For instance, discussing issues over a family dinner creates a relaxed atmosphere. Only through sincere efforts can we bridge the generation gap.

Morgan, for the first time in years, felt the warmth of a family, his heart gradually healing as he enjoyed the simple yet joyful moment.
The experience changed Morgan for good. He decided to start a new chapter in his life. At first, he regularly visited Greta’s family, offering to do whatever he could to help the family. With Greta’s help, he found a job to support himself. Then to put forward the kindness, he volunteered to get contact with the homeless and helped them as Greta had done for him. The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each.
Requirements for completion:
One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings
At least three pair-teacher meetings
One five-minute final video
Sign up!
The sign-up and registration process is as follows:
Students sign up and indicate the languages they can share and languages they are interested in learning.
Based on the information entered by each student, potential pairs are identified.
Proficiency (熟练) levels are confirmed through coursework or placement tests.
Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special permission number to register for the programme.
Reminders:
Signing up for the programme does not automatically mean that you will be able to register and participate. Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels. Since there are many factors involved in the pairing process, not all students who sign up will be matched with a partner and be able to register for the programme.

As students draw near the midterm season, so do their feelings of anxiety and stress. With deadlines approaching, it’s easy to become wrapped up in essays and exams, but Arthur Lyhne-Gold, a student at the University of Edinburgh, found the poems may be the means to calm that stress.
His idea blossomed from the concept of “the Poetry Pharmacy (药房)”, which was a shop that, instead of offering pills or prescriptions, gave customers books of poetry to solve their own problems. Calm, comfort, inspiration: whatever they were searching for, there was always a poem to help them find it.
Arthur brought this concept to campus, handing out 400 free poems with various themes to brighten the day of students. Students could always find him giving out poems outside the Main Library, especially when the midterms and Edinburgh winters got them down.
His project was rooted in personal struggles. During a study abroad year in Canada, he battled loneliness and seasonal depression. Arthur said, “I tried medical recommendations like light therapy but they weren’t as helpful. Instead, I found so much comfort in some songs, some literature, and some poetry.” He then began to hang posters around campus with poems relating to the theme of seasonal depression and decided to expand on the idea of “the Poetry Pharmacy” ,when he came back to the University of Edinburgh.
While many dismiss studies in arts as less useful as those in science, Arthur argues for the unique value of arts and poems. He explains that, “there is a tendency in Western medicine to compartmentalise things: You have a cardiologist (心脏病医生), a dentist, but never someone looking comprehensively.” On the contrary, as he claims, arts can arrange all the things and words to bring peace to people and cure their body as a whole. “In a way, poetry is medicine.”
24.Who was “the Poetry Pharmacy” originally intended for
A.Book lovers searching for themed poems.
B.Students anxious about essays and exams.
C.People struggling with personal problems.
D.Patients seeking free medical consultations.
25.What motivated Arthur to start his project
A.His emotional issues in Canada. B.His academic struggles in Edinburgh.
C.His doctor’s medical recommendation. D.His experience in the Poetry Pharmacy.
26.What does the underlined word “compartmentalise” in paragraph 5 mean
A.Prioritize. B.Integrate. C.Simplify. D.Divide.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.The development of the Poetry Pharmacy.
B.A medical treatment for seasonal depression.
C.A student’s poetry initiative to ease peers’ stress.
D.The combination of arts and science in mental health.

