　　世界上不少国家都有狂欢节（Carnival），最著名的三大狂欢节有巴西里约热内卢狂欢节、意大利威尼斯狂欢节和法国尼斯狂欢节。其中要数巴西里约热内卢狂欢节（Carnival do Brasil or Rio Carnival）最具盛名。
　　狂欢节标志性的变装活动和假面舞会源于教徒使用面具和伪装戏弄嘲笑统治阶级。
　　狂欢节源于宗教，是教徒们在40天的大斋期（禁酒禁肉禁娱乐）开始之前的放纵；现在，宗教的色彩不如以往浓重。狂欢节确切日期并不固定，通常在2月至3月初举行，有的国家为期4天，有的为期数星期。节日期间通常会举办各色宴会、舞会、庆典、游行等活动。
