Noland Arbaug was paralyzed below the shoulders after a diving accident, losing physical movement in his limbs. Later that afternoon, I overheard a woman exclaiming, “Jellybean! What a name!” Entirely taken by surprise, I turned around and found she stopped to look more closely at the kitten. The woman tapped the bars, her face softening when the kitten pranced forward, her jet-black fur gleaming under the lights. “Come here, little candy,” she cooed, extending her fingers. Jellybean pressed her nose against the cage door, golden eyes blinking trustingly. I held my breath as the woman stood up decisively. “I’ll take her,” she said, adding with a chuckle, “I have been begging for a cat that sounds like dessert.” My vision blurred unexpectedly as I watched Jellybean being lifted from the cage, her tiny paws kneading the air in innocent triumph.
Two weeks later, I visited the woman’s house as a routine after adoption. The woman welcomed me in with a string of thanks. “I know you were the one who named her, and I’ve been wanting to thank you.” But deep down I knew it was I who should say thank you, for this gracious woman offered a cozy home to the cat. Then, in the kitchen I saw Jellybean sitting in sunny windows, sniffing at ladybugs walking across. The woman added, “She’s the sweetest thing — I just love her to pieces. But I don’t know if I would have noticed her if she hadn’t had that great name. It just suits her perfectly. She’s so bouncy and colorful...” I was grateful that the name allowed some humans to see beyond a dark mid-night coat into the rainbow of riches in a cat’s heart.
