A
Master painter Zhang Daqian (1899—1983) was well known for having a large number of friends and students. Among them, painter Li Qiujun was special.
They got to know each other through Li's elder brother, who was one of Zhang's best friends. They admired each other's artistic talent and became confidants,_which resulted in a romantic relationship.
In 1948, Zhang produced Spring Clouds Amid Autumn Landscape, a mountain-and-water ink painting featuring gongbi (meticulous brushwork), as a gift for Li's 50th birthday.
A year later, Zhang permanently departed from the mainland, and traveled and exhibited around the world before settling down in Taipei in 1976.
After leaving the mainland, he often said that he missed Li, who died in Shanghai in 1973.
Spring Clouds Amid Autumn Landscape will be auctioned in Hong Kong on Oct. 4. The painting not only marks a friendship between the two painters, but it deserves special attention because it shows Zhang at the top of his game as he sought to master the mountain-and-water style, according to C.K. Cheung, head of Sotheby's Chinese painting department.
Sotheby's will auction (拍卖) the work at its major autumn sale, which runs from Oct. 1 to 5.
Cheung says the painting's composition and Zhang's attention to details reflect his incorporation of traditional touches, especially from Song Dynasty (960—1279 ) paintings, while also developing his own style.

I moved to the United States as a teenager. The adjustment (适应) to a new place was difficult. But there was major stress in my life at that time: I was the only member of my family who spoke English, meaning I had to step up when we dealt with a shop assistant, a waiter and so on. However, there was another universal language I loved to learn as a child: art.
Although I connected myself with drawing and painting while in school, I didn't mostly consider art as a path to a career. Since my dad always said “Think about the future”， I did not think he would support the study of art once I went to college. But, to my surprise, it was my parents who suggested just that and urged me to apply to technical and liberal arts schools.
I was admitted into industrial design. It's basically to design products and services. I could be doing something more technical or something more related to problem-solving. It was no easy task to do the course including metalworking, woodworking and modelmaking. In one class I just drew cubes for an entire month, which led me to a question: “Wow! Do I really want to do this ” But I finally survived the course. Now I am a design strategist for Marshall Moya Design, a famous architecture and interior design company. I have experience in exhibit design, product design and website design, apart from which I enjoy developing public art in my free time.
Throughout my career, I've picked up different things along the way. The best way to learn in my opinion is through working, therefore, to get as many projects as you can. Industrial design kind of makes you an all-round person.

Throughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has remained constant (持续的) to artists. No matter what objects they select, artists are to bring forth new forces and forms that cause change—to find poetry where no one has ever seen or experienced it before.
Landscape is another unchanging part of art. It can be found from ancient times through the l7th-century Dutch painters to the 19th-century romanticists and impressionists. In the 1970s Alfred Leslie, one of the new American realists, continued this practice. Leslie found out the same place where Thomas Cole, a romanticist, had produced paintings of the same scene a century and a half before. Unlike Cole who keeps on a feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in nature, Leslie paints what he actually sees.
In his paintings, there is no particular change in emotion, and he includes ordinary things like the highway in the background. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of color photography (摄影术) to help both the eye and the memory when he improves his painting back in his workroom.
Besides, all art begs the age-old question: What is real Each generation of artists has shown their understanding of reality in one form or another. The impressionists saw reality in brief emotional effects, the realists in everyday subjects and in forest scenes, and the Cro-Magnon cave people in their naturalistic drawings of the animals in the ancient forests. To sum up, understanding reality is a necessary struggle for artists of all periods.
Over thousands of years the function of the arts has remained relatively constant. Past or present, Eastern or Western, the arts are a basic part of our immediate experience. Many and different are the faces of art, and together they express the basic need and hope of human beings.
