The first American President, George Washington, worked with the city planner Pierre L'Enfant to choose the land for the new presidential home. A competition was held to find a building designer.
Nine plans were considered, and the architect James Hoban won. Construction began in 1792. The first president to live there was John Adams. He and his wife Abigail moved into the White House in 1800. During the war of 1812,British troops burned most of the inside of the White House. James Hoban helped rebuild it. Over the years, each president has made changes or additions to the building.
The White House walls are made of stone that is painted white. But the famous building has had other names over time, including the President's House and the Executive Mansion. In the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt made the White House its official name.

Life in the Future
What life will be like in the future is difficult to predict. It is, however, possible to use models to make forecasts about future developments. One way to catch a glimpse of the future is to examine some of the major trends in contemporary society.
Transportation
Current trends (趋势) indicate that transportation is becoming cleaner, faster and safer. Public transportation is already well developed in most urban areas of China. New technology is being used to make sure that the cars, taxis, buses and trains we use do not pollute the air. A good example of how transportation is changing is the new maglev train, which is environmentally friendly, energy-saving and travels at an amazing speed of 430 km/h. To ensure safety, the train is controlled by an advanced computer system. Scientists are also developing new fuels and engines that will let us travel without worrying about whether we are polluting the environment.
Business
It will not be business as usual in the future. Many companies and consumers have already begun reforming the way they do business. E-commerce, or business done on the Internet is becoming more and more popular as people discover the advantages of online shopping. The Internet also makes it easier for companies to keep in touch with customers and companies in other countries. For people who do go out for shopping, shopping is no longer just a necessity. It has become a form of entertainment. Instead of searching a crowded store for basic goods, such as food and clothes, people want to go to a pleasant mall and combine shopping with fun.

Apart from speeches, in my point of view, we can use our eyes to express ourselves. And through one's eyes, we can read sorrow, happiness, encouragement, and many other emotions. Eyes are always the most direct organs to reveal our thoughts.
Until now I still remember an experience, which happened when I took part in a singing contest at the age of nine. It was the power of my mother's eyes that encouraged me to go for it. I had shown great interest in singing before that, but I was too shy to sing in public. So one day my mother took me to sign up for the singing contest. With my mother's company and encouragement, I was determined to meet that challenge. Standing on the stage, I suddenly found I had become the focus of all attention. I got so nervous that I couldn't even keep my eyes open. When it was my turn to be introduced to the audience and sing, I became even more nervous. I felt my legs were shaking and my memory seemed to have left me—I couldn't remember anything. Searching for help, I met my mother's eyes which were sparkling with encouragement and strong power. It seemed that they were speaking to me, “Take it easy. You can do it! I'll always be with you!” I read the message in her eyes and at that moment I got my confidence back and began to sing my song. When I came down from the stage, she came up to me, saying, “Great! I'm proud of you!” and gave me a big hug. At that moment. I saw her eyes filled with tears of joy. Sometimes, you see, just a look of encouragement from a loved one can make a shy person brave.

C
It's a late night in the metro area of Phoenix, Arizona. Under the streetlights, a car can be seen slowly approaching and parking. A green and blue “W” glows (发光) from the windscreen, giving off just enough light to see inside—showing a completely empty driver seat. When the person waiting for it opens the door to climb inside, a voice greets him. “Good evening, this car is yours,” it says. This is a Waymo One robotaxi, ordered just 10 minutes ago using an app.
The promise of driverless technology has long been inviting. It has the potential to improve our experience of commuting (通勤) and long journeys and take people out of high-risk working environments. It's key to helping us build the cities of the future, lowering carbon emissions (碳排放). And it could make travelling safer. “We want safer roads and less accidents. Automation could provide that,” says Camilla Fowler, head of automated transport for the UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
But in order for driverless technology to become mainstream (主流), much still needs to change.
“Driverless vehicles should be a very calm way of getting from A to B. But not every human driver around it will be driving in that way,” says David Hynd, from TRL. “It's got to be able to deal with human drivers speeding, for example, or breaking the rules of the road.”
And that's not the only challenge. “The whole insurance industry is looking into how they're going to deal with that change from a person being responsible and in charge to the vehicle doing that,” says Richard Jinks, from driverless vehicle software company Oxbotica.
The ultimate vision (终极愿景) experts are working towards is of completely driverless vehicles, not only for personal use but also for industry and wider transport networks, that can be used anywhere and everywhere around the world.
But with all these challenges in place, what exactly does the next 10 years have in store for autonomous vehicles
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了无人驾驶汽车的优势及其目前面临的挑战。

