Signs of Spring
Snowdrop spotting!
Snowdrops are one of the very first signs of spring. These delicate flowers emerge (出现) in the depths of winter, as early as the 1st of January. By February, snowdrops flower in woodlands, parks, and gardens all over the UK. However, the climate change causes them to appear earlier and earlier every year — so keep an eye out from Christmas onwards!
Blossom blooming!
The white flowers of blackthorn are one of the first blossoms every year. Pink blossoms like cherry and apple follow shortly after, and pinkish-white hawthorn blossoms in May. Blossom trees are an important habitat and food source for lots of other animals.
Bluebell woodlands!
Believe it or not, over half the world’s population of bluebells lives in the UK, and in spring, they’re out in full force! These strongly-scented blooms form carpets across shady woodland floors from mid-April onwards. Bluebell flowers are very delicate, so it’s important not to touch them and to be careful not to trample on them.
Birds, birds, birds!
As a true sign of spring, birds’ nests can be tricky to see, as many birds carefully hide their nests from natural enemies. Instead, listen out for the tuneful birdsong that begins in March, as birds start to seek out their mating partners. If you’re lucky enough to spot a bird’s nest, make sure you don’t get too close or touch it, just observe from a distance.
21 Which spring sign appears first according to the text
A. Delicate snowdrops. B. Pinkish-white hawthorns.
C. Bluebell carpets. D. Tuneful birdsongs.
22. What do the last two signs have in common
A. They are easily seen in early Spring. B. They both call for careful treatment.
C. They are a common phenomenon in April. D. They have unique ways to survive in nature.
23. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A book review. B. A news report. C. A travel journal. D. A nature magazine.

Bears across Europe are competing, not for food or mates, but for who can sleep the longest. Inspired by March Madness, March Napness is an annual competition where hibernating (冬眠) bears “compete” to see who will remain in hibernation the longest. It is run by Four Paws, a global animal welfare organization.
“The sleepiest bear wins,” said Claire LaFrance, head of communications for Four Paws. “The bear that remains sleeping the longest is crowned king or queen for that year.”
According to LaFrance, Four Paws has over 135 rescued brown bears in seven shelters around the globe. Six of them are in Europe, where the competition is held. The competitors are European brown bears. Most of them have been rescued from improper or inadequate keeping conditions and can’t be returned to the wild.
This year, 23 bears started the competition. LaFrance said the bears at Four Paws shelters typically start hibernating between October and November. “Some bears prefer to make their own dens (兽窝), and some bears prefer that we provide them with the dens so they do none of the work.” said LaFrance.
The bears can sleep deep into April. So far, more than half of the bears have woken up. In order for them to be disqualified, they need to be awake for five straight days. Bears don’t wake up consistently at the same time every year, so the results of this competition aren’t easy to predict. LaFrance said the biggest surprise this year came in week one from one of last year’s finalists. At their bear shelter in Ukraine, a bear named Tyson woke up in the early stages of the competition.
Four Paws hopes March Napness inspires people to learn about bears and ways to protect them. Beyond that, Four Paws hopes people following the tournament learn a thing or two from the sleepy competitors. “I think they can really help bring back the movement that sleep is self-care and there’s no harm in taking a little nap when you need it,” LaFrance said.
24. What can be learned about March Napness
A. It takes place throughout the world. B. It is a yearly competition for bears.
C It is organized by a European company. D. It concerns bears of different kinds.
25. Which of the following is TRUE
A. Four Paws has seven shelters in Europe. B. The contest helps release bears to the wild.
C. The winner of the contest is unpredictable. D. The bears prepare their own places to rest in.
26. Why does Four Paws organize March Napness
A. To select bears suitable for returning to the wild.
B. To study the hibernation patterns of brown bears.
C. To stress the value of bear preservation and sleep.
D. To compete with other animal welfare organizations.
27. Which is the best title of this text
A. Bears Sleep to Win B. Bears Sleep to Survive
C. The Benefits of Wildlife Sleep D. The Research of Bear Hibernation
C
Most people recognize the music John Williams wrote for the film Jaws. As soon as you hear it, you begin thinking that a shark will attack. And that is exactly what you are meant to think. The music tells you to be frightened about what you are seeing. Good film scores (配乐) always signal how to feel about what is happening on the screen. This is even clearer with Williams’ next score, for Star Wars. When Luke Skywalker appears on the screen, the music becomes heroic because he is the hero. Darth Vader is the bad guy, so his music is quite dark.
