Bears across Europe are competing, not for food or mates, but for who can sleep the longest. Inspired by March Madness, March Napness is an annual competition where hibernating (冬眠) bears “compete” to see who will remain in hibernation the longest. It is run by Four Paws, a global animal welfare organization.
“The sleepiest bear wins,” said Claire LaFrance, head of communications for Four Paws. “The bear that remains sleeping the longest is crowned king or queen for that year.”
According to LaFrance, Four Paws has over 135 rescued brown bears in seven shelters around the globe. Six of them are in Europe, where the competition is held. The competitors are European brown bears. Most of them have been rescued from improper or inadequate keeping conditions and can’t be returned to the wild.
This year, 23 bears started the competition. LaFrance said the bears at Four Paws shelters typically start hibernating between October and November. “Some bears prefer to make their own dens (兽窝), and some bears prefer that we provide them with the dens so they do none of the work.” said LaFrance.
The bears can sleep deep into April. So far, more than half of the bears have woken up. In order for them to be disqualified, they need to be awake for five straight days. Bears don’t wake up consistently at the same time every year, so the results of this competition aren’t easy to predict. LaFrance said the biggest surprise this year came in week one from one of last year’s finalists. At their bear shelter in Ukraine, a bear named Tyson woke up in the early stages of the competition.
Four Paws hopes March Napness inspires people to learn about bears and ways to protect them. Beyond that, Four Paws hopes people following the tournament learn a thing or two from the sleepy competitors. “I think they can really help bring back the movement that sleep is self-care and there’s no harm in taking a little nap when you need it,” LaFrance said.
4.What can be learned about March Napness
A.It takes place throughout the world. B.It is a yearly competition for bears.
C.It is organized by a European company. D.It concerns bears of different kinds.
5.Which of the following is TRUE
A.Four Paws has seven shelters in Europe.
B.The contest helps release bears to the wild.
C.The winner of the contest is unpredictable.
D.The bears prepare their own places to rest in.
6.Why does Four Paws organize March Napness
A.To select bears suitable for returning to the wild.
B.To study the hibernation patterns of brown bears.
C.To stress the value of bear preservation and sleep.
D.To compete with other animal welfare organizations.
7.Which is the best title of this text
A.Bears Sleep to Win B.Bears Sleep to Survive

These days, we’re all well aware of the plastic problem the world’s facing. We’re reminded of this issue all the time, whether that’s by being encouraged to recycle, or by having to pay for disposable carrier bags.
Although we all realize what a serious issue plastic pollution is, it’s different when you actually see the overwhelming results of it for yourself. This was the situation a team of researchers who recently published a study on the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch (垃圾带) in the journal Scientific Reports found themselves in. According to the study, the patch, which is located off the coast of California, US, is made up of 79,000 tons of plastic waste and covers 1.6 million square kilometers. It’s over four times the size of Japan, or almost 100 times the size of Beijing.
“I’ve been doing this research for a while, but it was depressing to see [the patch in person],” Laurent Lebreton, lead author of the study, told the Guardian. “There were things you just wondered how they made it into the ocean. There’s clearly an increasing influx of plastic into the garbage patch.”
It’s believed that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the sea each year, and a lot of it ends up collecting near largo ocean currents around the world, forming “islands” of plastic. This causes problems not only for son creatures but also for humans. The swirling ocean currents eventually break down some of the plastic, with a lot of it ending up in the digestive systems of fish and birds.
As a result, it’s believed that plastic has worked its way up the food chain directly onto our plates — not to mention the countless creatures that choke on plastic waste, or are poisoned by the chemicals in it.
So what can we do about this
Lebreton is a member of the Ocean Cleanup Foundation, a group that’s developed technology to collect plastic waste from the ocean. This is a huge project, with the group claiming it will take around five years just to clean up half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone. But rather than discourage people from using plastic altogether, Lebreton believes that we should simply be more mindful of how we use it. “In my opinion, plastic is very useful. But I think we must divert (转移) the way we use plastic, particularly in terms of single-use plastic and those objects that have a very short service lifespan,” he told BBC News.
8.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. B.A study on plastic pollution.
C.Lebreton and his research. D.Cleaning ocean of plastic.

