When it comes to delicious food, nothing beats our grandma’s cooking! Well, maybe except more grandmas’ cooking in the same kitchen. It is what goes on at Enoteca Maria, an Italian restaurant in New York City. The restaurant hires (雇用) grandmas from all over the world, instead of actual cooks.
The owner of Enoteca Maria, Jody Scaravella, came up with the idea of placing grandmothers in a restaurant kitchen. After losing his mother, grandmother and sister, Jody missed sitting down with family for home-cooked meals. He wanted to create a place to go out for a home-cooked meal and Enoteca Maria was born in 2007.
The first grandma cooks of the restaurant came from different parts of Italy. They would take turns to cook their own special dishes. Sometimes, they would have friendly competitions of whose dish was best.
Over time, Jody decided to invite grandmas all over the world. Today, the restaurant has grandmas from around 30 countries, like Brazil, China and Japan. They take turns to work in the kitchen.

In February 1950, mathematician Hua Luogeng wrote an open letter to all Chinese students studying in the US while he was returning to China. The letter moved many people and showed the strong patriotism (爱国精神) of many Chinese scientists abroad who couldn’t wait to return to their homeland. This historical moment became one of the turning points for China’s scientific development.
The documentary Return tells the story of many scientists who decided to go back to China in the 1950s. “It not only focuses on their historical backgrounds but also shows their feelings and a deep sense of patriotism,” said Li Zheng, the documentary’s director.
▲ For example, in Hua’s case, many people don’t know how important his work was in the early development of computer science in China. In March, 1950, Hua left his job at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and returned to China. At a time when few people knew about computers, Hua already understood their potential (潜力) for scientific progress. He believed computers could solve complex problems faster than humans. The next year, he became the director of the Institute of Mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ and set up China’s first computer research team. Li said Hua’s story moved him. “Hua was more than just a mathematician. He had big ideas and was very brave, especially for his time.”
As for the influence of Return on young people, many students who watched the documentary wrote reviews about how scientists’ stories changed their views on learning. Li said, “Today’s young people live in a well-off society, but we must never forget the contributions (贡献) of those who came before us.
