It was the most exciting week at our school—the book fair (书展) was coming! We couldn’t
wait to go to the library on Friday. The library was a 1 place. There are lots of books that
could take us to a wonderful world.
In my eyes, the librarian (图书管理员) was the best 2 in the school. I wanted to know if
they sat in a soft chair and read books all day when nobody was around.
One day, my geography teacher, Mr Acree, asked me if I could 3 in the library during
the book fair. They needed someone to tidy up books and 4 shelves. I could hardly believe it!
I said “yes” right away. Although I wouldn’t get paid, I was really happy because I could 5
any book I wanted from the book fair for free. This made me very 6 because my family didn’t
have enough money to buy many books.
When Friday came, I went to the 7 early to start volunteering. I cleaned the shelves and
organized the books.
The fair was quite a success for all the people! When it was over, I 8 all the books that
were left. After doing all the work, I 9 went through the shelves and picked my favorite book.
I took the book to Mr Acree to thank him. He smiled and said he liked students who loved books
and wished me to 10 reading. It was a great day, and I couldn’t wait to start my reading
journey.

The race against time began when the Flying Cloud set out on its journey. It aimed to be the

journey. There was a lack of 7 due to violent storms. Ellen couldn’t see the sun and had to

I was cute, active and happy until that day when I was 15 months old. I had a bad fall. I fell on a
glass rabbit and it cut my eye badly enough to blind it. The doctor said that if the eye was 1 ,
my face would become out of shape, so my scarred (有疤痕的), blind and grey eye lived on with
me.
People often asked uncomfortable questions about my eye or 2 played jokes on me.
When the kids played games, I was always the " 3 guy." I knew that everyone looked down
on me.
Yet every time Mom noticed I was unhappy, she would say to me: "Hold your head up high and
face the world." It helped me move on in life. As a 4 , I thought Mom meant: "Be careful or

Let them see the 7 inside you." That is how Mom taught me pride.
Mom's love and encouragement gave me the confidence to remove my own doubt. 8 , I
was able to look people in the eye. I learned not only to appreciate(欣赏)myself but to have deep love
for others. "Hold your head up high" has been 9 many times in my home. Each of my
children has felt its 10 . The gift she gave me lives on in my children.
