Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg,an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem,Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says.According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does,Dr.Norberg says.According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips,so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.It takes some practice.

31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking
A.Skeptical. B.Objective.
C.Tolerant. D.Conservative.

When it comes to lowering blood pressure, studies have typically shown that aerobic (有氧的) exercises are best.Recent research suggests another type of physical activity is worth including as an effective tool to prevent and treat high blood pressure.
Exercises that engage muscles without movement, such as wall squats and planks, may be best for lowering blood pressure, according to a large study published in July 2023 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
This type of training is known as isometric exercises, according to the Mayo Clinic.Isometric muscle action happens when muscles contract but do not visibly change length, and the joints involved don’t move, facilitating stability of the body.Isometric exercises can be done with weights or without, just relying on the body’s own weight.
“These findings provide a comprehensive data-driven framework to support the development of new exercise guideline recommendations for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure,” said study coauthor Dr.Jamie O’Driscoll in a news release.
The researchers looked into randomized controlled trials that had reported the effects of exercise interventions, lasting two or more weeks,on blood pressure between 1990 and February 2023.From a review of 270 trials with 15,827 participants, the researchers found that among HIIT(high intensity interval training),isometric exercises, aerobic exercises, dynamic resistance training and a combination of the latter two, isometric exercises led to the greatest reductions in blood pressure.
It’s also important to note that there are other lifestyle changes as well as exercise that can benefit your blood pressure. These include keeping to a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, cutting down on salt, not drinking too much alcohol and ensuring that you continue to take any prescribed medication.
More research is needed to determine exactly why isometric exercises might be better for lowering blood pressure than other types of training, the authors said.

Rushing down the path, the traceur (跑酷者) is on the lookout for his next obstacles such as fire escapes, walls or fences. As soon as he realizes a massive brick wall stands between him and where he wants to be,he unintentionally grabs on the wall with his hands and lifts himself to stand on top of it.His next move is a jump that lands him back on solid ground. However, noticing that he is unstable,he rolls to avoid injuries.
Traceurs are athletes who perform remarkable gymnastics actions in urban environments.Serious traceurs are fascinated not just by the physical challenges of Parkour, but by its philosophy. Those who learn to excel at Parkour claim to develop not just physical fitness, but increased self-confidence and critical thinking skills,as they train themselves to find ways around every obstacle in their paths.
Because of these philosophical foundations,Parkour is often described by traceurs as more of a lifestyle or an art form than a sport.Passionate traceurs are determined to keep Parkour from becoming a competitive petition, they argue, devalues the philosophical theory behind Parkour.People who practice Parkour should be more concerned with their relationship to the environment than with a ticking clock,a score or a cheering crowd.Furthermore, traceurs should work with each other to improve confidence, awareness and unity.Competition, they argue, only brings about feelings of conflict and disharmony.
While Parkour purists suggest that the philosophy behind Parkour helps to limit injuries, they must remember that not everyone who tries to leap over a mailbox is an experienced traceur trying to get in touch with his or her environment.Adolescents attempting to carry out these acrobatic (杂技的) skills could severely injure themselves. So while newcomers to Parkour might be eager to investigate this art of movement,it would be wise for them to remember the physicality behind the philosophy. After all, philosophy is not much good to a broken leg.

B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.
根据该段第三句“But the sport‘s rules require…in contact with the ground at all times.”

29.What advantage does race walking have over running
A.It’s more popular at the Olympics.
B.It’s less challenging physically.
C.It’s more effective in body building.
D.It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
根据最后一段第一句“As a result...runner’s knee,are uncommon among race walkers.”

30.What is Dr.Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking
A.Getting experts’ opinions. B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach. D.Doing regular exercises.
根据最后一段第三句“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.” consult a coach意为“咨询教练”,与A项“获取专家的意见”为同义表达,故选A项。

This type of training is known as isometric_exercises,according to the Mayo Clinic.Isometric muscle action happens when muscles contract but do not visibly change length, and the joints involved don’t move, facilitating stability of the body.Isometric exercises can be done with weights or without, just relying on the body’s own weight.

1.What does the underlined part “isometric exercises” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Exercises that are done with extra weights.
B.Exercises that involve visible muscle contraction.
C.Exercises that focus on stability of the body.
D.Exercises that engage muscles without movement.

2.How did the researchers carry out the study
A.By providing statistics. B.By interviewing experts.
C.By doing experiments. D.By making comparisons.

3.What do the authors suggest the future studies about isometric exercises focus on
A.Exploring the reasons for its effectiveness.
B.Demonstrating its influence on mental health.
C.Assessing its suitability for different populations.
D.Determining its long-term impact on blood pressure.

4.What is the text mainly about
A.The benefits of aerobic exercises.
B.The best exercise for blood pressure.
C.The effects of various types of exercises.
D.The importance of keeping a healthy lifestyle.

5.Why does the author describe a traceur at the beginning
A.To illustrate what Parkour is like.
B.To teach ways of avoiding injuries.
C.To explain different Parkour moves.
D.To highlight the popularity of sports.

6.How can Parkour enhance a traceur’s self-confidence
A.By strengthening physical fitness.
B.By winning Parkour competitions.

8.What does the author advise newcomers to do
A.Face physical challenges boldly.
B.Learn from experienced traceurs.
C.Start from leaping over a mailbox.
D.Consider the risk of severe harm.
最后一句“After all, philosophy is not much good to a broken leg.”
