When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had.
The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock, and shielding soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work.
I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I created a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities.
In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy long-legs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium (菌丝).
Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard—it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die.
24. How did the author use to improve the soil
A. By adding rich soil. B. By covering it with bags.
C. By removing the weeds. D. By applying chemical fertilizer.
25. What does the underlined word “shielding” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Exposing. B. Separating. C. Sheltering. D. Monitoring.
26. What is the purpose of paragraph 4
A. To explain the process of transplanting.
B. To illustrate the prevention of insect attacks.
C. To stress the competition of different species.
D. To state the formation of multi-species communities.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Soul of Soil B. The Vitality of the Wild
C. The Art of Gardening D. The Whisper of Flowers

As the planet warms up and oceans rise, extreme weather events are becoming the norm. Getting notified in time to prepare for a disastrous hurricane or heat wave could be the disparity between life and death. AI can help. Two studies published in the journal Nature described the benefit of two AI models that could improve weather forecasting.
The first AI-based system is called Pangu-Weather, which was developed by the Huawei Cloud team. It was capable of predicting global weather a week in advance. A majority of countries use numerical (数值)weather prediction models. These models use math formulas to create computer models of the atmosphere and oceans for predicting future weather with data from them. What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather model is deeply trained with the help of 39-year global weather data, preparing it to forecast temperature, pressure, and wind speed. When compared to the numerical weather prediction method, Pangu-Weather was 10,000 times faster and no less accurate. Pangu-Weather also contains a 3D model, unlike past AI forecasting systems, that allows it to record atmospheric states at different pressure levels to further increase its accuracy.
Pangu-Weather can predict weather patterns 5—7 days in advance. However, it can’t forecast precipitation (降水). As precipitation prediction is vital for extreme weather forecasting, a second Nature model, NowcastNet, fills this gap. It can accurately predict rainfall 6 hours ahead, helping meteorologists (气象学家)study weather patterns in real-time more effectively.
NowcastNet focuses on detailed, realistic descriptions of extreme rainfall patterns in local regions. It uses radar observations from the US and China, as well as deep learning methods, to predict precipitation rates over a 1.6-million-square-mile region of the eastern and central US up to 3 hours in advance. 62 meteorologists from China tested NowcastNet and ranked it first, out of four other leading weather forecasting methods, in reliably predicting heavy rain, which it did 71 percent of the time.
While generative AI models have good prospects in weather forecasting, experts point out that replacing existing systems has many challenges. However, in 5—10 years, these models may surprise us.
28. What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Difference. B. Decision. C. Settlement. D. Struggle.
29. What is the advantage of Pangu-Weather compared with the numerical weather prediction method
A. It can predict precipitation more accurately.
B. It can provide a 3D view of the weather.
C. It is much faster and equally accurate.
D. It can record more detailed atmospheric states.
30. What can we learn about NowcastNet from the text
A. It is mainly used to predict global weather patterns.
B. It was developed by 62 meteorologists from China.
C. It uses radar observations and deep learning to predict precipitation in the US.
D. It ranks first among all weather forecasting methods in predicting heavy rain.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The impacts of climate change on extreme weather events.
B. The challenges in using generative AI in weather forecasting.
C. The explanation of the traditional numerical weather-prediction method.
D. The introduction of two AI-based weather-forecasting models and their features.

While Ozempic causes “significant lean mass loss”, it burns calories with no apparent side effects. Scientists claim they have discovered a new drug that promotes weight loss similar to Ozempic, but without much loss of muscle.
The 47 scientists behind the study hope the new drug candidate, which is referred to as NK2R, could eventually become an option for people who haven’t had success with other weight loss treatment. “Many slimming pills can cause an unpleasant vomiting (呕吐) response. However, our drug had no such side effect,” Zach Gerhart-Hines—co-author on the study—told BBC. “Compared to Ozempic, it causes little muscle loss.”
So how does it work The research claims NK2R affects the body in two main ways: firstly, by targeting your brain and reducing appetite. Secondly, the drug increases calorie burning in the muscles and body fat. NK2R, the scientists say, acts on a different neural circuit in the brain than Ozempic. Ozempic boosts calorie burning by mimicking (模仿) a hormone called GLP-1, which reduces hunger and appetite, while NK2R drug works differently. It targets a molecule (分子) found naturally in the body’s cells, known also as NK2R. Scientists say activating NK2R through the drug can influence blood sugar and body weight. When the research team administered the drug to overweight mice, it resulted in weight loss and a decrease in food intake.
But some health experts have reservations about the impact this treatment will have on humans. “The study is currently a theory based on animals. Will it work in practice ” Dr. Adam Collins—Associate Professor of Nutrition at the University of Surrey—explained to BBC.
Researchers aim to begin clinical trials of NK2R on humans within the next two years.
32. What can be learned from paragraph 2
A. NK2R will take the place of Ozempic.
B. Ozempic usually leads patients to vomit.
C. NK2R may be popular among customers.
D. NK2R causes no muscle loss compared to Ozempic.
33. How does the author explain how NK2R functions
A. By quoting authorities. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making comparisons. D. By giving examples.
34. What is Dr. Adam Collins’s attitude towards NK2R
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Concerned. D. Indifferent.
35. Why does the author write the text
A. To advertise for NK2R. B. To introduce a new diet pill.
C. To stress the importance of health. D. To inform readers of NK2R’s function.