A.is about four times the size of Beijing.
B.is harmful to both sea creatures and humans.
C.consists of about 1.6 million tons of plastic waste.
D.was formed because of swirling ocean currents.
10.What can we learn from the passage
A.People should be more careful with their use of plastic products.
B.Single-use plastic should be banned for the sake of the environment.
C.The Great Pacific Garbage Patch will be cleaned up in about five years.
D.Plastic products with short service lifespans should be replaced.
11.What is the text probably from
A.A business report B.A textbook C.A magazine D.Science fiction

Monitoring a person’s pulse (脉搏) continuously can offer meaningful and important medical information, such as heart rate and, indirectly, blood pressure. However, pulse waves can change a lot from person to person and even within the same person at different times of day and during different activities. These changes make it difficult for current wearable pulse sensors to collect accurate data, which is especially problematic for those with cardiovascular (心血管的) diseases or high-risk factors for those diseases.
To solve this problem, a team led by Penn State researchers looked first not to the future, but back—to principles of pulse monitoring in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Using these principles, the researchers designed a pressure-sensing platform to identify the best pulse signal, which they combined with a machine learning model to also predict blood pressure. They published their results in Advanced Materials.
“According to TCM, doctors would take the pulse at three positions on the wrist: cun, guan and chi,” said co-author Larry Cheng, Jr. Memorial Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State. “As they use three fingers to press at these locations, they increase the pressure to measure the pulse from shallow to deeper. This method provides a more accurate reading of pulse signals, whether the person is active or resting.” Cheng explained that in order to design a wearable health monitor, they used two ideas, adaptive pressures and various wrist locations. The researchers used 3D printing to print a sensor array (阵列)—one device with several sensors. The principles of TCM allow them to address the limitations of using just one point on the wrist and to better collect data from different places on the wrist and at several depths.
“The sensor array is completely printed, which is cheaper than traditional methods of constructing a sensor. This also makes the sensor array easier to operate, improving its design as a wearable device,” Cheng said.
12.What is the main problem with current wearable pulse sensors
A.They are too expensive for common people to consume.
B.They are too difficult for people to continuously operate.
C.They can’t collect accurate data due to pulse wave changes.
D.They are useless for people with cardiovascular diseases.
13.How did the researchers improve pulse signal detection in their design
A.By decreasing the number of sensors on the wrist.
B.By combining adaptive pressure and multiple wrist locations.
C.By using artificial intelligence to replace traditional methods.
D.By only concentrating on shallow pulse measurements.
14.What is the purpose of writing this text
A.To introduce the current problems of producing wearable pulse sensors.
B.To describe why researchers collect accurate pulse data with 3D printing.
C.To explain the principles of pulse monitoring in traditional Chinese medicine.
D.To show the application of traditional Chinese medicine in pulse monitoring.
15.What is the best title for the text
A.Old Wisdom Meets New Tech: TCM Inspires Pulse Sensors.
B.Old methods in New Devices: TCM Adopts AI for Pulse Analysis.
C.Old Herbs Meet Digital Tools: TCM builds New Sensor Software.
D.Old ideas in Modern Machines: TCM carries Pulse Sensor Errors.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With most of today’s written communication typed out on the computer, you may not see much of a reason to improve your handwriting. But from time to time, you still need to write by hand. 16 Just like most aspects of life, you can improve your handwriting with practice. But, first of all, you have to do some preparations for your practice.
Find a space and comfort.
If you’ve ever struggled to sign a paper or write a note with no table in sight, you know that comfort is necessary when you want to write down pretty words. Sit down at a stable (稳定的), spacious desk, where you can write in your free time. Keep desk lamps, cups, and any decorations far from you. 17
Keep things flat.
When it comes to the actual paper, it’s a good idea to keep things as flat as possible. 18 But if you hate the trouble of having disorganized pieces of paper all over the place, the thin notebook will work too. Thinner notebooks will keep your hand from losing support.
19
You should use some kind of guideline at this stage. It could be lines, or something that can serve as guidelines. This will help you judge the direction of your handwriting and the size and consistency (一致性) of your letters. So, avoid blank pages until you’re more comfortable with your handwriting.
Find the right tool.
Get a pen you like. The best way to know if a pen is right for you is to try it. If you can, go to a stationery store and take your time trying the pens there. 20 If you have no idea where to start, you can always give some fan favorites a test drive.
Now, practice, practice, practice! Repetition is key to learning, and it will get your body used to the changes you want to make to your personal handwriting.
A.Make the paper adapt to you.
B.Focus more on form than on consistency.
C.Then, you realize your handwriting doesn’t look great.
D.So, a single piece of paper is better than a notebook.
E.Also, you should enjoy this-keep it fun and relaxing.
F.Maybe you can buy two or three to keep testing at home.
G.That way, you can move freely without the fear of knocking something down.

