In 1998, a group of friends was making soup together when inspiration struck: they wondered if they could turn their vegetables into musical instruments. The idea started as a joke, but they decided to test it out since they were signed up to perform at an upcoming music festival. That’s when the Vegetable Orchestra was born. In the 25 years since, the group has used fresh carrots, pumpkins, and other vegetables to create around 100 instruments, release four albums, and perform more than 300 concerts all over the world.
Not all vegetables are suitable for music; they need to be fresh enough to handle drilling and shaping and the right size and shape to produce the required sound. The most challenging part is preparing for each performance, as the musicians have to constantly make new instruments. Fresh vegetables only last a few hours after being cut and handled. Therefore, for each city on their tour, they need to buy fresh vegetables that look and sound interesting in local markets. They then use drills (钻头), knives, and other kitchen tools to turn the vegetables into violins, flutes, and other instruments.
Over the decades, the Vegetable Orchestra’s performance style has changed significantly. Even though the carrot flute and leek violin that appeared at the first concert remain dependable parts of the collection, the way the orchestra approaches them has matured and transformed over the years. “In the early days, we were trying to make the vegetables fit our musical compositions; now, it tends to be the other way around,” explains Ingrid Schl gl, a classically trained musician and singer who joined the orchestra in 2004. “We are developing towards exploring the music of the vegetables and digging deeper into this element.”
Today, the group engages in a variety of musical styles — from free jazz to experimental electronic. Each member builds their own instruments and develops their specialties over time. They create their musical compositions through an intensely collaborative process and have developed their own system of musical notation (音乐符号). They have no leader and perform without a conductor, relying on body language to communicate during performances. “We are such individual people, but when we are on stage, we are like one body,” says Schl gl.
4. What inspires the formation of the Vegetable Orchestra
A. A cooking experience. B. A joke about soup.
C. A music festival. D. A performer’s suggestion.
5. What is the most challenging part for the group of musicians
A. Finding suitable vegetables.
B. Making vegetables sound interesting.
C. Creating new instruments for each show.
D. Keeping vegetables fresh during their tours.
6. What does Ingrid Schl gl reveal about their current performances
A. They are experimenting with more types of vegetables.
B. They are exploring the musical potential of vegetables.
C. They are trying to perform classical music with vegetables.
D. They are improving the appearance of vegetable instruments.
7. Which of the following words can best describe the group
A. Disciplined and talented. B. Thoughtful and humorous.
C. Ambitious and conservative. D. Cooperative and innovative.
C
There are few things better than a cold drink on a hot summer day. However, with rising energy costs from refrigeration (制冷) each year, it’s high time humanity developed a more eco-friendly way to chill drinks. Enter Delta H Innovations, a London-based company that claims to have developed the world’s first self-cooling aluminum can (铝罐) — the “Cool Can”.
The Cool Can looks like a normal aluminum drink can except for the large “power” button on the bottom. The base of the can serves as a hidden water container, while the space between the can’s double aluminum walls holds special cooling salts. When the button is pressed, the water is released and reacts with the salts, creating a chemical reaction that rapidly chills the drink. The company claims that the Cool Can can lower the temperature of its liquid contents to about 6-7℃ and keep them cool for up to 45 minutes.
According to James Vyse, the founder of Delta H Innovations, the added cost to the consumer will be hardly noticeable, especially since the Cool Can significantly reduces refrigeration costs. It is fully recyclable and can be used almost anywhere. However, to make room for the self-cooling system, a 500ml-sized can holds only about 70% of the volume of a conventional can of the same size, which may slightly limit its capacity for certain uses.
Jonatan Pinkse, a professor of sustainable business at King’s Business School, London, pointed out that the can uses more aluminum than regular cans, due to its double-layered aluminum design, which could result in a higher environmental footprint. While acknowledging this concern, he also noted that the potential for widespread adoption of this design could still contribute to more sustainable practices in the long run, as it could reduce the need for energy-intensive (耗能的) refrigeration in commercial settings such as supermarkets. This, he explained, would be especially relevant if the technology could be adopted more widely, potentially creating a shift in consumer behavior and influencing product design.
