I grew up in a small village in Norway called , a place no one has ever heard of. A town with a one-letter name is unusual, though. The A with a small circle above it is one of three extra letters in the Norwegian alphabet (字母表), which means “still river”. Actually the village had a river, but unfortunately for the teenagers like me, was not a lively place. Nothing much happened there.
has always amazed visitors, however, and the house where I grew up was next to a central tourist attraction: the town sign. When I was growing up, I would like to look out of the living room window and see a car pull over, and someone get out to take a picture of the sign.
The school I attended until I was twelve is no longer a school since it is too small, so local kids now take a ten-minute bus ride to the next village. It is a blow for the village to lose its school, but I think the kids must be happier. I didn’t like going to a small school. I knew the birthdays and phone numbers of all eleven kids in my year, but only one was a real friend.
However, was a lovely place too. On the rare hot day, we’d drive for fifteen minutes into the mountains, to Resvatnet, which warms up all summer until you can finally run in the shallows and swim in the straw-colored water. Or at Easter, we’d make the same drive to the same lake, which freezes over in the winter, and walk very slowly on skis across the bright white snow.
“Everywhere is nice when it’s sunny,” my mother likes to say. But my memories of are filled with the endless winters, packed into layers against the freezing cold. I dreamed of sunshine and the city, wanting nothing more than to meet different kinds of people whose lives had been different to mine.
So now I live in London, which is a crowded city with eight million people. I don’t know why I sometimes miss the old days I spent in . Last summer I went back and I did what tourists do. I pulled over at the village sign, in the same spot where I’d seen so many people do the same, and I took a picture. Though it looks completely different, the house where I grew up is still there—and I’d like to think it’s home to kids who are watching me take that photo and doing what I used to do, rolling their eyes to think why someone would ever stop for something so unremarkable (平常的).

We all have trouble, and often make mistakes. However, many of us find it hard to admit(承认)them to others. So most of us would keep the problems to ourselves. We believe that our trouble and mistakes show our weakness, and we are afraid to let others see us as not good enough.
The good news is that our worries about the negative evaluations(负面评价)from others may not seem as serious as we imagine. A research suggested that we saw our act of showing weakness more negatively than others did, and researchers called this the “beautiful mess effect(效应)”. In other words, we may not be such a mess as we think.
This effect can stop us from sharing our true feelings and needs, which can actually have many advantages. For example, studies show that sharing personal information about oneself may help build closeness and trust, while saying sorry sincerely could repair a fractured relationship.
Therefore, researchers wanted to know how we could get over the “beautiful mess effect”. Their new experiments suggest that being self-compassionate(自我同情)can be very helpful when we want to find beauty in the mess of our own weakness.
In the study, researchers invited 340 university students to take part in four experiments. In one of them, students were asked to imagine themselves or another person admitting to their boss that they’d made a huge mistake on a project. Then, students needed to evaluate this act: Did they see it as an act of showing one’s courage or weakness Finally, researchers evaluated how self-compassionate the students were.
The study showed that students with low self-compassion evaluated their own act more negatively than when they imagined others admitting the same mistake. Highly self-compassionate students, on the other hand, were not much influenced by the “beautiful mess effect”. In other words, self-compassion helps us evaluate our act of showing weakness more fairly, stopping us from being too hard on ourselves.
Luckily, our level of self-compassion is not fixed and can be raised if we want to. With a kind and caring attitude towards ourselves, we can become more comfortable with showing our weakness. This practice, in turn, can improve our relationships.;
37.Why do people keep their problems to themselves according to the passage
A.To make as few mistakes as possible. B.To protect their personal information.
C.To build nice relationships with others. D.To stay away from negative evaluations.;
38.The word “fractured” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ”.
A.beautiful B.possible C.healthy D.broken;
39.The writer probably agrees that .
A.we have more advantages than we think
B.others don’t think we are a mess as we do
C.it’s easy to share our weakness with others
D.we can’t get over the “beautiful mess effect”;
40.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To discuss some ways to get over weakness.
B.To encourage people to be self-compassionate.
C.To invite people to share their worries every day.

How to Work on Your Self-esteem (自尊心)
At about six years old, my mum was brushing my hair one morning before school when I asked her a question. “Am I ugly ” I asked, looking at her and my reflection in the mirror before me. She said no, and asked me where this question was coming from. I told her a boy in my class had called me ugly on the playground.
That was the first time I remember feeling bad about myself. But that was just the beginning of a very long and troubled relationship with myself. That boy on the playground was for from the last person to call me ugly. He was certainly not the last person to make me question my sense of self. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way, and you might have a similar story about the first time you ever wondered aloud or quietly whether or not you were “ugly”, whether you were “not smart”, or whether you were a “bad person”. So here are some tips (建议) to anyone who has ever wondered what to do about long-lasting low self-esteem.
Challenge your negative thoughts
Negative (负面的) thoughts can make you believe that many of the terrible things you’ve thought about yourself are true. Every time you think or say something negative about yourself challenge it by telling yourself of something you did well or succeeded in.
You shouldn’t believe everything you think. If you often find yourself expecting the worst, you might form a way of thinking that isn’t quite right. Researchers suggest paying attention to your way of thinking, and thinking it over again if you notice you’re often too hard on yourself.
Keep an achievements journal
Every day, write down the things you did well or achieved that day in your journal. This could be anything from finishing a task at workplace to making your own lunch— whatever you feel proud of.
You can also use the journal to keep track (追踪) of different feelings you’re experiencing, finally steering (引导) it back to some positives. You can write down a few things you like about yourself as well. It may feel strange at first, but you’ll feel more comfortable when you practise it more.
Avoid comparing yourself to others
It’s really hard to avoid comparing yourself to others—especially if you spend much time on social media. If you’ re worried about social media’s influence on your self-esteem, unfollow what makes you feel bad about yourself.
You should tell yourself that life isn’t a competition. Every person is valuable and has his own successes and failings. The only person you need to compare yourself to is you.
41.Why did the writer feel bad about herself for the first time
42.What does the writer suggest writing in a journal to deal with low self-esteem
43.(1)Which tip do you think is the easiest one to follow
(2)Is the tip useful to people with long-lasting low self-esteem Why or why not

With the development of the society, to learn well is not the only thing a student should do. To be a qualified middle school student, I think we have a lot of things to do.
First, we should have good reading habits to improve ourselves. Second, we should pay attention to protecting the environment. We had better go to school on foot or by bicycle. Third, we should learn about good table manners and behave politely. We should wait for everyone to finish before leaving the table. In our spare time, we should care about the disabled and give them a chance to show their skills to the public. Luckily, I could see the smiles from teachers every day and receive caring words from my parents. I came to realize that they were always with me and would be proud of me if I tried my best. Now I listen to my teachers carefully in every lesson. With my effort, I have overcome the pressure of study.