AI 38 (use) to imitate (模仿) the music of popular artists recently. In 2021, a “new” Nirvana track, named Drowned in the Sun, was posted online. Casual listeners might think a 39 (lose) Kurt Cobain song had been discovered but actually the AI-generated one was totally different from the 40 (origin) one.
Pianist, composer and technologist Kanga says, “It is surprising how 41 (good) it can imitate someone else. I’ve heard some very good imitations. These things are very good at imitating a particular composer or artist for a short period of time. However, AI has some way 42 (go) until it can successfully imitate composers and performers of longer pieces of music.”
“At 43 certain point, it can copy someone’s sound or style very well. But I’m not sure how much that will move you, compared to 44 (listen) to the real thing. 第二节 (满分25分)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a cold November morning in 2018, Alexis Agnew walked into the hospital for what she assumed would be a 20-minute physical.
The doctor told her, “Just some bloodwork and a quick scan (扫描检查).” But when the scan was going on, there seemed to be something wrong. “There’s an irregularity,” the doctor said and suggested she have a follow-up examination.
Alexis was afraid that she might have cancer. At 24, cancer had been an abstract thing —something that happened to other people’s grandparents. Now, it was a 50/50-coin toss in her body. She thought of her mother, a cancer survivor who’ d lost her hair to chemo (化疗). And because it was supposed to be a regular appointment, she hadn’t brought anyone with her. She left the exam room in tears.
As she exited the building, she passed by the front desk. An office employee was there, having her lunch. “She stopped me and asked, ‘What’s the matter, baby Are you OK ’” Alexis said. Such tenderness (亲切) made her cry even harder.
The office employee, whose name was Emma, looked at Alexis with genuine concern. “Hey, take a seat,” Emma said, pointing to a nearby chair. “Let’s talk.”
Alexis hesitated but then sat down. Patiently, Emma listened to Alexis explain what had just happened. Alexis told Emma her worries and fear. “After I had finished talking, she asked me if I wanted a hug. I just started crying harder. So she pulled me close and held me as I cried.” After the long-awaited hug, Alexis gradually calmed down. When she looked up at Emma with red eyes, Emma gave her a warm smile and said, “Honey, we don’t know for sure what this is yet. You’ve got to stay positive.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then she shared her own experience of facing health scares.

46.Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua, a senior high school student confused about how to complete my continuation writing tasks. I’m writing to seek your guidance and assistance.
Recently, I’ve been faced with a lot of difficulties in this part of the exam. Although I can understand the given passage, I struggle to create a smooth and logical continuation of the story. For example, I often find it hard to develop the plot naturally or describe characters’ emotions vividly. Additionally, connecting my paragraphs with proper transitions remains a major challenge for me.
Could you please share some practical tips to improve these skills Any advice from you would be greatly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
47.Then she shared her own experience of facing health scares. She told Alexis about a time when she thought she had a serious illness but it turned out to be a false alarm. As they talked, Emma also offered practical advice. She suggested that Alexis make a list of questions to ask during the follow-up examination and even offered to accompany her if Alexis wanted. “I know it can be scary going through these things alone,” Emma said.
After listening to Emma’s experience and advice, Alexis felt much better. She was deeply touched by Emma’s kindness. Emma’s story was filled with hope, which slowly began to lift Alexis’s spirits. When it was time for Alexis to leave, she gave Emma a tight hug. “Thank you so much, Emma. You’ve been an angel to me today,” Alexis said with gratitude in her voice. Emma smiled, replying, “You’re welcome, dear. Just remember to stay strong and positive. No matter what comes your way, you should have the inner strength to overcome it.”
