Have you ever wondered why birds sing Birds sing for many reasons, but the most important one is to communicate with other birds.
Male birds often sing to attract females. For example, the nightingale sings beautiful songs to find a partner. The song of the nightingale is so famous that it has been written about in many poems and stories.
Birds also sing to warn other birds to stay away from their territory (领地). The robin is a good example. It sings loudly to tell other robins, "This is my area—keep out!"
Some birds sing to help them find food. The woodpecker taps on trees to find insects. Its tap-tap-tap can be heard from far away, and it helps the woodpecker locate where the insects are.
Interestingly, birds can also sing to express their feelings. When a bird is happy, it may sing a happy song. When it is afraid, it may give a short, sharp call.
Scientists have found that birds learn to sing just like humans learn to talk. Baby birds listen to the songs of adult birds and practice until they can sing correctly. Some birds can even learn to sing songs from other species (物种). The lyrebird, for example, can copy the sounds of other birds and even human-made sounds like car alarms!

In 2024, a new kind of plastic was invented that can break down (分解) in seawater. This is great news for our oceans, which are filled with millions of tons of plastic waste.
The new plastic is called "Marine-D", and it is made from plant materials. Unlike traditional plastic, Marine-D breaks down naturally in seawater within three to five years. Traditional plastic can take hundreds of years to break down, and it causes serious problems for marine life.
Scientists at a British university developed Marine-D. They spent five years researching and testing different materials. "We wanted to create a plastic that would help solve the problem of ocean pollution," said Dr. Lucy Jones, one of the lead scientists.
Marine-D can be used to make many things, such as shopping bags, bottles, and packaging. It is strong and durable (耐用的), just like traditional plastic, but it is much better for the environment.
However, Marine- D is not perfect. It only breaks down in seawater, so it should not be thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场). Scientists are now working on a new version (版本) that can break down in both seawater and landfills.
Experts say that Marine-D is an important step forward, but it is not the only solution to ocean pollution. We still need to reduce the amount of plastic we use and improve recycling. "Marine-D can help, but we all need to take responsibility for protecting our oceans," said Dr. Jones.
36. What is Marine-D made from
A. Seawater. B. Plant materials. C. Traditional plastic. D. Marine life.
37. How long does Marine-D take to break down in seawater
A. 3-5 months. B. 3-5 years. C. 100 years. D. Hundreds of years.
38. What does the underlined word "it" refer to in Paragraph 2
A. Marine- D. B. Traditional plastic. C. Seawater. D. Ocean pollution.

A. It is not strong enough.
B. It can only break down in seawater.
C. It is more expensive than traditional plastic.

40. What do experts say about solving ocean pollution
A. Marine-D is the only solution.
B. We need to reduce plastic use and improve recycling.
C. Landfills should stop accepting plastic waste.
D. Scientists should focus on other environmental problems.