France banned smartphones in primary and secondary schools in 2018 to improve focus, reduce social media exposure, and control cyberbullying. Following this, the Netherlands and Hungary introduced similar bans in 2024, while the UK debates comparable legislation. The critical debate centers on whether such bans meaningfully enhance students’ mental health.
The urgency is undeniable. A 2021 U.S. Surgeon General report documented a 40% surge in persistent hopelessness among American high schoolers between 2009 and 2019. The number who seriously considered killing themselves went up by 36%. What makes these findings all the worse is that 48% of mental-health problems (like depression and anxiety) that emerge during adolescence will plague people for the rest of their lives.
It is tempting to connect these trends with the increased availability of smartphones, but establishing a causal connection is difficult. The brain undergoes profound changes during adolescence, meaning that any research on the effects of smartphone use needs to consider the developmental age of the children being studied as well as their precise smartphone habits.
Some studies reveal that unfettered (不受限制的) access to social media on smartphones at critical moments when the brain is changing may cause problems. Amy Orben at the University of Cambridge surveyed 17,409 people aged 10-21, analyzing the relationship between social media use and life satisfaction. The findings show that girls who increased their social media use over the course of a year were significantly less satisfied if the increase took place when they were between 11 and 13. Boys showed the same trend when increases took place when they were 14 or 15 years old.
How much of this will change by banning phones in schools is unclear. Victoria Goodyear at Britain’s University of Birmingham compared the mental well-being of students in schools that implemented restrictive smartphone policies with those with relaxed policies. She also monitored overall screentime. Her results show that, while those who spent more time on a smartphone overall did have a decline in mental well-being, there was no difference between the two groups. She and her colleagues argue that setting up policies at schools alone is simply not enough.
28.How is the second paragraph mainly developed
A.By analyzing causes. B.By listing data. C.By following time order. D.By examining differences.
29.What does the underlined word “plague” most likely mean
A.Improve. B.Affect. C.Cure. D.Ignore.
30.What can we infer from Orben’s research
A.Smartphones cause great harm to teenagers’ brain.
B.Ages make a difference to teenagers’ understanding of life.
C.Girls are more likely to be affected by social media than boys.
D.Unrestricted social media use leads to a decline in life satisfaction.
31.What is Goodyear’s attitude to banning smartphones in schools
A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Skeptical. D.Critical.

At a summit in Paris in February, 2025, tech bosses issued the grandest claims about artificial intelligence. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said it would lead to the “largest change to the global labor market in human history”. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVidia, envisioned a future where workers “are all going to be CEOs of AI agents”.
Such predictions draw on an established thought. As large language models gained popularity in the early 2020s, economists and bosses were hopeful that AI would help promote equality, benefiting lower-skilled workers most.
Despite such optimism about AI as an equalizer in labor market, more recent findings have cast doubt on this vision. They instead suggest a future where high-flyers fly still higher, and the rest are left behind. Rather than narrowing gaps, AI is likely to widen workforce divides in the long term. For example, for air-traffic controllers, AI processes flight data while leaving decisions to humans, thus keeping salaries high. By contrast, self-check-out systems simplify cashiers’ (收银员) roles, automating tasks like calculating change, which lowers the skill requirements, causing wages to decline.
Apart from its replacement of routine jobs, AI may extend its reach to creative work. At A&O Shearman, a law firm, AI can analyze contracts and suggest revisions within 30 seconds, handling much of the work once done by associate lawyers. In contrast, top performers have been best at using technology to make strategic decisions. Therefore, it is junior staff who are the most at risk.
Labor markets have always been defined by the destruction of old roles and the creation of new ones. In the Industrial Revolution, engineers mastering machinery saw their wages skyrocket while laborers lost out. The Computer Age then rewarded software engineers and outdated typists. AI appears to follow a similar path, benefiting those with judgment and expertise to handle complex, information-rich environments.
Today’s AI are just the beginning. As it grows more complicated, workplaces might be transformed, making every worker a CEO of sorts, as Jensen Huang has predicted. But there will be no equalizing: the most talented will still make the best CEOs.
32.What is the tech bosses’ attitude towards the future of AI
A.Doubtful. B.Ambitious. C.Pessimistic. D.Unconcerned.
33.What can we infer about the long-term impact of AI
A.AI will slow the global economic growth. B.AI will narrow the gap of wage inequality.
C.AI will disadvantage lower-skilled workers. D.AI will enhance creative work opportunities.
34.Why does the author mention labor market changes in paragraph 5
A.To recommend stable jobs. B.To stress advanced technology.
C.To picture an uncertain future. D.To illustrate an irresistible trend.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.What Defines the Future Labor Markets B.When AI Surpasses Human Intelligence
C.How AI will Divide the Best from the Rest D.Where Humans Still Have an Edge over AI

C.Minimalism encourages an organized, busy life.

