Unit 8 Protecting the environment
1 Look at the pictures of the same place and answer the questions.
A What’s the difference between the two pictures
The difference between the two pictures is that one picture shows a place with no plants or trees , and the other picture shows the same place with many trees and plants growing.
B What do you think led to the difference
I think the difference occurred because people might have planted trees and taken care of the land.
2 Read the passage and complete the timeline.
Saihanba, located in the far-northern part of Hebei Province, became a green miracle.
Around the late 1950s, you could hardly see a tree or a flower anywhere in Saihanba. In 1962, the local government decided to change this dead land into a forest. To carry out the task, the government organised a group of 369 foresters, mostly in their 20s.

动词不定式表目的
"At the very beginning, I did not realise that the working conditions would be so harsh and the weather so bad,” said Zhao Zhenyu, one of the firstgeneration foresters. But they never gave up. The foresters carried on, overcoming the challenges of the land. They used science and technology to help trees to survive harsh conditions. The Saihanba people worked hard with their hearts and minds for more than half a century.