8. Why was the Cool Can developed
A. To extend the shelf life of drinks.
B. To improve the flavor of cold drinks.
C. To reduce the cost of producing aluminum cans.
D. To provide an energy-efficient way to chill drinks.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the Cool Can
A. Its designing process. B. Its working principle.
C. Its ordinary materials. D. Its broad applications.
10. What is a disadvantage of the Cool Can
A. It has a limited capacity.
B. It is difficult to transport.
C. It requires special facilities to recycle.
D. It can only be used in certain situations.·
11. Which statement about the Cool Can would Jonatan Pinkse probably agree with
A. It will potentially bring long-term environmental benefits.
B. The extra aluminum usage denies its eco-friendly advantages.
C. The innovative double-layered structure will be well received.
D. It has a smaller business value than traditional refrigeration systems.
D
From an airplane, cars moving slowly down the highway look like ants. But unlike cars, actual ants somehow manage to avoid stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are now studying these insects’ cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.
The previous research by Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical physicist at the University of Tokyo, had shown that foraging (觅食的) ants can maintain their flow even when it’s very crowded. So what’s their secret In a recent study, researchers recorded Ochetellus ants on foraging paths and used traffic-engineering models to analyze their movement. They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of three to twenty that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.
Human drivers at rush hour are hardly likely to follow such rules. “We’re maximizing the interest of individuals, which is why at a given point you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno, who studies solid mechanics at the University of Trento in Italy. However, self-driving cars could have more cooperative programming if they one day become widespread. In one vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would share information with nearby cars to enhance traffic flow by prioritizing (优先考虑) constant speeds and time intervals or by not passing others on the road. This vehicle network would be similar to ants on a path, which use scent to coordinate behavior while interacting with one another.
However, today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam: don’t tailgate. By leaving room between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can prevent small slowdowns from turning into big traffic jams. Maintaining a steady speed rather than frequent speed-up and braking (刹车) can also help reduce the likelihood of traffic jams, making the journey smoother and safer for everyone on the road.
12. Why do ants never get caught in traffic jams
A. They are small and travel slowly. B. They have a special sense of direction.
C. They always move in a similar foraging path. D. They keep a steady speed and a suitable distance.
13. How might self-driving cars reduce traffic jams
A. By adjusting routes in real time. B. By moving along the dedicated lanes.
C. By sharing data with surrounding vehicles. D. By monitoring road conditions with sensors.
14. What does the underlined word “tailgate” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Brake suddenly. B. Follow closely. C. Drive quickly. D. Turn sharply.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Reasons for Modern Traffic Jams B. Methods to Manage Traffic Flow
C. Ant-Inspired Solutions for Smoother Traffic D. Interaction-Based Traffic Systems on City Roads

Be a true runner
For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one’s first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12-year-old who hasn’t been in other events to run the two-mile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置。
In a moment, Bill was up again and running.

In a moment, Bill was up and running. I couldn’t think of anything but to follow him closely. I could even feel the air hitting my face and I was totally worn out. Naturally, my pace slowed down. Just at the moment, Barry’s words “Just follow Bill” called me back. Convinced that I was no longer a loser, I refreshed up again and accelerated and soon I was quite close to Bill again. Injected with confidence, I headed for the finishing line. The gun cracked again, announcing the last 200 meters. I closed my eyes, threw my head back and ran with my last ounce of strength, in the direction of the dream line.
I didn’t know when I crossed the line. I still kept running on when a thunderous applause burst, which signaled the birth of the champion. Showered with hugs and applause and whistles, I felt a surge of gaiety sweeping over me. Just as Hemingway put it, “The true nobility is superior to your former self.”