Greta, a mother of four loving children aged between four and eight, led a busy life balancing her part-time teaching job and managing household affairs while her husband Mason, an engineer, was at work. Although not rich, the family did love reaching out to those in need whenever such a chance appeared.
One morning, as Greta stood in the parking lot of Happinezz Mart, holding the must-buy shopping list in her hand and mentally calculating how to stretch the family budget for another week, she noticed a homeless man. The man was holding a sign that read “HELP”. His eyes were fixed on the fresh bread and fruit displayed in the grocery store window, ignoring the people around him. He wore a weathered jacket that hung loosely on his thin body, and his gray hair stuck out from under a worn cap. His clean but rough hands suggested a life of hard work.
Remembering her teachings to her children to help those in need, Greta approached the man. “Excuse me, sir,” she said. “Are you hungry Would you like something to eat ”
“More than you can imagine, young lady! I haven’t eaten since yesterday morning,” he replied weakly.
Feeling heartbroken for the poor man’s sufferings, Greta offered to buy him some groceries. During the shopping trip, the poor man only reached for the cheapest items, often pulling his hand back as if afraid of asking for too much. Greta tried to encourage him to choose more, and as they walked between the shelves, she shared stories about her family, describing how harmonious and friendly her family was. Deeply touched by her kindness and love of her family, the man explained his situation to Greta. His name was Morgan and he used to be a soldier. Having served overseas for 24 years and witnessed so many deaths during the war, he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (创伤后应激障碍) and had to retire. He returned to his hometown but shortly afterwards, he lost his beloved wife and daughter in a car accident. This huge pain broke the man down completely. He felt so depressed and hopeless that he ended up in the street as a way to escape from the bad memories. Greta couldn’t help but feel a deep connection with Morgan. She decided to take a step further.

The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages
they wish to share and learn each week. Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the
language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term
with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will
receive one credit each.
Requirements for completion:
One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings
At least three pair-teacher meetings
One five-minute final video Sign
up!
The sign-up and registration process is as follows:
Students sign up and indicate the languages they can share and languages they are interested in learning.
Based on the information entered by each student, potential pairs are identified.
Proficiency (熟练) levels are confirmed through coursework or placement tests.
Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special
permission number to register for the programme.
Reminders:
Signing up for the programme does not automatically mean that you will be able to register and participate.
Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels. Since there are many factors involved in the
pairing process, not all students who sign up will be matched with a partner and be able to register for the
programme.

As students draw near the midterm season, so do their feelings of anxiety and stress. With deadlines
approaching, it’s easy to become wrapped up in essays and exams, but Arthur Lyhne-Gold, a student at the
University of Edinburgh, found the poems may be the means to calm that stress.
His idea blossomed from the concept of “the Poetry Pharmacy (药房)”, which was a shop that, instead of
offering pills or prescriptions, gave customers books of poetry to solve their own problems. Calm, comfort,
inspiration: whatever they were searching for, there was always a poem to help them find it.
Arthur brought this concept to campus, handing out 400 free poems with various themes to brighten the day
of students. Students could always find him giving out poems outside the Main Library, especially when the
midterms and Edinburgh winters got them down.
His project was rooted in personal struggles. During a study abroad year in Canada, he battled loneliness and
seasonal depression. Arthur said, “I tried medical recommendations like light therapy but they weren’t as helpful.
Instead, I found so much comfort in some songs, some literature, and some poetry.” He then began to hang posters
around campus with poems relating to the theme of seasonal depression and decided to expand on the idea of “the
Poetry Pharmacy” ,when he came back to the University of Edinburgh.
While many dismiss studies in arts as less useful as those in science, Arthur argues for the unique value of
arts and poems. He explains that, “there is a tendency in Western medicine to compartmentalise things: You have
a cardiologist (心脏病医生), a dentist, but never someone looking comprehensively.” On the contrary, as he
claims, arts can arrange all the things and words to bring peace to people and cure their body as a whole. “In a
way, poetry is medicine.”
C.A student’s poetry initiative to ease peers’stress.
D.The combination of arts and science in mental health.