Socrates, the renowned ancient Greek philosopher, famously stated, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” 36 He believed true wisdom and personal growth couldn’t be achieved in an unexamined life.
The Socratic Method, named after Socrates himself, is a form of cooperative dialogue where one asks a series of open-ended questions to guide another toward insight and understanding. For example, imagine a teacher discussing moralities with students. The teacher may not explain what is “right” or “wrong”. 37 And follow up with questions like, “Why do we consider some actions fair and others unfair ” Through this questioning, students are led to think more critically and examine their own values and assumptions rather than just accepting the predetermined answers.
38 When you ask yourself, for instance, “Why do you believe this ” or “What evidence supports your thinking ”, you are encouraged to consider whether your beliefs are truly your own or influenced by external factors. This process of questioning leads to self-reflection, helping individuals better understand the underlying motivations behind their thoughts and actions.
Self-reflection is like hitting the pause button on life. 39 And it also looks closely at your own thoughts, feelings, and experiences. An unexamined life, however, is one where people go through the motions without ever questioning. Living an unexamined life is similar to coasting on automatic pilot, where one simply accepts social standards without critically evaluating them. In this kind of life, you’re swept along by society’s expectations. 40 It seems as if you’re living someone else’s script without ever writing your own.
A. It gives you a moment to step back.
B. You are barely aware of your own desires.
C. So they can follow a “right” or “fair” action.
D. You are always stuck in your own ceaseless work.
E. The Socratic Method is a powerful tool for self-examination.
F. Instead, he or she might ask “What does it mean to act morally ”
G. This powerful declaration serves as a call to dig deeper into one’s own thoughts.

Tong sui, which means “sugar water” in Cantonese, refers to Chinese sweet soups or desserts enjoyed in southern China. Overly 56 (sugar) as it may sound, tong sui is no syrup bog (沼泽) but a lightly sweetened soup celebrated 57 its nutrition—an extension of the traditional Chinese medicine belief that all food is medicinal and can help bring your body into better balance and health.
Tong sui is commonly a variety of complicated dishes 58 feature multiple ingredients as varied as papaya (木瓜) and bird’s nest (燕窝), but it is the sea coconut, in particular, that requires a mother’s love to make it to the table. First, few market stalls (摊位) sell fresh fruit, as it 59 (sour) quickly in the tropical heat, so keeping the fruit fresh has already been energy-consuming. Then, the fruit’s brown shell has to be painstakingly peeled off to reveal its glistening, milky white flesh.
60 (interesting), the sea coconut I’ve been talking about so far is not true sea coconut, and 61 every Asian restaurant menu and every canned fruit label claims is not true, either. It is actually the fruit of the toddy palm (糖棕树). The true sea coconut is 62
protected species, and its export is strictly controlled, with each fruit 63 (bear) a government-issued serial tag Once 64 (believe) to grow from a mythical (神话的) tree on the bottom of the sea, sea coconut shells were decorated with priceless gems (宝石) by European 65 (noble) in the 16th century.

When I was seven, my sister Lucy, who was four, and I were eager to be independent and earn some money to show our parents that we were capable beyond our years. The only idea I could come up with was to offer our services as gardeners, going door to door to propose weeding neighbors’ gardens for 2 dollars each.
Our proposal was fair, yet unexpectedly, only Mrs. White, living three blocks from our house, accepted the offer. Maybe that was because no one would take children’s words seriously. We agreed on the weeding at 8:00 the next morning. Having the first client, Lucy and I couldn’t contain ourselves and felt as if we had achieved a monumental task, hearts swelling with pride. We were going to be gardeners! But the excitement of the moment was fleeting, and the next day, the attraction of play and the forgetfulness of childhood overtook us. We forgot about our commitment.
Concerned about our absence, Mrs. White contacted our mother. As we walked into the kitchen through the back door at 11:00 a. m. , Mom had just hung up the phone. She asked about our little gardening business. Surprisingly, she wasn’t angry, instead, she found our initiative amusing. She explained that Mrs. White had called her, expressing disappointment over our broken promise. Faced with the mistake, we admitted our oversight and promised to make a sincere apology sometime. Instead of criticizing us, Mom busied herself with lunch preparations as if nothing had happened. We did feel a touch of guilt, but it was quickly overshadowed by what Mom said next.
As we mouthed on sandwiches, Mom casually asked, “Would you was like to go to Disneyland this afternoon ” We sprang into action, bathing and dressing, which was like getting ready for a birthday party. We rushed outside, not wanting to miss the bus that would take us downtown. The sun was high in the sky as we stood outside, our bags packed and hearts full of anticipation.

