, it’s not digital literature. But if you write a novel and publish it in a blog or social media, while you interact with your readers, then that’s digital literature.
12. What does the underlined word “vague” in paragraph 2 mean
A Correct. B. Outdated. C. Unclear. D. Scientific.
13. What can we know about the ELO’s definition of digital literature
A It failed to provide the guidelines. B. It didn’t allow for newer technologies.
C. It could easily lead to misunderstandings. D. It took into consideration only literary aspects.
14. Which of the following belongs to digital literature according to the author
A. A video game. B. A printed novel.
C. A blog comment. D. A story on Twine.
15. What’s the main purpose of the text
A. To clarify a concept. B. To introduce a theory.
C. To advocate e-learning. D. To explain a phenomenon.

I’ll never forget the day when I passed my written driver’s exam and got my permit. The instructor had just told me I had passed and was going over the junior driver restrictions when I noticed my dad staring at his phone with a strange expression. Then, without warning, my dad rudely interrupted the instructor and answered the call. I felt so embarrassed, especially with all the signs in the DMV (车管局) saying phones had to be off.
“Hello ” my dad said, his face instantly turning pale. I knew something was terribly wrong, even before he spoke. But I never imagined the call would change my life forever. It was from the North Middleton Fire Department, telling my dad that he needed to get home immediately. As he was about to end the call, I heard my sister on the line, crying and screaming, “Fire!”
At that moment, all I could think about was my lovely 2-year-old niece, Myleeah, whose laughter had added a lot of joy to my dull life but I’d often ignored while playing with my phone. Had my sister gotten her out of the house in time We rushed out of the DMV office in complete shock, and my dad drove like a madman, speeding through red lights and swerving (急转弯) off the road.
The fifteen-minute drive felt endless. As we got closer to home, black smoke filled the sky, and floating ash danced in the air. Reality hit me. Not only was my home burned to the ground, but I feared the worst for my niece. I prayed desperately that everyone was safe. We finally arrived at my neighborhood, swarming (挤满) with fire trucks, police cars, and thick black ash.
The police tried to stop my dad, but he sped past them. I followed as fast as I could, but an officer grabbed my arm, trying to hold me back. “Let go! That’s my house!” I screamed. I broke free and finally caught up with my dad in front of the fire. I spotted my sister sitting in our neighbor’s yard, covered in ash. But when I looked around, I couldn’t see Myleeah. My heart stopped. “Myleeah ” I whispered, terrified. I approached my sister.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With fear in my voice, I asked her where Myleeah was.

To protect our eyesight, I advise taking regular breaks from books and screens, wearing sunglasses to shield from UV rays, and maintaining a balanced diet which is rich in vitamins A and C. Regular eye exams are also essential for early detection of any potential problems.
Thank you!

With fear in my voice, I asked her where Myleeah was. She told me that she was safe, inside our neighbor’s house. The relief that washed over me was indescribable. At that moment, I realized how material things meant to me. I didn’t care about clothes, shoes, or purses — I was just so thankful that my family were safe. My dad came over and sat between my sister and me, wrapping his arms around us. We sat in silence, tears running down our faces.
That day changed my views of life. I learned that life wasn’t about possessions. You would never truly appreciate what you had until it’s threatened. The most important thing in life was having your loved ones near. I had taken my family for granted before, but then, I understood how precious they were. That fire stole our home, but not what mattered most. This experience reshapes my perspective, reminding me that family isn’t just shared blood — it’s about sharing laughter and caring about each other. You can never treasure them too much.
