Alex Scheffler is an award-winning illustrator(插图画家),best known for his work on children’s books. Here he talks about books that changed his life.
Petzi auf der Robinson-Insel by Carla Hansen, illustrated by Vilhelm Hansen
This is one of a series of books that I loved as a child growing up in Hamburg.I seem to remember getting them sometimes after unpleasant visits to the dentist! The Petzi books described the adventures of a little bear, who was fond of pancakes, and his exploration of the world together with his friends,a penguin and a seal.
I think they may have influenced my way of seeing the world as I still prefer to draw animals with clothes on now!
I Am Papa Snap and These Are My Favorite No Such Stories written and illustrated by Tomi Ungerer
When I was a teenager,I discovered cartoonists and illustrators like Edward Gorey,Sempe,Bosc and others, but most of all I loved the art of Tomi Ungerer,a French artist with strong political views—anti-war,anti-racist,anti-nationalist.Ungerer was a passionate European and spoke three languages:none of them perfect,he claimed, but then he could draw a universally understood means of expression!I think he was probably the strongest influence on my own work as an illustrator.
Cats,Dogs,Men,Women,Ninnies & Clowns:The Lost Art of William Steig by Jeanne Steig
When I discovered the work of William Steig,I was already working as an illustrator. He worked as a cartoonist for the New Yorker all his life and came to writing and illustrating children’s books when he was in his sixties.I love his picture books:Solomon the Rusty Nail,Sylvester and the Magic Pebble,Gorky Rises,Brave Irene — more dressed animals!
This book, however,is slightly different as it was published after his death and contains about 400 unpublished drawings.I was very happy when I discovered it in a second-hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road.
21.Which book brought comfort to Alex Scheffler in his childhood

A.Petzi auf der Robinson-Insel. B.I Am Papa Snap.

C.Edward Gorey. D.Jeanne Steig.
23.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text

When Millet was a boy he worked on his father’s farm.At the rest hour in the fields the other workers would all take naps, but young Millet would spend time drawing. Finally, the village where he lived gave him a little money to Paris to study art.
When Millet reached Paris,he had a tough time.Fortunately, when he was starving, someone bought one of his peasant paintings, which enabled his family to leave for Barbizon.
Millet’s pictures of peasants at work were painted in a unique way.The painter would go out on the farms and watch them carefully—digging, hoeing, spreading manure, sawing wood,or sowing grain. Then he would come home and paint what he had seen.So astonishingly accurate was his memory that he could paint at home without models and get all the movements of his figures right. When he did need a figure to go by,he would ask his wife to pose for him.
One of his noted artworks is called “The Sower”,which shows a man seeding. He reaches into his bag for seed and then swings backward to scatter the seed, and with each swing of his hand the sower strides forward. In Millet’s picture the sower has been working hard, but his swinging step and arm still move smoothly, like a machine.Only the man’s head reveals his great tiredness.
Another masterpiece is called “The Gleaners”.A gleaner is someone picking up the leftover in the field after the wheat harvest. When farmers near Barbizon are extremely badly-off,even the little the gleaners can find is a help. You can see from Millet’s picture what back-breaking work gleaning must be.

Pablo Picasso was an outstanding painter who experimented with color and shape.Picasso wanted to find ways to paint emotions. His paintings opened people’s minds and showed there were many ways to express ideas.
Born in Spain in 1881,Picasso learned to paint at an early age because his father was a painter. At fourteen,Picasso began attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona.Although Picasso did well, his teachers wouldn’t let him develop his own style. So he changed schools.Though his new teachers praised his brushwork, they still criticized it as being too different.Picasso made up his mind to express himself in his own way.
Disappointed with his career in Spain,nineteen-year-old Picasso moved to Paris, where he learned about abstract art.He started copying famous paintings so he could paint in any style. However,an important development in his own style came along when his best friend committed suicide.Picasso was so upset that he painted only in blue and gray.He painted the poor and the disabled. This is known as his “Blue Period”.
In 1904,his painting style changed again when he fell in love with an artist’s model. He began painting everything with colors of rose, red and pink.He mostly painted artists during this time, which is called his “Rose Period”.
Picasso’s style went through another change as he began to learn about African art and geometry(几何).Instead of painting with different colors,he employed different shapes. His paintings made people surprised because they looked as if they had been broken and put back together incorrectly.Everything was geometric and abstract.Picasso’s new style became known as “Cubism”.Cubism was so unique that it became very popular.

