Huashuwa village, in Luoyang, Henan Province, has transformed from a poor village deep in the mountains into a tourist destination thanks to the tireless efforts of a ceramic (陶瓷) artist.
Guo Aihe, who is a master of Chinese arts and crafts specializing in sancai, or tricolored glazed ceramic art, is the brain behind the metamorphosis.
The story comes from Guo’s passion for sancai art. When in university, Guo chose to make a sancai painting as his graduation project, which won applause from the headmaster of the university. Greatly encouraged, Guo Aihe started his now four-decade bond with the old art and created outstanding artistic works, many of which have been displayed at art institutes at home and abroad. However, he decided that personal achievements and milestones were not enough. He wanted to draw more people to this art.
In 2013, Guo chanced upon the mountain village of Huashuwa during a trip, and was amazed by its breathtaking natural beauty. But economically backward, the village had neither tap water, electricity, nor good roads. The village is only 62 kilometers from Neolithic Yangshao Site, a historic cultural site dating back over 5,000 years, which had yielded many pottery artifacts (手工艺品). It is also not far from two famous kilns (窑) during the Song Dynasty. Therefore, Guo believed the place was the birthplace of ceramic art and wanted to reshape it with this cultural feature.
And there the idea of building a ceramic art village was born. Now, the village attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually.
During the process, Guo has also worked to improve rural children’s aesthetic education by donating fine art tools to schools and organizing activities to collect money for rural fine arts education.
“I know our country has put in a lot of efforts to remove extreme poverty, but I thought how I could help the villagers to remove emotional poverty. Therefore, we started our efforts with children, focusing on their artistic education to guide them to discover, understand and pursue beauty, thereby nurturing a beautiful mind and establishing a solid foundation for life,” he says.
24. What does the underlined word “metamorphosis” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Art. B. Change. C. Passion. D. Decision.

A. It is a historic cultural site.
B. He had a pity for the poor villagers.
C. He wanted to make it a popular tourist spot.
D. It has special location and natural beauty.
26. What does Guo try to convey in the last paragraph
A. Children in the village have an eye for beauty.
B. Artistic education helps nurture a beautiful mind.
C. There are still many poor villages in our country.
D. Great progress has been made in removing poverty.
27. Which of the following can best describe Guo according to the text

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is one of the best books I have read in years. This is a page turner with complex characters and situations that will make you think hard about friendship, good and evil, betrayal and redemption (背叛和救赎). It is intense and contains some graphic scenes; however, it is not unnecessary. Its popularity shows that it is indeed a great book by many measures.
On one level, The Kite Runner is the story of two boys in Afghanistan and Afghan immigrants in America. It is a story set in a culture that has become of increasing interest to Americans since the September 11, 2001. It also explores the history of the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. On this level, it provides a good way for people to learn more about Afghan history and culture in the context of the story.
Looking at The Kite Runner as a story about culture, however, misses what the book is really about. This is a novel about humanity. This is a story about friendship, loyalty, cruelty, longing for acceptance, redemption, and survival. The core story could be set in any culture because it deals with issues that are universal.
The Kite Runner looks at how the main character, Amir, dealt with a secret in his past and how that secret shaped who he became. It tells of Amir’s childhood friendship with Hassan, his relationship with his father and growing up in a privileged place in society. I was drawn in by Amir’s voice. I sympathized with him, cheered for him and felt angry with him at different points. Similarly, I became attached to Hassan and his father. The characters became real to me, and it was difficult for me to put the book down and leave their world.
I highly recommend this book, especially for book clubs. For those of you who are not in a reading group, read it and then loan it to a friend. You are going to want to talk about it when you finish.
28. What has been attracting Americans for the last two decades
A. American background. B. Good books.
C. Graphic scenes. D. Immigrant culture.
29. What does this book truly expose in the author’s opinion
A. The power of friendship. B. The people’s humanity.
C. The history of kite-making. D. The necessity of keeping secret.
30. What can we know about the author
A. He could identify with Amir. B. He plans to establish a book club.
C. He has mixed feelings towards Hassan. D. He has a preference for Afghan history.
31. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A book review. B. A science fiction. C. A travel brochure. D. An autobiography.
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. A 31. A
D
Researchers have developed a blood test for patients with thinking and memory problems to check if they have Alzheimer’s and to see how far it has progressed. The research team says the test could help doctors decide the most suitable drugs for patients.
Writing in the journal Nature Medicine, Professor Hansson from Lund University, Sweden, and colleagues reported they found the protein eMTBR-tau243. Discovered in blood, it could build up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s, but not other diseases.
The team’s analyses, which included 902 participants, found levels of this eMTBR-tau243 rose in people with slight Alzheimer’s symptoms, and higher in those with dementia (痴呆). Levels were not raised in people with cognitive impairments (认知障碍) due to other conditions.
“These results are important and help track performance of new drugs in trials,” said Professor Tara, an expert not participating in the work. “But this test requires complex scientific methods only available in specialist laboratories, so the development of cheaper, easier tests is necessary,” she said.
Dr. Sheona Scales, the head of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said eMTBR-tau243 was one of a number of different biomarkers being studied for use in blood tests for Alzheimer’s, but it’s a breakthrough to find the blood levels of eMTBR-tau243 linked to a person’s memory and thinking abilities. “Having blood tests that do this will help to track diseases like Alzheimer’s in the brain as they progress.”
Other research has revealed the levels of two proteins, NPTX2 and tau in the brain, are associated with the degree of cognitive impairment of people with Alzheimer’s. This research, led by scientists in the US, looked at the levels of the two proteins in the brain. The team found the level of NPTX2 was better able to identify people experiencing cognitive problems than their levels of tau or amyloid-beta, and could be used to predict their future cognitive reduction. Professor Wyss-Coray, a co-author of the study from Stanford University, said the results could help identify the best treatments for individuals.
32. What can be learned about eMTBR-tau243 according to paragraph 2
A. Its application in treating dementia is speeding.
B. Its levels remain unchanged despite Alzheimer’s.
C. It builds specifically in Alzheimer patients’ brains.
D. It begins to form in the brains of sick aged people.
33. How does Professor Tara view the blood test for eMTBR-tau243
A. Its effects focus on non-Alzheimer’s conditions.
B. It’s already widely available in major care centers.
C. It’s unreliable for tracking drug effect in hospitals.
D. Its current limits hold back its immediate wide use.
34. What did the US research find about NPTX2
A. It helps amyloid-beta against Alzheimer’s.
B. It proves to be a major cause of Alzheimer’s.
C. Its levels show signs of cognitive decline.
D. Its functions can be detected without lab conditions.
35 What is a suitable title for the text
A. Blood Tests Track Cognitive Reduction for Alzheimer’s
B. Blood Tests Check Improvement of Cognitive Disorders
C. Tau Protein Is Found Unrelated to Alzheimer’s Diagnosis
D. Tau Protein Plays a Role in Age-Related Memory Loss
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. A