No one can talk about film scores without talking about Hans Zimmer. He did the music for many films, such as The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Lion King. Zimmer and Williams have very different styles and ideas for film scores. There are people who do not like Williams’ scores for the Harry Potter films because they stand out too much, while some people do not like Zimmer’s scores because they are sometimes too subtle (不易察觉的).
A third, very different kind of film composer is Tan Dun, who has a classical music background, unlike many film composers. Tan started out as a musician for the Peking Opera. However, he fell in love with Western classical music, and started writing classical Western operas that show a strong touch of Chinese music. Like his operas, the scores for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Hero use Chinese musical instruments and styles in a Western classical music score. The music follows all of the rules of most film scores — the purpose is to tell you how to feel about the action in the film, and to help tell the story. However, perhaps because of Tan’s background in classical music, his scores can be viewed as works of art on their own without needing a film to support them.
Film scores are almost always a form of classical music. However, unlike most classical music, they have never been considered high art. Perhaps with Tan Dun, this will begin to change.
28. What is the main purpose of John Williams’ music in Jaws
A. To reduce audience’s nervousness. B. To replace actors’ dialogue.
C. To strengthen shark visuals. D. To guide audience’s emotions.
29. How do Zimmer and Williams differ in musical styles
A. Williams’ are not noticeable. B. Zimmer’s do not stand out enough.
C. Zimmer focuses on heroic themes. D. Williams uses Chinese instruments.
30. Why are Tan Dun’s scores different from others’
A. They can stand alone as works of art. B. They are mainly electronic music.
C. They overstress Peking Opera styles. D. They abandon Western music rules.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Classical music may perfect film scores. B. Tan Dun’s scores may be a game changer.
C. Traditional music may replace film scores. D. Film scores are always seen as low art.
D
According to an old wives’ tale, you should be careful about allowing your face to remain in an ugly expression, in case the winds change direction and your appearance sets in place, leaving you stuck looking and feeling bad forever. The old wives, whoever they were, may have been right. It seems that the attitudes we hold and how we carry ourselves—the features we present to others—have a great deal to do with who we become on the inside.
Olga Khazan, a writer at the Atlantic magazine, believes that what we consider as our personality is not fixed or inborn. In her book “Me, but Better”, Ms. Khazan keeps track of her efforts to improve her personality by working on five key traits (特征): openness, responsibility, friendliness, kindness, and emotional management.
Ms. Khazan aims to change herself from an unfriendly and shy person into a happier, more outgoing, and kinder one. She forces herself to try new things like improvisational comedy (即兴喜剧). She starts hosting social gatherings. She tries meditation (冥想). She helps the homeless.
Let’s say we can tweak our big-five personality traits so that we strengthen our positive parts and reduce our weaknesses. How would we know Ms. Khazan solves this by regularly testing her personality on a special website. First, she takes an online quiz to see where she starts. Then, whenever she makes a big change in a trait, she retakes the test to see how her main qualities improve and her weaker ones disappear.
It should be admitted that Ms. Khazan’s narrative is pretty thin on the praised “science”. But it’s an enjoyable read—and encouraging too. “I first imagined changing my personality like fine-tuning (微调) a car,” Ms. Khazan writes, comparing herself to a vehicle. “I would fix small parts and add what’s missing, and in the end, I’d become the best version of myself.”