30.With what might Hynd and Jinks both agree about driverless technology?( )
A.It isn't ready for wide application.
B.It will make driving a safe experience.
C.It isn't developing as smoothly as planned.
D.It will increase profits in the insurance industry.
答案:A

D
If we continue at our current production rate, the World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Today, there is a garbage island three times the size of France floating in the Pacific Ocean. However, in her presentation last week, Alexandra Cousteau, a world-renowned environmental advocate, offered a small sign of hope.
Cousteau's talk, titled “Telling the Story of Our Water Planet: Innovation in Filmmaking and Social Media to Effect Environmental Change”, focused on using innovation and technology to create environmental solutions with a focus on restoration rather than preservation. She described our current approach to conservation as a “zero-sum game” between environmentalists and economists. An endangered species habitat can either be protected or developed; a polluted stream can either be cleaned or left to deteriorate (恶化). Both teams are on the defensive, yet playing a losing game.
In the 1970s, the environmentalist movement focused on conservation efforts. Cousteau said, “It was an effective tool then when plastics were young. But we have lost 50% of our oceanic ecosystems since 1950. Conservation is no longer enough.” Cousteau urges us to create biological richness for the creatures still living in the sea.
Throughout her speech, Cousteau discussed the challenges facing our oceans and the solutions lying at our fingertips. She explained the power of seaweed farming to sequester (隔离) carbon. She talked of 3D printing coral reefs rather than painstakingly growing. Most of all, she focused on the youths and our amazing power for driving practical change.
Cousteau said, however, there are challenges in the mission. Ocean conservation has inequalities (不平等) in its approach and implementation. Though the science exists, lawmakers need to employ these solutions efficiently and equitably, which is far easier said than done. Despite these obstacles, Cousteau's message gave hope.
Modern environmentalism is no longer the work of a few, but the work of many dedicated individuals with a common vision for change. Together, we can regain hope and rebuild our oceans.

B.Her focus on the youths' efforts is wrong.
C.She will rebuild the ocean by herself in the future.
D.She believes in the present ways to protect the ocean.
答案:A

【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了未来的食物。
56.答案:smaller
解析:考查比较级。根据下文中的“Fish size will shrink by up to 30 percent in the coming decades.”可知,此处表示“鱼将变小”,故填smaller。
57.答案:published
解析:考查动词-ed形式。设空处及“by Yale University”作后置定语修饰study,因为publish与study之间是逻辑上的动宾关系,故填published。
58.答案:to get
解析:考查动词不定式。根据语境可知,此处表示“人们将花很多钱买这种优质的水”,故填to get。“to get perfect water”在句中作目的状语。
59.答案:exactly
解析:考查副词。设空处作状语,表示“正是”,故填副词exactly。
60.答案:for
解析:考查介词。prepare sth. for sb.“为某人准备某物”。

Good afternoon,boys and girls!
I'd like to share with you my opinion about future life. With the development of science and technology, life will be greatly different in the future.
First, people will be able to do almost everything at home. They'll just need to give some simple instructions and robots will complete the tasks. Second, each family will have a flying machine. They'll be able to travel everywhere. Third, our environment will be much better than now, because some effective measures will be taken to protect it. The earth will become a big beautiful garden.
I believe people's lives will be much easier in the future.
That's all. Thank you for your listening.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I always wonder how people will react if I want a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a crowded station. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I was stuck in such a hopeless situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall (中心) buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could help me telephone my driver. She replied, still all smiles, “I'm sorry, Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife's interesting theory (理论) that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn't see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

One possible version:
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids. I thought that a beautiful woman with charming blue eyes must be willing to help me. So, with great expectation, I walked towards her with an appropriate smile on my face, and requested if she could be kind enough to make a phone call for me. However, without a word, she pulled her kids to escape from me, as if scared by a murderer. I stood there, hopeless, with a blank face and a sinking heart.
Finally a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me. I squeezed a smile and requested him the same thing. Unexpectedly, he took out his mobile phone for me without hesitation. Dancing in his eyes was the real kindness that I had been struggling to look for so long. From that day on, I began helping other strangers in trouble, just like the poor-looking but kind man, with the aim of passing kindness and melting the ice in many people's hearts.
