Passage 2
Li Jin was born in Guangxi but raised in Sanya, Hainan. In the past 9 years, Li has made great efforts to protect the waters of Sanya. He is now spreading the knowledge of environmental protection. He does this through the Internet.
Around 2014, he began doing volunteer work to clear rubbish from the beaches and officially registered as a volunteer in May, 2017. Li took the lead in a clean-up activity on the Sanya River. In April, 2021, he used his own money to set up a volunteer service center. The center has 1,170 registered members who take part in all kinds of activities.
So far, he has spent about 3,800 hours on volunteer activities in over 550 events. More than 2,300 people have joined in the activities with his encouragement. They have drawn the attention of both adults and children to the importance of protecting oceans and beaches. His center has organized 51 beach-cleaning activities which have seen about 1,800 people join in since it was set up.
In 2021, because of Li’s growing influence in environmental protection circles, the city government invited him to make a number of short videos. In the videos, he used simple words to explain how to protect the environment. Several of the videos have been watched millions of times.
“Although many people speak highly of my work, what I have done is not for the compliment. I just want to make a difference to environmental protection. My volunteer work would be meaningless if I was paid. It is everyone’s duty to protect environment. The work itself is of great value, so I will continue doing the environmental protection work,” he said.

①Water is one of the most useful things on Earth. It gives us life. We think water is something soft and gentle, but sometimes water is so powerful that it can even be destructive (破坏性的). Here we talk about floods.
②There are two main kinds of floods: flash floods and slow floods. Flash floods are sudden floods of great volumes of water. They overflow (溢出) the banks of the rivers and wash away everything they touch into pieces. Flash floods are destructive. The other type is slow floods. They rise over a long period of time. Usually as more and more rain falls, the water in rivers rise and land floods. These slow floods happen in every country in the world.

Passage 4
A group of swans (天鹅) flew down to a beach where a crow (乌鸦) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain(蔑视).
“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All that you can do is just to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air No, that’s beyond (超出) your ability. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what the real flying is!”
One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show off (炫耀) his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.

One afternoon in a bookstore, I found a book called The Last Days of Old Beijing (《再会, 老北京》) by a US writer Michael Meyer. The name caught my eyes and made me think about my home city, Beijing, and its past.
Meye’s writing takes us back in time to Beijing about 20 years ago. In 2005 Meyer moved into a shared courtyard (庭院) home in one of Beijing’s oldest neighborhoods, Dashilan, on one of its hutong. There he taught English at a local school and became the only Westerner there living among local people.
Meyer saw some of the great changes this neighborhood went through. The old houses made way for high-rise buildings and shopping malls. However, some parts of old Beijing’s culture stayed strong in the face of rapid change. People still kept traditions like putting up Spring Festival couplets and artists worked hard to pass down skills like acrobatics (杂技) . Meyer shows us how these traditions helped people hold onto their roots as old buildings went away around them.
I was born in Beijing in the 2010s, so I know more about the city’s modern side. Reading The Last Days of Old Beijing opened my eyes to new sides of the city that I hadn’t seen before. Those small details (细节) of daily life in the old neighborhoods touched my heart.