32. What can we learn about the tale from the first paragraph
A. Wind direction directly affects appearance.
B. Personality is shaped largely by our attitudes.
C. Ugly expressions usually make a person sad.
D. Wind changes can reshape facial features forever.
33. What is Olga Khazan’s purpose by changing her personality traits
A. To remove all signs of her weak traits.
B. To become more successful in her job.
C. To become a more friendly and social person.
D. To prove that personality traits are entirely fixed.
34. What does the underlined word “tweak” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. strengthen B. remove C. ignore D. change
35. What is the author’s attitude towards this book
A. Unclear B. Doubtful C. Favorable D. Critical

Discover the Ancient Art of Stargazing
Winter is a great time to go stargazing (观星). The cold air is often clearer than in summer. It also gets darker earlier, so there’s no need to stay up too late to gaze at the stars. This month there are dark skies festivals taking place around the UK, including in Yorkshire and the South Downs in England. ____36____
What is a star
Stars look like small shiny dots in the sky, but they’re really just huge, very hot balls of gas. The closest star to Earth is the Sun. Most stars that you can see without a telescope (望远镜) are within 1,000 light years of our planet. ____37____ Our own Milky Way galaxy, which is around 100,000 light years across, contains around 100 billion stars.
The history of stargazing
People have been looking at the stars for thousands of years. Before calendars and clocks were invented, people relied on the Sun and the stars to show the changing of the seasons. Although stars appear to stay in the same place in relation to each other, the night sky changes throughout the year. ____38____ They group stars into patterns, known as constellations (星座). These vary across different cultures, and are often linked to legends.
How are stars studied
Scientists use telescopes to learn about stars. They were invented in the 1600s and the Italian astronomer Galileo was the first person to point one at the sky in 1609. ____39____ These collect light from far-away objects and enlarge them, so they look much closer. The most powerful telescope today is the James Webb Space Telescope, which is out in space circling the Sun about one million miles from Earth.
How to stargaze
____40____ Put on warm clothes and choose a spot that has as little light pollution as possible. Light pollution is too much human-made light, such as from windows and street lights. Darker areas might include the end of your garden or a nearby park or field. Give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness, which takes 20 to 30 minutes, and you’ll be able to see more.
A. Astronomers are people who study the night sky.
B. It sends images back to Earth using radio waves.
C. Later telescopes used mirrors instead of former glasses.
D. Choose a clear night for stargazing, with few or no clouds.
E. A light year is the distance light travels in one Earth year.
F. In winter certain stars are visible that can’t be seen in summer.
G. At these, stargazing beginners can learn more about the night sky.

The Science Fair Dream
That spring, my fifth-grade self-became determined to win the school Science Fair’s gold medal. Every year, the gym turned into a magical space: third graders’ “talking” plants in pots, sixth graders’ robot fish feeders, and eighth graders’ erupting volcano models that always amazed everyone. This time, I couldn’t stop staring at the shiny medal, as if it belonged to me already.
With two weeks left, I felt nervous. My notebook was still empty. “What if you build a rocket ” Mom suggested at breakfast, waving her spoon. The idea lit up my mind — a smooth silver rocket with bright blue flames shooting upward. Nothing could be cooler!
We rushed to the store that afternoon. Cardboard turned into rocket parts and glitter (小发光物) became my space magic. At the kitchen table, I worked like a scientist: pizza box wings, tin foil (锡纸) tips shining like ice. When Dad asked how it would fly, I shook my jar of glitter: “This is the special fuel!”
On the morning of the fair, my glittering rocket stood by the door. In the gym, Mary’s plants grew in real dirt, and Tom’s robot arm picked up candies. I placed my rocket under the sunlight, rainbow colors dancing on its surface. As the judges walked closer, I stood tall, waiting for their amazed faces.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One of the judges asked softly, “Can you explain how your rocket works ”

【67题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
One of the judges asked softly, “Can you explain how your rocket works ” My throat tightened. The glitter fuel jar felt suddenly heavy in my palm. “Well…the glitter creates driving force when it sparkles,” I stammered, watching the judge’s smile fade into polite confusion. Beside me, Tom demonstrated his robotic arm’s precise candy-sorting calculation using real coding terms. My cardboard wings bent under the gym’s colorful lights as I finally understood — while I’d been crafting decorations, others had been studying actual science.
When the awards were announced, my name wasn’t called. Mary got third place for her plant experiment. Tom won second with his robot arm.
