Introduction
Traditional Chinese medicine is a therapy and a theory on how to stay healthy.
Diagnosis in TCM comes from various forms of observation,
including visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile and questioning.
The doctor observes a patient's tongue, voice,
inquires about the patient's habits and medical history
and feels the patient's pulse to make a diagnosis.
Therapies in TCM emphasize tactile stimulation.
Doctors give massage.
Tools for Gua Sha and cupping are easily found in daily life.
Herbal medicines are selected from natural plants
and processed to cure different diseases.
TCM ascribes to the belief that the human body has its own functioning system.
People are healthy as long as their body system remains balanced.

Traditional Chinese Medicine VS Western Medicine: Rivalry or Alliance
Q1:What are the differences between TCM and WM
Q2: According to the article, which one is better
Q1: What are the differences between TCM and WM
It is true that concepts of TCM and WM are different. TCM focuses on the patients, while WM on diseases. In the case of tumor, WM resorts to chemotherapy and resection with an effort to eliminate cancer cells, irrespective of potential side effects. Unlikely, TCM treatments emphasize on strengthening people’s immunity. By boosting the “healthy qi”, the body’s defense mechanism, TCM acts on creating a positive environment where tumor cells cannot survive and die naturally.
Q2: According to the article, which one is better
President Xi Jingping, encourages the alliance of TCM and WM in China to provide better cares to his people. Dr. Lin Hong Sheng, an oncologist of Guang’ anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, conducted an experiment for three groups of patients undergoing advanced tumor to receive TCM, WM, TCM and WM treatments respectively. Results indicate that the integrated TCM and WM treatment has the best effect.
Q2: According to the article, which one is better
(The latest data show that 4,292,000 new cancer cases occurred in 2015 in China, which is 12,000 everyday. 2,814,000 people have lost their lives to cancer, 7,700 per day and 5.2per minute, which is a shocking fact. At the terminal stage of cancer, the chance of being cured is very slim by either TCM or WM . However, experts say that 60% of the deaths could have been prevented. The best cure is to take preventative measures such as leading a harmonized lifestyle, a key TCM concept due to its endless pursuit of equilibrium. )
Q: When did TCM originate
Activity 3 Understanding
Q1: When did the formal medical system establish
Q2: Who is the “father of TCM”
Q: When did the important belief “yin and yang and five elements occur
The construction of TCM theory is dynamic.
The theory of TCM consists of
a series of beliefs.
Practitioners of TCM believe there is no separation between body and mind. They look at the interactions between mind, body and environment. The ancient beliefs include the following:
The human body is a miniature version of the larger, surrounding universe.
Harmony between two opposing yet complementary forces, called yin and yang, supports health, and disease results from an imbalance between these forces.
Five elements-metal, wood, water, fire and earth-symbolically represent all phenomena, including the stages of human life, and explain the functioning of the body and how it changes during an illness or disease.
Qi, a vital energy that flows through the body, performs multiple functions in maintaining health.
