In July 2024, a Japanese group held an event to ask the government to give back Chinese cultural relics (文物) which were stolen during the Japanese war of aggression (侵略) against China. “I hope Japan can think about its past and change how it acts today. This is why we started this event,” Takakage Fujita, a member of the group, said to Xinhua.
The relics stolen by Japan are too many to count. In 2012, the Palace Museum published a book with a list of 15,245 cultural relics which were taken to Japan between 1895 and 1945. Many of them are now shown in museums and parks in Japan. However, some museums in Japan don’t tell the public where these relics are from.
In 2006, Chinese experts found more than 300 stone Buddha statues (佛像) from the Tang Dynasty, one of which was missing its head. When Guo Peng, who loves stone carvings (雕刻) very much, saw the headless Buddha statue at the Hebei Museum in 2013, he felt very sad. A year later, he found the missing Buddha head in Japan. Without thinking twice, he bought it from its Japanese collector and donated it to the Hebei Museum in 2015.
However, many Chinese cultural relics have not been as lucky as the Buddha head. During the Japanese war of aggression against China, Japan stole many Chinese cultural relics. Even though more than 70 years have passed since Japan lost the war, it still has not returned them. China Daily noted that the British Museum has faced a lot of pressure to return relics taken from other countries and regions, suggesting that maybe Japan should think about this too.
13.Why did the Japanese group hold an event in July 2024
A.To celebrate Chinese traditions in Japanese culture.
B.To ask the government to return stolen Chinese cultural relics.
C.To ask the government to take care of Chinese relics.
D.To support cultural exchange between China and Japan.
14.What do we know about the stolen Chinese cultural relics in Japan
A.Most of them have been returned to China since 1945.
B.The stolen relics were all taken from China’s Palace Museum.
C.Japanese museums are proud to display the history of these relics.
D.The Palace Museum listed over 15,000 relics stolen during a 50-year period.
15.Which phrase has the same meaning as the underlined word “donate”
A.keep away B.take away C.throw away D.give away
16.According to the last paragraph, what might China Daily be suggesting to Japan
A.Japan should work with the British Museum.
B.Japan should keep Chinese relics safe.
C.Japan should think about returning Chinese relics.
D.Japan should overlook public advice.

17 Peach and plum trees are used as a metaphor (比喻) for students. You may wonder why people compare students to these two kinds of trees.
In fact, it comes from an ancient story about Zizhi, an officer and educator, who lived in the state of Wei during the Spring and Autumn Period. 18 As a result, he left his state, and set up a private school and started to teach students by himself.
After setting up the school, Zizhi accepted all the students who showed great interest in study, no matter what family they came from. 19 And he often pointed at a peach and a plum tree in his garden and said, “You should work hard to become a useful person so that you can benefit society, just like when the peach and plum trees bloom and yield fruit (开花结果).”
Keeping the teacher’s words in their minds, many of Zizhi’s students went on to different countries and achieved great success. 20
Later, when Zizhi traveled around different places, he saw his students and the trees they planted. He was deeply moved. “My students are like peach and plum trees. They are everywhere, and they have achieved great success,” he said.

Water shortage is a big problem in many parts of the world. In some dry places, not having enough water makes daily life very hard. People there have trouble finding enough water and getting clean water to drink.
One good way to solve this problem is to dig wells (井) . With the help of modern technology, wells can now be dug near people’s homes. Special machines dig deep into the ground to find fresh water. After finding the water, a pump is put in. Then people can easily get water from the well. Having wells nearby is great because people don’t need to walk far to get water, and the water they get is clean and safe to drink.
Collecting rainwater is another useful way. It usually needs many people to work together to build water tanks. Some tanks are built on rooftops, and some are built at schools. These tanks collect and store rainwater. The stored rainwater can be used when there is no rain. At school, these rainwater collection systems are like good teaching tools. Students can learn how to save water and protect the environment by using them.
Reusing water also helps a lot when there is not enough water. Water used for washing clothes or taking showers doesn’t have to be thrown away. Even the water used for washing dishes, which can’t be used for drinking or cooking, can be used again. It can be used to water plants and fruit trees. This helps keep the plants alive and saves water at the same time.

At present, in different cities of China, many parents take their children to and from school every day, rain or shine. My parents did so when I was in Grade 7. The phenomenon has sparked debate among people.
Some people think it ensures the safety of children, especially in busy traffic. It also allows children to feel the care and love of their parents. Others believe it may prevent children from developing independence. Moreover, it takes up a lot of time and energy for parents.
In my opinion, parents should gradually teach children to go to school by themselves. This way, children can learn to be independent and responsible. At the same time, parents can have more time for themselves.
