▲ of Making Tanghulu
Step 1:
Start off by washing the haws (山楂) or any other fruit you choose. Once done, dry the fruit. Don’t forget this
step.
Step 2:
Put the fruit on bamboo sticks. If you use long sticks, put 4—6 pieces of fruit on each stick. If you use short
ones, 1—3 pieces are enough.
Step 3:
Add water and white sugar in a pan and then mix them well. Heat the pan until bubbles (气泡) appear and
color changes. When doing this, you can test the temperature of the mixture by dipping a spoon of the mixture in
cold water. When the mixture hardens immediately, you have the right temperature. It is the key to making perfect
Tanghulu.
Step 4:
Now, dip each fruit stick into the sugar mixture to easily coat the fruit. Remember to turn it to coat all of the
sides.
Step 5:
Once done, place each stick on a plate. Remember to leave enough space between each other to stop them
from sticking. After a few minutes, you can taste them.

Learning to be polite in a new language isn’t easy. Every language has special ways to be polite, and knowing
how to use these rules can make a big difference.
One simple way to make your English sound more polite is to use modal verbs. You probably already know
modal verbs like “could” “would” “might” and “shall”. While these verbs are used to talk about ability or
possibility, they’re also a great way to make your English sound more polite, especially when you are asking
questions. For example, asking someone “Do you want to have dinner with me ” sounds direct. But if you use a
modal verb—“Would you like to have dinner with me ”—it sounds much nicer! Modal verbs are also used when
you ask for something. “Could you open the window, please ” sounds much better than just “Open the window,
please.”
Another way to sound more polite in English is to use the passive voice. This is helpful in situations where it
might be rude to directly point out someone’s actions or mistakes. For example, “The computer wasn’t turned of.”
sounds nicer than “Bob forgot to turn off the computer.”
You can also use the past tense. For example, when you check into a hotel, the staff might ask, “Did you need
any help with your luggage (行李) ” Although the past tense is usually used to describe things that have already
happened, it’s also a way to show your politeness.

No one expected that Baduanjin would become popular among young Chinese people.
In the past couple of years, an online teaching video of Baduanjin, a form of Qigong, has been played for more
than 10 million times. “I have been doing Baduanjin for about four months. It helps me sleep better and get
stronger. I like Baduanjin very much because it gives me a much healthier lifestyle,” a young man said.
Baduanjin is one of the oldest health and fitness approaches in China, originally created over 800 years ago
during the Song Dynasty. Its name is made up of two parts, namely “baduan” and “jin”. The first part refers to
eight separate movements. And the second part refers to the stretch and grace (优美) of the movements.
Compared to sports such as ball games or swimming, Baduanjin is slow and usually played with quiet music,
so it used to be considered as a sport for the elders. In recent years, however, many young people came to realize
the advantages of the sport. It helped kill their neck and back pain after long working hours while not requiring
much effort, time and space.
Sun Yuxuan, a college student majoring in martial arts, has also noticed the rising popularity of Baduanjin.
The 21-year-old girl has been teaching other students to practice Baduanjin for over three years. They started with
20 members in 2019 and the group has 45 members now. “Every member in the group is very active. I didn’t

expect that it could attract so many young people. I guess that’s because they receive real benefits (好处) from the
sport,” she said.
54. What does the underlined word “approaches” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Ways. B. Ideas. C. Suggestions.
55. What do we know about Baduanjin

These days, a show in Baoji, Shaanxi Province, tells how pillows (枕头) can be much more than just places to
put our heads while we sleep. The show runs until April 10th. It displays (陈列) 121 ancient pillows from the
Western Han Dynasty until early 20th century.
“These pillows, made of different materials, are not just daily things, but also have cultural and historical
value,” says Guo Jing, director of the show. “They show interesting folk cultures and carry memories of the past.
We hope that these treasures can help visitors enter the world of the ancients.”
In ancient China, pillows expressed people’s good wishes. Cat-shaped pillows, for example, stood for hopes
that a couple would enjoy good health while growing old together.
A special pillow is the pearl (珍珠) one found in the tomb of the King of Nanyue, a kingdom that was founded
after the fall of the Qin Dynasty, mainly including what are now Guangdong and Guangxi. The pillow was made of
470 unprocessed pearls, showing the high position of its owner.
Another special pillow is a tiger-head one, which stands for courage and strength. “In ancient times, these
pillows were often for children. And they were the symbol of good luck and healthy growth,” Guo explains.
There are several ideas about why ancient pillows are hard rather than soft. One idea is that hard pillows
better support the neck and head, improve blood circulation (循环) in the eyes and improve eyesight. Also, ceramic
(陶瓷) pillows are cooler and can help lower body temperatures, making people feel more comfortable in the
summer heat.