A work of art created by artificial intelligence(AI)has been sold by a major art seller for the first time. The print sold for an unexpectedly large amount of $432,500.The artwork was bought during an auction(拍卖) Thursday at Christie’s,an art auction house,in New York City.Officials had predicted it would sell for between $7,000 and $10,000.
In a website post,Christie’s said the AI-created work was the first ever sold by a major auction house. It praised the sale as a signal of “the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage”.
The artwork, called “Portrait(画像) of Edmond Belamy”,was made by a machine learning the algorithm(算法).The AI system was created by members of an art group called Obvious in Paris,France. It shows the portrait of a man, looking similar to subjects shown in historical paintings.Christie’s described some differences of the AI-created work compared to other art it had sold. For example,it said some parts of the face were not as clearly drawn as those painted by artists. Also, some parts of the print were left empty. However,Christie’s sale organizer Richard Lloyd said the piece was very similar to many others sold over many years.
Three creators from the art group Obvious cooperated in the process of making the print.First, they put a collection of 15,000 portraits into a machine learning system. The portraits were painted by artists from the time period between the 14th and 20th centuries. Then a tool called the “Generator” made a new image based on the information entered into the system. After that, another tool, called the “Discriminator”,attempted to find differences between the human-made image and the one created by the Generator. Then the image was improved.“The aim is to fool the Discriminator into thinking that the new images are real-life portraits. Then we have a result,” Hugo Caselles-Dupré,a member of the Obvious group, said in a statement.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I found that Minnie had been unhappy ever since her family moved away from Hartford, but I was never quite sure how to approach her about it.
From the time she was a child, she was abnormally quiet;she would rarely speak unless she was spoken to,and even then her response would be very little.Despite her soft-spoken nature, she showed a great interest in art—particularly painting.Whatever she lacked in words, she made up with the paintbrush, and so it was through her paintings that I first noticed something was wrong. When she painted an animal,it would be the pigeons(鸽子)flying in Hartford Park;or,when she painted a person,it would be the partner she played badminton with at the Hartford playground.Whether intentionally or not,she showed in her paintings what she hesitated to put into words.
Being her elder cousin,I was eager to make her move to the big city as smooth as possible.Hartford was a small country town,so Minnie had grown up alongside familiar faces who were used to her timidity(羞怯).But in the city everyone was a stranger, which made it a challenge for her to communicate with others.
This problem was more obvious with her changing schools. What’s more, she was under some pressure to improve her grades.Although she was a good student, her mother was very demanding of her.She always wanted Minnie to seize all the opportunities to be the best, but it was really difficult for Minnie.
On Fridays when my high school finishes early,I usually head over to the middle school to walk Minnie home.It being such a Friday,I approached the school gate expecting to find her waiting for me as usual, but she wasn’t there.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在相应位置作答。
The security guard said he had seen Minnie leave alone already.

W:She really turns me off.
M:What happened
W:She’s always making loud noises at midnight and when I remind her,she always makes rude remarks.
M:Why don’t you have a heart-to-heart chat with her
W:I tried,but it didn’t work.
M:But how many times did you try
W:At least three times.I guess I’m going to complain to the manager.I hope she can be fired.
(Text 7)

W:Of course not.I got it with my student credit card.
M:A student credit card How in the world did you get one of these
W:I got an application in the mail.Times are changing, and having a credit card helps you build a credit rating, control spending, and even buy things that you can’t pay with cash...
M:I don’t want to hear it.It sounds you’ve spent yourself in a hole.Anyway, student credit cards just lead to impulse spending...as I can see here. And the interest rates of student credit cards are usually sky-high,and if you miss a payment, the rates, well, just jump! Let’s sit down and talk about how you’re going to pay things back, and maybe we can come up with a budget that will help you get out of this mess. That’s the least I can do.
(Text 10)
Healthy relationships allow you to express your individuality, bring out the best in both of you,and encourage growth.Especially if you are in a new relationship,it’s best to set a foundation for a positive and healthy relationship from the start. There are two pieces of advice on it.
The first one, speak up.Don’t expect your partner to be able to read your mind or “figure it out”.If you have a need or want to express something, you need to communicate it yourself. It’s not fair to you or your partner when you don’t communicate your needs.Likewise, don’t hold in the things that bother you.If you don’t know how to start a conversation, say,“There’s something on my mind and I’d like it if you listened.” You can also say,“Something is bothering me and I feel like we should talk about it.”
The second one, listen intently.Part of a healthy relationship is knowing when to talk and when to listen.Develop your listening skills by not interrupting and letting your partner finish their thoughts and feelings.Truly listen, and don’t try to come up with a response while your partner is talking.Use active listening skills by reflecting the content and emotions of what your partner is saying.

If you have any other questions, please write to me as soon as possible.

第二节
The security guard said he had seen Minnie leave alone already.Immediately I called her mother, only to find she wasn’t home.Anxious and worried,I took the usual path home, asking passers-by whether they had seen such a girl. But she was nowhere to be found.I was burning with anxiety.Standing by the roadside,I was at a loss what to do when her paintings of Hartford came to my mind.A ray of hope rose in my heart.Without hesitation,I rushed to the train station.
There she was, sitting helplessly in the waiting area of the train station.I hurried to her,but all my questions went unanswered. Then I took my notebook and drew a sad face with a question mark.Slowly, she picked it up and drew a girl and a house—her Hartford home.Seeing that,I gave her a hug, saying “It’s never easy to start a new life, but we are all here with you.” She nodded in relief.Hand in hand,we headed home.
