If you are outside in a big field and your friend far across the field is calling to you, you look up and see him easily. If it is foggy outside, you may be able to see your friend, too. I came to China many years ago, but I still have problems calling my Chinese husband’s relatives (亲戚) the right names. There are many differences in what we call our family members in China and the West.
Remembering the right names
Every time I visit my husband’s family in China, I feel nervous. His two aunties come and I can never remember their names. Are they “Xiao Gu” or “Er Gu” or something else
In English-speaking countries, for aunties and uncles, we just add their names at the end, for example: “Aunt Jenny”, or just call them by their first name.
