Burdah Rock Bridge Hike
This is one of the most amazing hikes in the Wadi Rum Desert. It is suitable for

Many people know the ancient Silk Road, but not everyone knows about the Hexi Corridor (走廊) and the
Qilian Mountains, two of the important parts of the ancient Silk Road.

Northwest China’s climate (气候) is mostly dry and desert-like. Such an environment made it very difficult for
the ancient Chinese to travel to the West. The Hexi Corridor was an important part of those people’s journey and
made their journey less difficult because it connected oases, which are green areas with water and plants, along the
way. These oases provided rest, food, and water for people and animals. Because of this, the corridor became a
lifeline for trade and cultural exchange. To this day, it remains important.
Since ancient times, the Qilian Mountains have been the most important water source in the Hexi Corridor.
There are more than 3,000 glaciers (冰川). The glaciers provide water for people in the Hexi Corridor. However,
because of the rising temperature, these glaciers are fast shrinking. This means less water for farming and daily life
in the area. The glaciers’ change has a big influence on the development of the area.
At the same time, the Qilian Mountains are home to many plants and animals. But due to human activities, the
environment there was once in a bad situation, and the number of plants and animals dropped a lot.
In order to protect the environment in the Qilian Mountains, the government passed a plan to build the Qilian
Mountain National Park in 2017. The government closed harmful mines (矿), planted trees, and used technology to
monitor the environment. After years of hard work by local people, researchers, and the government, the
environment has greatly improved and the number of wild animals has grown.

Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearing-impaired (听力受损 ) children for 33 years. Her first experience

April 23 is known as World Book Day. The idea of setting a day to encourage reading was proposed (提出) by
