If art preserves the culture of the Crow people, then Crow women are the keepers of that culture, cultivating it to reflect the modern day.
Fashion designer Bethany Yellowtail grew up riding horses and running in the fields and swimming in the river and being around her people in the Crow Nation and Northern Cheyenne Indian reservations in southeastern Montana. She knows first-hand the importance of art to maintaining native traditions. In 2015 she turned that knowledge into her own brand: B. Yellowtail. A year later, she created the B. Yellowtail Collective, made up of native artists, to foster economic opportunities for their communities. Many of those artists are women from different tribes but all of them preserve their culture and move it forward through their medium of choice.
Yellowtail and her team work for the native-owned business that’s rooted in community. Artists within the Collective typically receive 70% of profit from retail sales, and for a portion of the pandemic (流行病) the brand has upped that to 100%. The extra money has, of course, increased artists’ income in the past year, but the relationship is interdependent: without the work of those artists, B. Yellowtail wouldn’t exist and native culture would feel the loss.
Dewanda Little Coyote is Yellowtail’s mother. Family is deeply important to their tribe. So is art, which often runs in the family — and along the matriarchal (母系的) side. Little Coyote picked up her entrepreneurial spirit from her parents, who owned a gift shop. “My parents said, ‘If you have hands, create something. Do something, and make a living off of that,’” she said. After her parents passed away, the artist began learning beading (串珠) earrings herself. Dentalium, a tusk shell often used in native jewelry, caught her eye in particular. “I love it, because back in the day, our Cheyenne women wore a lot of dentalium,” she said. “So I wanted to give a contemporary look to that — to what our ancestors wore.”
Yellowtail herself learned sewing from her aunts and grandmothers before moving to Los Angeles in 2007 to study fashion design. Now, native women support native women — and matriarchal art evolves.
4. Why did Bethany Yellowtail set up B. Yellowtail
A. To make their culture continue. B. To become rich as soon as possible.
C. To reflect the modern fashions. D. To inspire more women to work.
5. What can we learn from the third paragraph
A. Native-owned businesses make money more easily.
B. The profit from the Collective has fallen sharply.
C. Local artists love to work in their community.
D. Artists, income is related to the development of native culture.
6. Why is Dewanda Little Coyote mentioned in the text
A. To prove she loves her daughter deeply.
B. To show how native culture is handed down.
C. To praise her efforts to help the young.
D. To appeal to more women to join in jewelry design.
7. What kind of person is Bethany Yellowtail
A. Humorous, modest and cooperative. B. Traditional, cautious and outgoing.
C. Independent, competitive and creative. D. Creative, determined and selfless.
C
A machine can now not only beat you at chess, it can also outperform you in debate. Last week, in a public debate in San Francisco, a software program called Project Debater beat its human opponents, including Noa Ovadia, Israel’s former national debating champion.
Brilliant though it is, Project Debater has some weaknesses. It takes sentences from its library of documents and prebuilt arguments and strings them together. This can lead to the kinds of mistakes no human would make. Such wrinkles will no doubt be corrected, yet they also point to a fundamental problem. As Kristian Hammond, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University, put it: “There’s never a stage at which the system knows what it’s talking about.”
Hammond refers to the question of meaning, and meaning is the core that distinguishes the least intelligent humans from the most intelligent machines. A computer works with symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules to transform one string of symbols into another. But it does not specify what those symbols mean. Indeed, to a computer, meaning is irrelevant. Humans also work with symbols in thinking, talking, reading and writing. But for humans, meaning is important. When we communicate, we communicate meaning. What matters is not just how they are arranged outside but what they mean inside.
Meaning doesn’t come through computation, but a process of social interaction that shapes the content of the symbols in our heads. The rules that assign meaning lie not just inside our heads, but also outside, in society, in social memory, social conventions and social relations. It is this that distinguishes humans from machines. And that’s why, however astonishing Project Debater may seem, the tradition that began with Socrates and Confucius will not end with artificial intelligence.
8. Why does the author mention Noa Ovadia in the first paragraph
A. To explain the use of a software program.
B. To show the cleverness of Project Debater.
C. To introduce the designer of Project Debater.
D. To emphasize the fairness of the competition.
9. What does the underlined word “wrinkles” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Arguments. B. Doubts. C. Mistakes. D. Differences.
10. What is Project Debater unable to do according to Hammond
A. Create rules. B. Understand meaning.
C. Talk fluently. D. Identify difficult words.
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Social interaction is key to understanding symbols.
B. The human brain has potential yet to be developed.
C. Ancient philosophers set good examples for debaters.
D. Artificial intelligence ensures humans a bright future.

