On the first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know.I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady with a smile. She said,"Hi,handsome! My name is Rose.I'm eighty-seven years old.Can I give you a hug?"
I laughed and warmly responded,"Of course you may!"She gave me a giant squeeze(拥抱)."Why are you in college at such a young, innocent(幼稚的) age?"I asked.
She jokingly replied,"I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."
"No,seriously?"I asked.I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
"I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!"she told me.
After class we walked to the Student Union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends.Every day of the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop.I was always attracted listening to this"time machine"as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year,Rose became a campus icon(校园偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention from other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the term,we invited Rose to speak at a student gathering.I'll never forget what she taught us. "We do not stop playing because we are old;we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. There are so many people walking around who are dead, and they don't even know it."she said.
"There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability,"she added. "But growing up requires finding opportunities in change.Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did,but rather for things we did not do."
She concluded her speech by courageously singing The Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics(歌词) and live them out in our daily life.

Scientists have developed a way to read minds, translating unspoken thoughts into written words. It's the first time it's been done without having to put anything into the brain. They used artificial intelligence(AI)(人工智能).It is the name given to a computer system that is able to "think"for itself and carry out tasks that usually require human intelligence.
Scientists used a special scanner(扫描器).The machine can see where blood runs, which shows the parts of the brain that are most active.People taking part in the experiment listened to the radio for 16 hours as their brains were scanned. The AI tool learned to connect certain brain activity with words they heard. After that, each person was asked to think of a story, and the AI tool managed to pick up these thoughts as they happened.
The results had about a 50% accuracy rate(准确率),although the AI found it hard to work out the meaning of pronouns, such as he or she,her or him.For example,it turned"I don't have my driver's license yet" into"She has not even started to learn to drive yet".It could usually understand the meaning of what someone was thinking rather than the exact words. The AI was personalized,so when it had learnt from one person but it was tested on another,it couldn't understand their thoughts.
The scientists, who have been working on the technology for 15 years, say they understand the risks of it being used badly.Scientist Jerry Tang told a newspaper,"We want to make sure people only use these types of technologies when they want to,and that it helps them."The scientists hope it will help people with certain medical conditions, who are still awake but have lost the ability to speak,to communicate once again.

Cyclocross is cross-country bicycle racing.Racers spend only part of a race on their bikes because only part of the two-mile race is smooth.Other parts of the race have the challenge of obstacles(障碍).When racers reach them, they can ride over them,or pick up their bikes and run.
To be a top racer, you must dismount without slowing down at all.To do this, swing your right leg over the bike seat.At the same time, move the bike away from your body. This makes room for your right foot to hit the ground next to your left foot.As your right foot nears the ground, take your left foot away from the bike.Put both feet on the ground and start running!
As soon as you are running, you have to decide what to do with your bike. You may shoulder it or lift it.It's important to practice both skills.Sometimes you need to run fast and jump over some obstacles .As your feet hit the ground, you reach down and catch the bottom of your bike.Lift up carefully and keep the bike on your right shoulder while you run. Some times you may lift your bike. You catch the top of your bike. Then you lift the bike high enough to get over the obstacles and carefully put the bike on the ground.
After you have carried your bike across an obstacle, you will need to remount .As soon as your bike is on the ground, push off with your left leg, swing your right leg over the bike seat, and move into riding position.Remounting can be the hardest skill of cyclocross. You can learn by watching someone who remounts well.
Cyclocross is a great way to stay active and have fun. However,it can be dangerous.Make sure that you are well prepared. Then, you will just need to go!
