We live in a switched-on world in which it’s almost unthinkable to be without social media for so much as a day. The colorful images, interesting videos, bite-sized info, easy-to-read stories, viewing other people’s lives... all is designed to keep us addicted.__36__ An increasing number of studies indicate that social media can have a negative impact on our relationships IRL (that’s “in real life” for non-techies). The good news is that you don’t have to go backwards to avoid the dangers of social media.__37__
Set time limits
Try the Pomodoro Technique.__38__Using this method, you break your workday into 25-minute periods separated by five-minute breaks. Use an ordinary kitchen timer (to get away from using your phone) to set limits and schedule an activity to do afterwards. Then when the timer rings, step away from your device and turn off those notifications.
__39__
The infinite scroll (无限滚动), as it’s termed by developers, is specifically designed to keep you aimlessly looking at news feeds, passively taking in everything you see. Before you go online, decide what you’re going for and stick to it. In this focused way you can go straight to what you want to see without mindlessly scrolling for things that don’t support your intentions.
Avoid comparison
__ 40__This famous saying has never been truer than when we see other people's seemingly “perfect lives" online. It can leave us feeling that we’re simply not good enough. Although comparing ourselves to others is normal human behavior, remember that people’s social media pages are not a true reflection of their real life.
A. Stay focused.
B. Scroll freely.
C. Comparison is the thief of joy.
D. However, there is a darker aspect.
E. No man is happy but by comparison.
F. This time-management strategy breaks your time up into periods.
G. Instead, you can free yourself from dependence but still enjoy the positive side.

T8联考
“Hobbies are more than just a fun way to kill the time. A widespread and harmful misunderstanding is that engaging in hobbies mirrors a lack of self-discipline. 36 In fact, hobbies can provide essential balance in our lives and enhance overall well-being. The benefits you obtain will depend on your hobby—taking up jogging, for instance, will benefit your cardiovascular health more than, say, crossword puzzles, which may improve your cognitive health. The point is that nearly all hobbies can provide measurable positive health benefits.”
“If we regularly spend time on hobbies, we usually enjoy a higher level of fitness. 37 A 2023 comprehensive analysis of multiple studies found strong evidence that engaging in leisure activities can improve health by protecting against heart disease and age-related physical decline. The report, published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry, found that for people who were suffering from a chronic illness, doing a hobby helped them manage their symptoms and even slowed the progression of their illness. But another of the researchers’ findings is perhaps the most striking: the strong relationship between doing leisure activities and increased longevity. 38 It found that older adults have a 19% lower risk of disease-related death when they engage in regular leisure activities.
39 They are vital to sustaining our mental health. People who made a conscious effort each day to spend time doing hobbies (no matter what they were) showed an average boost of 8% in well-being and a 10% drop in stress and anxiety, according to a 2023 study published in the Journal of Personality. “On a fundamental level, humans need meaning, something that gives them a sense of purpose. 40 ” says Dr. Hafeez, who has led several massive studies on hobbies. ‘Engaging in what you enjoy greatly enhances your well-being.’ With all these visible benefits of hobbies, why not just make time for activities that bring you joy and fulfillment every day ”
A. The science backs this up.
B. Hobbies make us happier.
C. You gain a lot from hobbies.
D. Nothing could be further from the truth.
E. The more you engage in hobbies, the longer you will live.
F. A different study conducted last year confirmed the impact.
G. And being able to pursue your passion really contributes to that.

Review
①I hated writing growing up. But I couldn’t avoid it: learning English was a must in high school. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganized thoughts into fluent sentences. I tried my best but my teachers would return my papers littered with red. I was frustrated to no end. 36 And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
②37 I liked it that objective truth could be found if I searched properly. In college, I joined a research lab to enhance conductor efficiency, and after a year of hard work, we developed a design that halved energy losses. However, the joy was short-lived as I had to write a research paper about our findings.
③I knew that if I wanted to become an academic, I would need to spend time penning papers. But with my awful track record with writing, I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when. I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks.38
④Before I could give up in defeat, though, the graduate student explained those red marks didn’t mean I was a bad writer. 39 It requires revising your work, often several times. I kept improving the outline of my paper, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. I had buried a few key takeaways, and the introduction was missing important context. But with help, I finally made it.
⑤From then on, writing became one of my favorite parts of research. 40 But I came around. All it took was some trial and error.