Dear classmates,
Recently, we’re flooded with lots of learning resources. While it seems like a treasure, it’s actually a double-edged sword. Too many options can be overwhelming and waste our precious time.
I think it’s crucial to choose these resources wisely. Here’s what we can do. First, identify our weak subjects and search specifically for relevant high-quality courses. Second, listen to recommendations from teachers. Third, create a study plan around the selected resources to ensure systematic learning.
Let’s make the best use of these resources and improve our study! Thank you!
On the landing, Mom said, “Girls, we are not going to Disneyland today.” Lucy’s eyes widened in disbelief. Our excitement gave way to disappointment. “But Mom, you just promised!” I exclaimed, confusion clouding my thoughts. She looked at us seriously and explained, “I didn’t keep my promise either, and now you know how it hurts. You need to learn that actions have consequences. Disneyland can await, but learning to be responsible and trustworthy can’t.” Mom’s words hit us hard, the white lie making us realize the gravity of our mistake. Instead of moving to Disneyland, we had to go back to confront our responsibilities and make things right.
We knocked gently on Mrs. White’s door, heads down and hearts heavy. When she opened it, we saw a hint of surprise in her eyes. We quickly apologized for not keeping our promise and for letting her down. Mrs. White smiled warmly and forgave us, saying that she understood how easily children could forget. Together, we worked hard to remove the weeds. Mom taught us a true lesson which would stay with us forever. It was a lesson about the importance of keeping our word and the impact our action could have on others. That day, we not only weeded Mrs. White’s garden but also planted the seeds of responsibility and integrity within ourselves.

M: Alex. What brings you to my office
W: I’d like to discuss my last lab report.
M: Sure, but I have a meeting in half an hour. I can only give you 20 minutes.
W: 15 minutes should be enough.
M: Okay. So, what specifically
W: I’m surprised by my grade. I thought my report would at least get an A, or worst case, a B+. Getting a B- is hard for me to accept.
M: I remember your report. My comment was “too expansive”, right
W: Yes, but isn’t that a good thing I consulted and cited lots of materials.
M: That’s the problem. Your report lost focus due to too much expansion, which blurred the main goal of the experiment. But you documented the experimental process in great detail, which is good, though. Just try to stick to the main theme next time.
W: I see. Sorry, Professor Smith. I hope you can forgive my presumption.
M: No, Alex, I think you deserve praise. There are many hardworking students, but few dare to come to me like you did, questioning face-to-face. Keep it up.
Text 10(175
W: Hi, I’m Kelly. Today, we’ll take a look at some strange fruits that you may have never seen in American supermarkets.
First up is salak. Native to Indonesia, the fruit is nicknamed the “snake fruit”. It’s covered by a reddish-brown scaly shell that resembles a snake’s skin. When you crack it open, you see what looks like garlic cloves that taste like crispy pineapple.
Next up is kiwano, also known as the “horned fruit”. This fruit originates from Southern Africa and looks like it’s from outer space with its orange spiky shell. Inside is lime green jelly-like flesh, with a taste compared to a mixture of banana and passion fruit.
Lastly, we have durian fruit. Named in some regions as the “king of fruits”, the durian is an important tropical fruit crop in Southeast Asia. It stands out for its large size, thorn-covered shell, and strong odor. The smell is so unpleasant to some people that it’s banned from public transportation in Singapore. Despite that, its flavor is often compared to that of cheesecake.

根据文章第一段“In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery.(以前,在那些小得多的花园里,我会用从苗圃买来的几袋优质土壤来改良土壤)”可知,作者过去是通过添加优质土壤来改善土壤的,也就是添加肥沃的土壤。故选A项。
根据划线词上文“Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock(现代农业的两个核心原则可以指导这一转变:尽量减少土壤扰动和强调生物多样性。在实践中,轮流种植作物;优先使用有机肥料而非化肥;将农作物、树木以及家畜进行整合)”和划线词后面“…soil from being washed away with cover crops (用覆盖作物来……土壤被冲走)”可知,这里说的是一些现代农业的原则及实践方法,提到用覆盖作物来防止土壤被冲走,划线词在此处应是“保护、防护”的意思,与“Sheltering”意思相近。故选C项。
26.D推理判断题。根据文章第四段“In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium.(五月的时候,我决定移栽一株开花植物。当我把这株植物挖出来时,各种各样的生物都冒了出来。蚯蚓在根部扭动着,一只长脚蜘蛛匆匆寻找藏身之处。在这株植物的下方,我甚至还看到了真菌菌丝体那细密的白色网状结构)”可知,本段描述了作者在移栽开花植物时,看到了蚯蚓、长脚蜘蛛以及真菌菌丝体等各种各样的生物出现,展现了多种生物共存的情况,目的是说明形成了多物种的群落。故选D项。

