Due to the fact that the average life expectancy in Ghana is 64 years and the most common causes of death are largely treatable conditions, such as malaria, stroke, and respiratory infections,Boateng, growing up in a small village in southern Ghana struggling to access basic health care, felt an urgent call to help and decided he would make it his life’s mission to bring health care to remote communities in Ghana.
Boateng worked hard in school, getting a scholarship to study biology at Cornell University in the US,and ultimately earned his master’s in Healthcare Administration.Later he started his nonprofit,OKB Hope Foundation, and converted a van into a mobile doctor’s office called the Hope Health Van to bring health care directly to those in need in 2021.
A few times a week, the mobile clinic and medical team travel long distances to remote communities in Ghana and provide free routine medical care.On each trip,Boateng’s team consists of a nurse,a physician’s assistant,a doctor, and an operation assistant. In the van, they can run basic labs like bloodwork and urinalysis as well as prescribe and provide medications.“It’s like a one-stop shop for people,” said Boateng, adding that most of the people they see have one health issue or another.
Since its launch,Boateng says the Hope Health Van has served more than 4,000 Ghanaians across more than 45 rural communities who otherwise don’t have easily accessible medical care.To supplement the mobile clinic,Boateng’s organization has also trained 20 volunteers to serve as local health advocates. They check people’s vitals and provide the medical team with timely data for assessing how to move forward with care and treatment, especially for those whose health is at risk.
In the future,Boateng hopes to expand to provide more consistent and high-quality medical care not only to those living in remote areas of Ghana but in other countries as well.“I believe that our model can be replicated in Sub-Saharan Africa,” he said.

Whether due to genuine concern for the environment or the widespread criticism of plastic among consumers, many companies have invested heavily in reducing their use of plastic packaging, which may indeed have a positive environmental impact. But another trend that’s grown out of the anti-plastic movement is a lot less positive:overpackaging.More and more brands have begun adding unnecessary paper packaging on top of plastic packaging in order to make their products look more environmentally friendly, without actually reducing plastic waste.
Unfortunately, there’s a very good reason companies are adopting this clearly problematic approach.Through a series of eight studies with more than 4,000 participants,we found that consumers will accept a product’s packaging as more environmentally friendly if it’s plastic with an additional layer of paper than if the product is visibly packaged in identical plastic packaging but without the paper. The perception(认知) in turn makes consumers both more likely to buy a product, and willing to pay more for it.
Part of what makes this overpackaging trend particularly harmful is that it is much valued by consumers who reported engaging in more eco-friendly behaviors. They were more likely to view overpackaged products as environmentally friendly. As a result, the very consumers who are most interested in pushing companies to make sustainable choices are likely unintentionally encouraging the environmentally harmful practice of overpackaging.
The good news is,overpackaging isn’t the only way to signal sustainability and attract such consumers. In our studies,we found that instead of additional paper packaging, simply adding a minimal packaging sticker to plastic packaging could clarify the misperception that overpackaged products are more sustainable.Especially for products for which plastic is necessary to ensure safe transportation and lengthen shelf life, this kind of clear messaging can help reduce consumers’ discrimination against the responsible use of plastic packaging.
Of course, minimal packaging stickers certainly should only be used if a brand has actually ensured that it is using the minimal possible packaging, ideally under the supervision of a trade organization or regulatory body that maintains clear, consistent standards.
28.What can we learn about overpackaging according to paragraph 1
A.It calls for less investment.
B.It involves the proper use of paper.
C.It has a positive environmental impact.
D.It causes over-consumption of materials.
29.What do the eight studies find about consumers according to the text
A.They care about the environment.
B.They are always following the trend.
C.They like comparing products’ qualities.
D.They prefer beautifully-decorated products.
30.What function is expected of minimal packaging stickers
A.To help products stay fresh.
B.To improve a brand’s popularity.
C.To correct consumers’ misunderstanding.
D.To present more information about products.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Minimal packaging stickers have been widely used.
B.Advantages of minimal packaging stickers are overestimated.
C.The use of minimal packaging stickers should be strictly regulated.
D.The use of minimal packaging stickers is a solution to overpackaging.
D
You see a shopper trip over in a busy street.Someone else can help. That’s what you tell yourself. This is the Bystander Effect in action—the dilution(淡化) of our sense of responsibility in the presence of others—and it has been demonstrated in many past studies.
But life is complicated and psychologists have seen exceptional circumstances. Two experiments were conducted by Marco van Bommel and his team using an online chat room for people with extreme emotional problems.Eighty-six students were logged into the forum(论坛) and shown five messages from troubled users. They were told to write a reply if they wanted, but it was entirely up to them.
Basically, participants could see their names on the screen alongside others’ names.A counter also told them if the forum was quiet, with just one other person logged in,or busy, with 30 others online. This arrangement reproduced the classic Bystander Effect—participants were less likely to post replies with more people logged in.However, when the researchers cued(提示) self-awareness by highlighting participants’ names in red on the screen, they posted more replies on a busy forum.
A second study was built on these findings, but this time self-awareness was raised by the presence,or not,of a computer web-camera.Over 100 participants took part.Although told the camera wouldn’t be used until later, those with cameras were asked to check the camera’s indicator-light during the study. The Bystander Effect was reproduced when web-cameras were absent—on busy forums participants posted fewer replies to needy users.By contrast, those cued to be self-aware by the webcam actually wrote more replies.
Nearly any online community can benefit from the research. The ability to turn hesitant bystanders into eager helpers is a recipe for engagement and collective benefit. As in the research, simple design cues could be integrated to help online users remember they are visible to the community. For example, the size of profile images and specific on-site reminders can be used to highlight how users see themselves within the community.
32.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.The hidden danger of a busy street.
B.The Bystander Effect in action.
C.The dilution of our sense of responsibility.
D.The presence of other people.
33.When did the participants post more replies to the troubled in the first study
A.When there were more emotional problems.
B.When the counter indicated the forum was busy.
C.When their presence was reminded on the screen.
D.When more individuals were logged in the forum.
34.Why is the web-camera used in the second study
A.To encourage more replies.
B.To reproduce the Bystander Effect.
C.To further test participants’ mindset.
D.To better record participants’ actions.
35.What can online communities learn from the research
A.Working together to attract more users.
B.Designs to boost users’ memory.
C.Building more platforms for public promotion.
D.Ways to change bystanders into upstanders.