France banned smartphones in primary and secondary schools in 2018 to improve focus, reduce social media
exposure, and control cyberbullying. Following this, the Netherlands and Hungary introduced similar bans in
2024, while the UK debates comparable legislation. The critical debate centers on whether such bans meaningfully
enhance students’mental health.
The urgency is undeniable. A 2021 U.S. Surgeon General report documented a 40% surge in persistent
hopelessness among American high schoolers between 2009 and 2019. The number who seriously considered
killing themselves went up by 36%. What makes these findings all the worse is that 48% of mental-health
problems (like depression and anxiety) that emerge during adolescence will plague people for the rest of their
lives.
It is tempting to connect these trends with the increased availability of smartphones, but establishing a causal
connection is difficult. The brain undergoes profound changes during adolescence, meaning that any research on
the effects of smartphone use needs to consider the developmental age of the children being studied as well as
their precise smartphone habits.
Some studies reveal that unfettered (不受限制的) access to social media on smartphones at critical moments
when the brain is changing may cause problems. Amy Orben at the University of Cambridge surveyed 17,409
people aged 10-21, analyzing the relationship between social media use and life satisfaction. The findings show
that girls who increased their social media use over the course of a year were significantly less satisfied if the
increase took place when they were between 11 and 13. Boys showed the same trend when increases took place
when they were 14 or 15 years old.
How much of this will change by banning phones in schools is unclear. Victoria Goodyear at Britain’s
University of Birmingham compared the mental well-being of students in schools that implemented restrictive
smartphone policies with those with relaxed policies. She also monitored overall screentime. Her results show
that, while those who spent more time on a smartphone overall did have a decline in mental well-being, there was
no difference between the two groups. She and her colleagues argue that setting up policies at schools alone is
simply not enough.
28.How is the second paragraph mainly developed
A.By analyzing causes. B.By listing data. C.By following time order. D.By examining differences.
29.What does the underlined word “plague” most likely mean
A.Improve. B.Affect. C.Cure. D.Ignore.
30.What can we infer from Orben’s research
A.Smartphones cause great harm to teenagers’ brain.
B.Ages make a difference to teenagers’ understanding of life.
C.Girls are more likely to be affected by social media than boys.
D.Unrestricted social media use leads to a decline in life satisfaction.
31.What is Goodyear’s attitude to banning smartphones in schools
A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Skeptical. D.Critical.

At a summit in Paris in February, 2025, tech bosses issued the grandest claims about artificial intelligence.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said it would lead to the “largest change to the global labor market in human
history”. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVidia, envisioned a future where workers “are all going to be CEOs of AI
agents”.
Such predictions draw on an established thought. As large language models gained popularity in the early
2020s, economists and bosses were hopeful that AI would help promote equality, benefiting lower-skilled workers
most.
Despite such optimism about AI as an equalizer in labor market, more recent findings have cast doubt on
this vision. They instead suggest a future where high-flyers fly still higher, and the rest are left behind. Rather
than narrowing gaps, AI is likely to widen workforce divides in the long term. For example, for air-traffic
controllers, AI processes flight data while leaving decisions to humans, thus keeping salaries high. By contrast,
self-check-out systems simplify cashiers’ ( 收银员 ) roles, automating tasks like calculating change, which lowers
the skill requirements, causing wages to decline.
Apart from its replacement of routine jobs, AI may extend its reach to creative work. At A&O Shearman,
a law firm, AI can analyze contracts and suggest revisions within 30 seconds, handling much of the work once
done by associate lawyers. In contrast, top performers have been best at using technology to make strategic
decisions. Therefore, it is junior staff who are the most at risk.
Labor markets have always been defined by the destruction of old roles and the creation of new ones. In the
Industrial Revolution, engineers mastering machinery saw their wages skyrocket while laborers lost out. The
Computer Age then rewarded software engineers and outdated typists. AI appears to follow a similar path,
benefiting those with judgment and expertise to handle complex, information-rich environments.
Today’s AI are just the beginning. As it grows more complicated, workplaces might be transformed, making
every worker a CEO of sorts, as Jensen Huang has predicted. But there will be no equalizing: the most talented
will still make the best CEOs.

In a world of constant consumption and information overload, the appeal of minimalism has never been
stronger. 36 This guide will walk you through several practical steps to accept a minimalist lifestyle, helping you

items that serve multiple purposes and can stand the test of time. Before your next purchase, ask yourself: Is this
item high-quality Will it serve multiple purposes Will it last a long time 40 You’ll often find at the end of your
30 days, you simply don’t want that item anymore because the urge has passed.
A.Will it make my life more complicated
