Peter: Sure. Once a lion caught a mouse. The mouse was afraid. He said, “Please let me go! One day I will help you!” The lion laughed and let the mouse go. Later, a hunter caught the lion in a net. The mouse helped the lion then. He bit through the net and set the lion free!

People said, “That’s great!” But the farmer said, “Maybe.” Later, his son broke his leg when he tried to ride a horse. People said, “That’s terrible!” Again, the farmer said, “Maybe.” Well, because of his leg, the son didn’t have to join a war. That saved his life!

For example

1. Once upon a Time (教材P57标题)
once upon a time 意为“从前；很久以前”, 相当于long long ago或a long time ago，是一般过去时的标志，通常用于故事的开头。
如：Once upon a time, there was a very old man.
从前，有一位老翁。
bite /ba t/ v.咬；咬伤

bite /ba t/ v.咬；咬伤; 既可作及物动词，又可作不及物动词。过去式为bit，读作/b t/。
如：Mosquitoes bit the little girl badly.
蚊子把那个小姑娘咬得不行。（及物动词）
【谚语】Barking dogs seldom bite.
吠犬不咬人。（不及物动词)

我保证我会尽全力保护地球。
(2) promise作可数名词，意为“承诺；诺言”， make a/one’s promise 许下诺言，break a/one’s promise 违背诺，keep a/one’s promise 信守诺言
如：Once you make a promise, you must keep it.
一旦许下诺言，你就必须信守。
I got angry when he broke his promise.当他违背诺言时，我生气了。