The secret to truly enjoying life lies in making small changes to everyday lives.Taking care of yourself and connecting with others are just some of the ways you can live a happy life. We’ve made an extensive list of practical tips. 36
Put yourself and your happiness first. While making a decision, choose the things that will make you the most pleased. 37 When you focus on your passions and interests, you’ll feel more optimistic and energized. And allow yourself to be involved in the small things that can keep your spirits up,such as going for a short walk each day.
Reward yourself for making progress and continuing to grow.Make sure to celebrate even the smallest signs of progress and growth rather than only praising yourself for the successes.Give yourself an encouraging gesture or word occasionally. 38 Or,be sure to reward yourself with small breaks throughout the workday.
39 Rather than bottling up all of your thoughts and keeping them to yourself, let others know when you need something.Doing so can help you become more confident and feel like you have control over your life. When you speak your mind and live life on your own terms, you’ll be more content.
Turn off the news every now and then.Consuming too much negative news can lead to stress. While it’s great to keep up with current events, the news can have a bad effect on your happiness levels if lots of negative things have happened recently. 40 If you still want to read, avoid potentially stressful topics.
A.Be honest about your wants and needs.
B.Don’t be afraid to seek out new experiences.

At the end of my junior year, election for student body officers caused quite an excitement among students. It appeared that Debbie would run unopposed for president.Talking among a group of dissatisfied girls,I whispered,“There must be someone who’d run against her.”
Suddenly Liz focused her attention on me.“Why not you?”
“Me No way.I work after school.I can’t stay for all those meetings.”
My closest friend,Linda, smiled,“Why not Just think how great our senior year would be! You could get a real senior trip approved and get better bands for the dances.”
My little group continued to ignore my protests as they imagined the wonderful changes I could make.By the end of the week, they’d gotten enough signatures to put my name on the ballot(选票).
Debbie and I had very different campaign styles.Because I was always skipping around,I earned the name “Rabbit”.Signs soon appeared around campus with the slogan(口号) “Make your votes count with Rabbit!” My platform aimed for more fun and less restrictions. We wore uniforms and I advocated more free dress days and a broader interpretation of what was acceptable on regular dress days.
My opponent,on the other hand, avoided any implication of silliness on her posters.Catchy slogans had no place in her serious campaign. What she offered was the opening lawn to all students and a reformatting of the yearbook that would mix ninth through twelfth graders rather than highlight seniors in oversized photos.Gone would be the yearbook with seniors’ quotes and many exciting activities.Lowerclassmen(低年级生) loved Debbie’s idea; would-be seniors, however, were angry.
My classmates supported me and were confident they could persuade enough lowerclassmen to vote my way. Each day I got reports of a few more of lowerclassmen coming to my side.
On election day,I felt fairly confident.I was even looking forward to quitting my job and focusing on school politics.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
However,by the end of the day,the votes were counted and Debbie was declared the winner.