I Know You Can Do It
I was going way too fast down the winding road. I hit something, and my entire body jerked (急推) up and forward. My legs flew up, and my hands left the handlebars for a brief moment. For a split second, I thought I might crash. By some miracle, I stayed on the bike. I slowed down but didn’t stop. I kept pedalling.
I was a non-athletic forty-two-year-old kindergarten teacher. I had three teenage children who went to a youth group at our local church. They were doing a fundraiser to go to summer camp. Ryan, my thirteen-year-old son, approached me and said, “Mom, you should ride in our bikeathon (自行车马拉) .” As he told me the detail, saying the starting point was on a hill, I laughed out loud.
“What makes you think I could finish a twenty-mile bikeathon ” I asked.
My son looked me straight in the eyes. “I know you can do it.”
I almost laughed again, saying I was too old to take part, but my son was serious. I promised to think about it. It would take months of training and need new equipment, and my bike needed repair. I had neither the time nor the desire to do all of that.
I went to kindergarten class the next day and played a familiar counting song. The kids sang with enthusiasm. “Let’s do it again, and this time faster. I know you can do it!”
There it was again: “I know you can do it.” I was encouraged and decided to ride in the bikeathon and began preparing. When I asked for tips on how to get ready, Tom, my brother, told me to make a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich and wear it as a necklace around my neck so I would have something to eat if I got hungry. I laughed. I could imagine that funny scene: a woman with a sandwich hanging on a ribbon (丝带) around her neck was struggling on a bike. Though funny, it was a practical tip. I did as he told.

【答案】
So there I was on Bikeathon Day, riding in front of Ryan. Mile after mile I went. I began to feel a certain sense of contentment in the monotonous rhythm and the confidence that I was giving my all to this endeavor. I began to whisper to myself, “I know you can do it.” I had passed a few more bikers, and I couldn’t see anyone in front of me anymore. Maybe they had already turned the corner to go back into town. The only bike I saw was Ryan’s.
I couldn’t remember how many bikers I had passed before I arrived at the finish line. People clapped crazily. They looked at me with surprised faces. I looked around for more bikers, but I didn’t see any. I asked a helper how many other bikers had already made it back. “Nobody is back yet! You came in first! Are you sure you rode the whole way ” I assured him I did as Ryan rolled up behind me. Ryan was right. He knew I could do it, and I did. Twenty-five years later, from time to time, he still calls me his Iron Mommy.上饶市高二年级

A. Art. B. Change. C. Passion. D. Decision.
25. Why did Guo choose to transform the village of Huashuwa
A. Successful and adaptable. B. Passionate and modest.
C. Ambitious and creative. D. Talented and hard-working.
C
