Since the mid-20th century, the area of snow, grasslands and lakes in Sanjiangyuan has become smaller

protect the environment in Sanjiangyuan over the years. They still live on selling caterpillar fungus (冬虫夏草)
they’ve found in grasslands. In the past, they carried food with them in plastic bags and left the bags and food waste
behind. But now the local people have realized they should live together with nature in harmony. They often pick
up waste on the grasslands. People also take their plastic bags and food waste down the mountain after eating. The

Wheat Straw Painting (麦秆画) first appeared in the Sui and Tang dynasties. Today, some people are still
interested in it, and Zhang Li is one of them. She became interested in Wheat Straw Painting when she was 16
years old. In 2015, she set up her own workroom. Now, Zhang Li realizes that Wheat Straw Painting is what she
wants to do for the rest of her life.
She collects lots of wheat straw in the countryside. She dries the straw in the sun and then cuts it by hand.
Colorful straws, like red, orange and brown can be found in her artworks. “They are all natural.” Zhang Li said.
Different colors make her paintings beautiful.
In order to develop Wheat Straw Painting, she came up with the idea of mixing it with other traditional
Chinese art. So she spent two years learning Suzhou embroidery (苏绣) from some famous artists.
One of her greatest works is a bird among flowers. It took her the whole year to finish it. The bird’s
smooth-shiny and colorful feathers are made of wheat straw, while the flowers are made of silk. “In my works, you
will find paintings and embroideries mix well.” said Zhang Li.
Through great effort, Zhang Li successfully brought Wheat Straw Painting to people’s attention. She said,
“What I have done is just the very beginning. There is still a long way to go.”

Dear Mary,
I am glad to hear that you are coming to China soon. Knowing that you feel it difficult to
learn Chinese, I’d like to share some ideas with you.
First of all, as for listening, seeing Chinese films and listening to Chinese songs can help a
lot. They can make you interested in Chinese and you can develop your listening ability by this
way. What’s more, finding more chances to speak Chinese is very important. You can make more
Chinese friends and communicate with them. The more you speak, the more fluent you’ll be.
Besides, you can also try reading some simple Chinese stories. Then day by day, you can learn
many new Chinese words, make some Chinese sentences and even a simple story.
All in all, you should practice as often as you can. “Practice makes perfect.” As long as you
make efforts to learn Chinese and keep trying, I believe you can learn it well.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Zhang Xin
