Types of sentences (句子类型)

In terms of communicative purpose, sentences can be categorized into four types:
Statements /declarative sentence (陈述句)
Questions /interrogative ~ (疑问句)
Exclamations (感叹句)
Commands /imperative ~ (祈使句)
Tag questions, also called question tags, are short questions added at the end of statements. A tag question mostly used in informal spoken English and turns the statement into a question.
What is tag questions

Why do we use tag questions

How do we understand the
speaker's intent in tag questions

2. Basic rules (基本规则)
A tag question is formed by a verb + subject
The subject in the tag matches the subject in the statement.
The verb in the tag matches the verb in the statement.
If the main verb is be, use be in the tag and if the main verb has a modal, use the modal in the tag.

when “have” used as “possess”,we use have or do (AmE);
In other meanings, we use “do”;

含有seldom, hardly, never, rarely, few, nothing等否定词或半否定词,反意疑问句用肯定式。
若含有带否定前缀的词,反意疑问句仍与前面的动词一致。
3) Some Special Patterns

principle of proximity (就近原则)
a. mostly, agrees with main clause
He is not the man who gave us a talk, is he

c. If the main clause includes ‘I think/ believe/ suppose/ expect, imagine …+ that’, tag question matches with clause and the negation transfers.