Getting notified in time to prepare for a disastrous hurricane or heat wave could be the disparity between life and death.(随着地球变暖,海平面上升,极端天气事件正成为常态。 划线词与A选项“Difference(差别)”为同义词。故选A项。
根据第二段“When compared to the numerical weather prediction method, Pangu-Weather was 10,000 times faster and no less accurate.(与数值天气预报方法相比,Pangu-Weather的速度要快1万倍,而且同样准确。)”
根据第四段“NowcastNet focuses on detailed, realistic descriptions of extreme rainfall patterns in local regions. It uses radar observations from the US and China, as well as deep learning methods, to predict precipitation rates over a 1.6-million-square-mile region of the eastern and central US up to 3 hours in advance.(NowcastNet专注于对当地极端降雨模式的详细、逼真的描述。它利用来自美国和中国的雷达观测以及深度学习方法来预测美国东部和中部160万平方公里地区的降水量,可以提前3小时进行预测。)”可知,NowcastNet利用雷达观测和深度学习来预测美国的降水量。故选C项。
31.D主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“AI can help. Two studies published in the journal Nature described the benefit of two AI models that could improve weather forecasting.(人工智能可以提供帮助。发表在《自然》杂志上的两项研究描述了两种可以改善天气预报的人工智能模型的益处。)”可知,本文主要介绍了两种基于人工智能的天气预报模型及其特点。D选项“The introduction of two AI-based weather-forecasting models and their features.(介绍两种人工智能天气预报模式及其特点。)”

根据第二段“The 47 scientists behind the study hope the new drug candidate, which is referred to as NK2R, could eventually become an option for people who haven’t had success with other weight loss treatment. “Many slimming pills can cause an unpleasant vomiting(呕吐) response. However, our drug had no such side effect,” Zach Gerhart-Hines—co-author on the study—told BBC. “Compared to Ozempic, it causes little muscle loss.”.(参与这项研究的47位科学家希望这种被称为NK2R的新药最终能成为那些在其他减肥治疗中没有成功的人的一种选择。“许多减肥药会引起不愉快的呕吐反应。然而,我们的药物没有这样的副作用”该研究的合著者扎克·格哈特-海恩斯告诉BBC。“与Ozempic相比,它几乎不会造成肌肉损失。”)”可知,NK2R没有呕吐之类的副作用且几乎不会造成肌肉损失,由此推知,它可能会受到消费者的欢迎。故选C。
33.C推理判断题。根据第三段“NK2R, the scientists say, acts on a different neural circuit in the brain than Ozempic. Ozempic boosts calorie burning by mimicking (模仿) a hormone called GLP-1, which reduces hunger and appetite, while NK2R drug works differently. It targets a molecule (分子) found naturally in the body’s cells, known also as NK2R. (科学家们说,NK2R作用于大脑中与Ozempic不同的神经回路。Ozempic通过模仿一种叫做GLP-1的激素来促进卡路里燃烧,这种激素可以减少饥饿感和食欲,而NK2R药物的作用不同。它的目标是一种天然存在于人体细胞中的分子,也被称为NK2R)”可知,作者通过对比NK2R和Ozempic的作用机制来解释NK2R的功能。故选C。
34.A推理判断题。根据文章第四段“But some health experts have reservations about the impact this treatment will have on humans. “The study is currently a theory based on animals. Will it work in practice ” Dr. Adam Collins—Associate Professor of Nutrition at the University of Surrey—explained to BBC.(但一些健康专家对该治疗对人类的影响持保留态度。“目前的研究是基于动物的理论。它在实践中会有效吗?”萨里大学营养学副教授Adam Collins博士向BBC解释道)”可知,Dr. Adam Collins对NK2R持怀疑态度。故选A。
根据第一段“Scientists claim they have discovered a new drug that promotes weight loss similar to Ozempic, but without much loss of muscle.(科学家声称,他们发现了一种类似于Ozempic的新药,可以促进减肥,但不会减少太多肌肉)”以及第二段“The 47 scientists behind the study hope the new drug candidate, which is referred to as NK2R, could eventually become an option for people who haven’t had success with other weight loss treatment.(参与这项研究的47位科学家希望这种被称为NK2R的新药最终能成为那些在其他减肥治疗中没有成功的人的一种选择)”可知,主要介绍了一种新型减肥药物NK2R的作用机制及其与现有药物Ozempic的对比。
