Comfortable to wear no matter if the weather is hot or cold, silk is as popular today as it was over 5,000 years ago when it was first made. However, the history of silk has not always been as smooth as the fabric(织物) itself.
The fabric comes from silkworms (蚕) which, although tiny when born, grow fast in size. On a strict diet of leaves, silkworms increase in weight by 10,000% over the first week of their life. When they are fully grown, they create a cocoon(茧) made of silk. And then they prepare for their next step of the development.
Although today's silk is both produced and used worldwide, the primary production of silk was in China. Actually, silk was so valuable that at one time only the emperor and his close family were allowed to wear it. The Chinese were very protective of the silk-producing process. But it was said that a queen in the fifth century hid some silkworm eggs in her hair and took them to her Asian kingdom and in the sixth century, two monks(僧侣) managed to take some silkworm eggs all the way back to Byzantium. This was an event of great importance since Europe was from that point able to produce its own silk.
Before the monks' success in bringing the silkworm eggs out of China, Europeans were dependent on businessmen bringing the fabric from East Asia across the mountain roads of Central Asia and the Middle East. So much silk was transported that this trade route became known as the Silk Road.
China is still the world's main producer of silk. Although man-made fabrics are cheaper and easier to produce, the beauty of silk is difficult to match, so it has a large international market.
