“The British Schindler”: the life of Nicholas Winton
It is August 1939, and a group of frightened① children are boarding② a train at Prague's Wilson Station. Their heartbroken③ parents do not join them. Indeed, they fear they may never see their children again【1】. But they know that their children will live【2】. These are among the 669 children, most of them Jewish④【3】, that Nicholas Winton will go on to save from death at the hands of the Nazis⑤【4】.

Nicholas Winton was born on 19 May 1909 in London, to GermanJewish parents. The family later took British nationality⑥. On leaving school⑦, Winton worked in banks in Germany and France. He returned to Britain in 1931, where he worked in business【5】.

During World War Ⅱ, Winton served as an officer in Britain's Royal Air Force. He left the military in 1954. He then worked for international charities and for various companies. However, the same character is pronounced differently depending on which dialect one speaks. Let's take “wo” for example,the word for “I” or “me”. In Mandarin, it is pronounced “wo”. In Wu, it is pronounced “ngu”, in Min, “gua” and in Cantonese, “ngo”. You get the idea.
A distinguishing (显著的) feature across all Chinese languages is tone. For instance, Mandarin has four tones and Cantonese has six tones. Tone, in terms of language, is the pitch (音高) in which syllables (音节) in words are pronounced. In Chinese, different words stress different pitches. Some words even have the pitch variation in one single syllable so they have different tones and pronunciation. Thus, the tone is very important in any Chinese dialect.
