People said, “That’s terrible!” Again, the farmer said, “Maybe.” Well, because of his leg, the son didn’t have to join a war. That saved his life!

once upon a time 意为“从前;很久以前”, 相当于long long ago或a long time ago,是一般过去时的标志,通常用于故事的开头。
如:Once upon a time, there was a very old man.
从前,有一位老翁。

bite /ba t/ v.咬;咬伤; 既可作及物动词,又可作不及物动词。过去式为bit,读作/b t/。
如:Mosquitoes bit the little girl badly.

(2) promise作可数名词,意为“承诺;诺言”, make a/one’s promise 许下诺言,break a/one’s promise 违背诺,keep a/one’s promise 信守诺言
