Time passed. There was plenty of food and no work in the Southland, and White Fang lived fat and happy. Except for Collie, all things went well for him. He learned how to laugh, and how to play at fighting with his master without really biting him. When his master rode his horse, White Fang went with him. He never got tired, because he ran like a wolf.
Once, when they were out riding, his master fell from his horse and broke his leg.
“Home! Go home!” said his master, when he understood his injury(受伤).
White Fang didn’t want to leave him.
“Go home and tell them what happened to me.” White Fang knew the meaning of “home”, though not the rest of the message. But he went.
He ran to Scott’s wife and pulled her dress, but it tore and she was afraid and angry. He stood before Scott’s father growling(嗥叫) until he told White Fang to lie down. He looked at all their faces.
“I think he’s trying to speak,” said Scott’s daughter, Beth.
And at that moment he started to bark — something he had never done before.
“Something’s happened to Scott,” said his wife.
They were all on their feet now, and White Fang ran out of the house. He looked back at them using his eyes to say: “Follow me”.
After this everyone liked him even more.
It was during White Fang’s second winter in the Santa Clara Valley that he made a strange discovery. Collie’s teeth were no longer sharp. Her bites seemed more like playing than hurting. Soon White Fang started playing with her.
(Adapted from White Fang)

If you’ve ever watched a pet dog getting up from its bed and spreading out, with its front paws on the floor and its tail pointing up in the air, you’ll know where the downward-facing dog pose gets its name. You’ll have noticed that many other well-known yoga poses take their names from animals too. But just why is it that so many poses are based on animals, insects, and even birds
To understand where these poses came from you have to think like an ancient yogi. The practice of yoga started many thousands of years ago. There were no cars, computers, high-rise buildings, or playgrounds, so instead people looked to the natural world for inspiration (灵感).
Dawattie Basdeo teaches yoga to children and young people. She explains, “Ancient yogis sat in nature and watched the world around them. They would have been watching the way that animals moved and thinking about copying those shapes. Yoga is about understanding how the world works and your place within it through movement and meditation (冥想).”
Young children are flexible (柔韧的). But as humans grow up, they spend more time sitting at desks or travelling in cars, and their flexibility decreases. Animals don’t have this problem—in fact, they often depend on their bodies and their ability to move to survive.
Dawattie says, “Thinking about animal forms and shapes can make the different yoga poses easy to understand and remember. When you think of the way a dog spreads out, you can easily picture what a downward-facing dog pose might look like. ①A clear picture will come to your mind.”
Yoga is also a spiritual practice, where you think about improving your self-awareness as you move, hold positions, pay attention to your breathing, and meditate.②
Some breathing exercises practised in yoga also take inspiration from nature, such as Bhramari Pranayama—or bee breathing—where the breath sounds like the buzzing of a bumblebee.③
Along with taking inspiration from the living beings around them, the ancient yogis were also inspired by the landscapes of the natural world. ④There are postures that mirror the calmness of a mountain or the strength and balance of a tall tree.
“Humans think of themselves as being at the top of the species ladder,” says Dawattie. “But we can gain so much from the other animals on the planet.”
38. What can we learn about yoga from the passage
A. Yoga was first created for modern stress. B. Yoga suits someone with good flexibility.
C. Yoga makes humans as strong as animals. D. Yoga connects humans to the natural world.
39. The following sentence can be best placed at ________.
When you pose like a powerful lion, you might think about its strengths and characteristics.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
40. Why is “mountain” pose mentioned in the passage
A. To show yoga is about more than animals. B. To teach how to stand like a mountain.
C. To prove yoga is just for nature lovers. D. To explain what to do with the breath.
41. How does the writer share information in the passage
A. By giving facts and examples. B. By listing historical events.
C. By sharing experiences and opinions. D. By comparing different animals.
D
Do you have good friends Do you sometimes feel so close to them that they are like family to you
It turns out that this isn’t just an expression. A study from the University of California and Yale University has found that you and your friends have more genes (基因) in common than strangers do. Researchers looked at the genes of 1,933 people and compared unrelated friends’ genes and unrelated strangers’ genes. They found that friends have about 1% of genes that match.
“1% of genes may not sound like much to the layperson (外行), but to geneticists (遗传学家) it is a large number,” Professor Nicholas Christakis of Yale University said. In fact, this is the same number of genes you share with your fourth cousins, those who have the same great-great-great grandparents as you.
So do you happen to become friends with people who share your genes Not at all. In fact, it is evolution (进化) that brings you together.
“People who share certain genes also share skills and have similar likes and dislikes,” researchers said. In ancient times, it was important that people who were alike stayed together. For example, people who had a similar susceptibility (敏感性) to the cold were more likely to help each other build a fire, giving them a better chance to stay alive.
Researchers also found that among all the genes studied, those producing a change in sense of smell were the most similar in friends. This is probably because people who smell things in the same way are more easily drawn to similar environments. For example, people who like the smell of coffee may hang out at cafes more often and as a result are more likely to meet and become friends with each other.
With these findings, the team has developed an interesting test called the “friendship score”. It can help tell how big the chances are that two people will be friends by studying their genes.
So, here is a question for you: Would you like to take this test and know in advance (提前) who your friends are going to be, or would you still prefer to learn about it by yourself and let time be the judge
42. From the passage, we know that our friends ________.
A. look like our cousins B. share about 1% of genes with us
C. feel close to our family D. can help us when we feel cold
43. According to the passage, the writer probably agrees that ________.
A. we develop our friendship by chance
B. our genes decide who we can make friends with exactly
C. everyone should take the test called the “friendship score”
D. people sharing certain genes have skills and interests in common
44. The writer gives the example of ancient people, in Paragraph 5 to ________.
A. study how ancient people dealt with the cold
B. predict that similar environments lead to friendship
C. prove that it is evolution that brings friends together
D. explain how ancient people gave each other chances to keep alive
45. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Friendship: Is It Possible to Be Influenced by Genes
B. Friendship: Is It Necessary to Be Judged by Time
C. Friendship: Its Influence on Behavior and Genes
D. Friendship: Its Benefits to People and Skills

When you wake up at night with worries going through your head, it can be hard for you to fall back to sleep. Knowing what to do can help you when worries stop you from sleeping.
It can feel like you’re the only person lying awake with thoughts going around your head in the middle of the night, but it’s usual. Worrying at night feels uncomfortable, so it’s important that you’re kind to yourself. Think about what will help you. That could be waking up an adult to tell him or her about your worries.
By paying attention to your body instead of your thoughts, your brain can calm down. One way to do this is to get comfortable in bed, then focusing your attention on your feet. Next, move your attention up to your lower legs, then to your body until you get to the top of your head.
If you get to the top of your head and you still can’t sleep, change positions to make you comfortable again, and then slowly do the same exercise, from head to feet. This exercise takes time and you have to really pay attention, so it can help your brain stop worrying, and then you can fall asleep slowly.