W:It certainly is.I often wonder about its size.In school,my teacher once said there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on Earth’s beaches...But that surely can’t be true.
M:Actually,it is.Carl Sagan, the author of a book called Cosmos, said this. Most scientists estimate that there are around ten times more stars than there are grains of sand on all of Earth’s beaches!
W:Wow,that is unbelievable!
M:I know!Hey,speaking of sand and beaches, have you thought about where we’re going on holiday this year?Do you still want to go to Italy for its fine food?Or would you prefer Spain for its wonderful beaches
W:Actually,I found a lovely hotel in Iceland. There are high-powered telescopes on the top floor of the hotel specifically for looking at the stars!
M:What?Book it now!

M:Why are you so sad,Angela
W:Oh,my sister Marilyn just told me she got a job in Boston and she’s moving away.
M:That’s great news. You should be happy for her.
W:I know I should be happy, but my sister and I have always been close. It’s hard for me to live so far away from her.
M:Don’t take it too badly. You can video chat with her.You won’t even feel she’s far away.
W:That’s true,I suppose. But it would be better if she found a job here.
M:Come on.Boston is a really cool city. You can go there for vacations.
W:You’re right.I feel much better now.Thank you,Andy.

W:Hello,Randall.This is Nancy speaking.
M:Hi,Nancy.What’s up
W:Will you run the marathon in Beijing this Saturday
M:Sorry,I won’t.I love running, but I fell and hurt my leg badly last week.
W:I’m sorry to hear that.Hope you’ll get well soon.My husband Adam and I have signed up for it,but our car is being repaired.I was wondering if you could give us a lift.
M:Don’t worry. My son Joe decided to participate in it as he knew runners in the race could raise money for charity, which is the main purpose of this event.I suppose he can pick you up.
W:That would be perfect.Thanks a million!
M:No big deal.So when should Joe be at your house
W:The race begins at 7:00 a.m.and ends at 4:00 p.m.What about 5:00 a.m.?It will take us one hour to get to the destination, but we’d better set off early to avoid the traffic jam.And it is suggested that athletes should allow fifteen minutes to make preparations.
M:That’s OK.I will tell him about it and he will call you back.
Text 10
M:Welcome to the news report.Last Monday,a storm hit two villages. The roofs of fourteen houses were so badly damaged that their owners were afraid to live inside. The doors of seven other houses were damaged.Besides, the windows of fifteen other houses were damaged. One person was killed, and nine were badly injured and taken to hospital.A number of other people sustained minor injuries.Altogether over two hundred people were homeless as a result of the storm.A farmer said the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour.He was in the kitchen with his wife when they heard a loud noise.A few minutes later, their house fell down. They managed to climb out,but then he saw that one of his children was missing. He went back inside and found him safe but very frightened. An old woman said that her husband had just left home when she noticed that her house was shaking. Her first response was to take their grandchildren out immediately. There was no time for her to take anything.A few minutes later, the roof came down.Rescuers went to the area to help the people in trouble.

Dear Mr Smith,
I hope this email finds you well.I am writing to express my concerns about the decision to cancel the English club activities for our grade.
As a senior,I do understand the reason behind the decision. But with all due respect,I believe this decision will have a negative impact on our overall learning experience.English club can bring us a lot of fun and also enhance our language skills and creativity, which in turn makes us study more efficiently.
I suggest you reschedule it for us seniors as we are able to strike a balance between study and pastime.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua

2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
However,by the end of the day,the votes were counted and Debbie was declared the winner.

However,by the end of the day,the votes were counted and Debbie was declared the winner. And I had only one vote less than Debbie! Disappointment seized me! At the same time,I felt ashamed of myself, for I had pictured more than once to defeat Debbie, and I had been thinking my platform had more advantages. What’s more,my classmates were so supportive to me.How could I face them I rushed to the library and found a corner, sitting alone, weeping and lost in a bad mood.
That’s when I noticed my teacher Mr Laskey, who turned to me and smiled,“Congratulations!” Hearing this,I was totally at sea.Mr Laskey stroked my head, saying gently,“I admire you for being so courageous to challenge yourself! There is no doubt that Debbie is outstanding, but so are you! You are absolutely promising!” Greatly encouraged,I wiped my tears, bidding farewell to Mr Laskey and walking confidently to my supporters.Though I didn’t become president,I was still excited to be one of the student body officers.I expressed my sincere gratitude, and decided to serve both juniors and seniors wholeheartedly.
