Not even a flooded river could stand between Mary Breckinridge and the hospital her patients needed. A heavy rain ruined the banks beside Mary Breckinridge’s Wendover, Kentucky, clinic. She had to find a way to get her five patients to the hospital in Lexington.
With a neighbor’s help, Mary and the nurses built a boat. They named it Ambulance, and on the morning of December 30th, 1926, Mary, another nurse, and the patients set off down the river. After sixteen wild miles on the dangerous river, they arrived at the train station in Krypton. As she watched the train pull away with her patients safely on board, Mary smiled and waved.
Mary had not planned to be a nurse. She was the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky politician. As a child, Mary was influenced by her family who had always been concerned about the poor people of the state. When she grew up, Mary was inspired to become a nurse. So in 1925 Mary hired a few British-trained nurses and, with some money from her family, started the Frontier Nursing Service in Wendover, Kentucky.
Before Mary and her nurses came, the mountain people lived a hard life. Families made so little money that they could not afford doctors or medicine. Many children had diseases and nearly every person was malnourished for lack of food.
Mary and the nurses built clinics and a small hospital deep in the forests of Leslie County. There were no roads, electricity, or telephones. Each day the nurses rode on horseback to faraway farms, often in bad weather, to answer calls for help. They worked hard to keep an eye on their patients.
The Frontier Nursing Service grew. Today their nursing service reaches far beyond the Kentucky mountains. Medical professionals from all over the world come to Wendover to study rural health care in action. When these men and women go back to their own countries, they are prepared to help people in need.
24. How did Mary get her patients to Krypton
A. By train. B. By car.
C. By water. D. On horseback.
25. What was Mary’s parents’ attitude toward her and the nurses’ service

C. Supportive. D. Hopeful.
26. What does the underlined word “malnourished” in paragraph 4 mean
A. In poor health. B. Short of money.
C. Afraid of strangers. D. Out of luck.
27. What can we learn about Mary Breckinridge from the text
A. She trained all of the nurses herself.
B. She never had enough money for her work.
C. She remains a great influence on health care today.
D. She cured diseases in the mountains all around the world.
C
What makes a person a giver or a taker The idea of “give vs. take” takes shape in all interactions and relationships of our lives. We’re either giving advice, making time for people, or we’re on the receiving end. We keep changing between the two based on different situations on a daily basis, if not an hourly one.
According to Adam Grant, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, most people are matchers. They make careful observations on takers and make it a point for them to pay something back. They hate to see people who act so generously towards others not receive any rewards. Actually, most matchers will try hard to promote and support givers so that they can get the good they should get.
Is there a gender (性别) factor that plays a part in this
A study led by Hannah Riley Bowles, a professor at Harvard University, focused on this question. She asked 200 senior managers to sit down in pairs where one person would act as the boss and the other as a worker to discuss salary promotions. Male “workers” asked for an average salary of $146k while the females asked for only $141k. But why did they not bargain (讨价还价) as hard as the men Simply because they were more likely to be givers.
As a woman, I do enjoy the act of giving up my time, my knowledge, and my care and attention to others. I don’t expect anything in return, but I do tend to pull myself away when I feel like I’m being taken for granted (被认为理所当然). I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one’s continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed. So, it’s safe to say I’m 50% giver, 35% matcher and 15% taker.
I do know someone, however, who is 99% giver. They’re constantly giving their time, sharing valuable ideas and going out of their way for everyone who crosses their path. Although they’ve changed the lives of many people, they rarely see any of it returned. But the universe is slowly repaying them; they’re now extremely successful, well known for what they do.
28. Which can best describe the matchers
A. They hate receiving rewards.
B. They see no point in giving generously.
C. They can put up with unfair treat.
D. They want to balance giving and taking.
29. What did Hannah’s study focus on
A. The role of giving and taking in jobs.
B. The gender difference in giving and taking.
C. The role of men and women in society.
D. The salary difference between women and men.
30. What can we know about the author from paragraph 5
A. She is a complete giver.
B. She hates wasting time.
C. She takes helping others for granted.
D. She gives herself an honest assessment (评价).
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A Giving is a short path to success.
B. Sharing is a great human quality.
C. No good deed goes undone.
D. Only the selfless can be fearless.

TripAdvisor, one of the world’s most popular travel sites, has recently announced that it will stop selling tickets to attractions that contribute to the captivity (囚禁) of whales and dolphins. The ban is an addition of the company’s 2016 policy that prohibits ticket sales to attractions where travelers come into physical contact with captive wild animals.
“Whales and dolphins do not grow well in limited captive environments,” Dermot Halpin, a TripAdvisor spokesperson, said in an interview. “We believe the current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity should be the last, and we look forward to seeing this position adopted more widely throughout the travel industry.”
The ban applies to all attractions and aquariums (水族馆) that have whales and dolphins for public display. “Our aim is not only to prevent future generations of whales and dolphins from being raised in captivity but also to encourage the industry to move toward other models, like seaside reserves, that will better provide for the needs of the current captive population, ” Halpin said.
Not everyone supported the decision. SeaWorld, a top attraction in Florida, said the move ignores the needs and preferences of the general public. “TripAdvisor’s new position ignores the educational value of zoos and aquariums. TripAdvisor should give its customers good information and trust them to make well-informed decisions,” said a SeaWorld spokesman. “SeaWorld always takes good care of all animals, including whales and dolphins. We will continue to advance education and animal protection efforts.”
TripAdvisor — which serves an average of about 490 million travelers a month, according to its website — said the new policy will go into full effect by the end of the year.
32. Why does the TripAdvisor make the new announcement
A. To attract more visitors.
B. To increase ticket prices.
C. To better protect wild animals.
D. To compete with other companies.
33. What do the underlined words “this position” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Ignoring the educational value of attractions.
B. Calling on tourists to care for animals in attractions.
C. Preventing travelers having physical contact with animals.
D. Stopping selling tickets to attractions with captive animals.
34. What does TripAdvisor suggest the travel industry do
A. Take better care of all animals
B. Continue animal protection efforts.
C. Create natural reserves by the seaside.
D. Build more zoos and aquariums.
35. What is SeaWorld’s attitude toward TripAdvisor’s decision
A. Supportive. B. Positive.
C. Objective. D. Dissatisfied.

66. Dear Paul,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m really concerned to hear that you’ve been struggling with heavy study pressure lately. It must be tough, but remember you’re not alone in this.
Here are some suggestions that might help. First, try breaking down your tasks into smaller, manageable parts — this can make studying less overwhelming. Second, don’t forget to take short breaks between sessions; even a 10-minute walk or listening to music can refresh your mind. Lastly, make sure to get enough sleep and exercise — physical health greatly affects mental well-being.
I truly hope things improve for you soon. Always remember I’m here if you need to talk.
Yours,
Li Hua