Through life’s journey, we inevitably encounter unpleasant emotions — anxiety, envy, fear, and frustration — that can cast a dark shadow over our mind. Many of us often shy away from these feelings, from adopting a sense of denial to turning to food or work as a distraction.
We understand that constant joy is an unattainable goal. Yet, we often struggle with emotions that are less than positive. This disgust to negativity is rooted in our natural tendency to avoid or suppress (抑制) such feelings. These negative emotional states can create extra stress in your body and your mind, which is uncomfortable and can also lead to health issues if the stress becomes chronic or overwhelming. This in-built programming, inherited from our ancestors, directs us to avoid discomfort at all costs.
However, suppressing our emotions often leads to unforeseen consequences. As Dr. Elena Touroni, a consultant psychologist of The Chelsea Psychology Clinic, puts it, “When we bury our emotions, they inevitably end up reappearing elsewhere further down the line, causing numerous issues and symptoms, including headaches and anxiety.”
Burying our unfavorable emotions not only influences our well- being but also keeps us from experiencing the benefits that embracing these emotions can bring. Indeed, recognizing and confronting uncomfortable feelings, rather than dismissing or suppressing them, is a sign of emotional health. Negative emotions are there to alert us that something needs to change and to motivate us to make that change. For example, anger and anxiety show that something needs to change and that perhaps our well- being has been threatened; fear is an appeal to increase your level of safety.
Emotions, both positive and negative, play a vital role in our human experience. As Elena says, “Without negative emotions, we would struggle to know our boundaries, how to keep ourselves safe and what hurts us or makes us happy. They can guide us toward making decisions that serve us in the long term.”
12. Why do people often try to avoid negative emotions
A. Humans are biologically programmed.
B. People believe constant joy is achievable.
C. Negative emotions are impossible to control.
D. The benefits of negative emotions are neglected.
13. According to Dr. Elena Touroni, what might happen when we bury our emotions
A. They magically disappear over time.
B. They eventually cause physical problems.
C. They make us stronger and more adaptable.
D. They transform into positive emotions.
14. Why are negative emotions important in our human experience
A. They help us avoid difficulties. B. They drive us to take action.
C. They suppress the need to change. D. They indicate excellent mental health.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A Embracing unpleasant feelings B. Holding back mental challenges
C. The healing power of emotions D. Solutions to emotional barriers

Einstein’s Opinions on Creative Thinking
“The greatest scientists are artists as well,” said Albert Einstein, one of the greatest physicists and an amateur pianist and violinist.
For Einstein, insight did not come from logic or mathematics. ____16____ “All great achievements of science must start from intuitive (直觉的) knowledge. Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
____17____ Surprisingly, it wasn’t the content of an idea, or its subject, that determined whether something was art or science, but how the idea was expressed. If what is seen and experienced is described in the language of logic, then it is science. If it is communicated and recognized intuitively, then it is art. ____18____ That’s why he said that great scientists were also artists.
____19____ “If I were not a physicist,” he once said, “I would probably be a musician. I often think in music and I see my life in terms of music. I get most joy in life out of music.” Music provided Einstein with a connection between time and space, which both combine spatial (空间的) and structural aspects. “The theory of relativity occurred to me by intuition and music is the driving force behind this intuition,” said Einstein. “My parents had me study the violin from the time I was six. ____20____”
A. But how did art differ from science for Einstein
B. Instead, it came from intrusion (直觉) and inspiration.
C. My new discovery is the result of musical insight.
D. There is no doubt that my theory was a great breakthrough then.
E. Einstein himself worked intuitively and expressed himself logically.
F. Einstein also owed his scientific insight and intuition mainly to music.
G. For Einstein, it was the humanities that mainly contributed to his achievements.

One day, Mike and his mom Rose reached his grandma Alondra’s house for lunch. During it, they talked about the school’s approaching prom (舞会). Alondra said, “When I was young, I failed to attend the school’s prom for some reason!”
Rose could see that Alondra had dreamed about attending a prom. After returning home, Rose encouraged Mike to ask his grandma to be his dance partner. She wanted to help Alondra to realize her dream. She knew Alondra was outgoing and loved to stay with young kids.
Mike initially hesitated but finally decided to follow his mother’s suggestion. His good friend Lily supported his decision, too. The next day, Mike sent the invitation to his grandma. Seeing it, Alondra was surprised and excited. When that big night came, Alondra wore a beautiful dress.
When they joyfully walked into the hall of the prom, unexpectedly, there was a loud gasp (倒抽气). Mike could feel all eyes on him.
“Wait! Did he bring his old grandmother as his dance partner ” some kids behind them laughed. Mike looked around, finding that every boy had a young girl as their partner. Upset and embarrassed, he whispered, “I’m sorry, Gran. Don’t hate me for this.” Without a second thought, he left his grandmother behind and walked out of the hall, vowing not to return to the prom. Poor Alondra was left alone in the hall. She had never imagined she’d be alone in a hall full of young children. But it happened. Mike sat on the basketball court stairs, thinking about how terrible it was to bring Alondra along. Suddenly, a familiar voice from behind distracted his racing thoughts.
“Your grandmother needs you,” it said. “It was very rude of you to leave her alone!” Lily approached him, encouraging him to be back with his grandma.

A Symbol of China
Of all the symbols representing China, the Great Wall, a miracle created by the ancient Chinese, tops my recommendation list.
Originally built in the Qin Dynasty and expanded and strengthened in the Ming Dynasty, it became the world’s largest military structure. And its historic and strategic importance is matched only by its architectural significance, which makes it a symbol of the unity, strength and wisdom of the Chinese people.
The Great Wall now is China’s biggest tourist attraction. As the saying goes, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man”. So come and experience it first-hand.
47. Lily sat down on the stairs next to him. “I thought what you did was very cool, Mike. I mean, bringing your grandma as a partner. That was very cool,” she said. Mike raised his head, asking, “Really ” Lily nodded and explained, “Such a brilliant deed is it to help fulfill your grandma’s long-cherished dream.” Plucking up his courage, Mike immediately jumped to his feet and rushed back towards the hall. When he returned with Lily, he instantly spotted Grandma in the crowd, who cast a broad smile at him. Ashamed but determined, Mike walked up firmly towards Alondra.
Holding her hands, Mike cried, “Gran, sorry! Thanks for being my dance partner.” “All right,” Alondra grinned at him. “I’m so glad you’re back.” Then, the two moved slowly to music together with other dancers, immersing themselves in the beautiful melody. The other kids watched their elegant movement with great admiration. That night, both of them enjoyed the sweet night, their heart overflowing with great joy. After the prom came to an end, Alondra whispered to Mike on their way back, “It is one of the best days of my life.” A surge of pride welling up in Mike’s heart, he was delighted he made the right decision.
