Sagres Birdwatching Festival
In October, birders from all over the world will attend the Sagres Birdwatching Festival, the largest birdwatching event in Portugal. You can see migratory (迁徙的) birds as well, who use Sagres as their main crossing point on their way towards Africa.
Main Activities
The guided tours are a highlight of the event. Experienced guides take participants to the best observation spots in the region, where tourists can learn more about the behavior and migration patterns of various species.
The festival also offers several workshops on topics such as bird identification, nature photography, and environmental conservation.
Celebrated biologists share their knowledge through lectures, discussing the importance of migratory routes and the challenges birds face during their journeys.
Preparation Tips
Tours and workshops fill up quickly, so it's advisable to secure your spot in advance.
To make the most of your birdwatching experience, a quality telescope and a good camera are essential.
October in Sagres can have unpredictable weather. Wear comfortable, waterproof clothing to ensure you enjoy the festival in any condition.
Entrance Fees
Entrance to the festival is free. Activities like bird counts and bird ringing, which contribute to scientific research, you can participate in freely. Peter Frank, a canoeist, planned to row a canoe (皮划艇) to complete a 6,000-mile journey along the Great Loop. He estimated it would take him a total of 17 months.
Frank launched his trip on June 27 in Escanaba, Michigan, where he's from, and now he has arrived at the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland in his 1982 Sawyer Loon canoe. He has finished about a quarter of his planned journey, so he's still got a long way to go. He says nature is his biggest competitor. He'll have to complete the Great Loop by next November, due to a natural deadline set by the freezing of the lakes
he'll need to cross.
For Frank, the journey is largely a way to express his gratitude for still being alive and having the ability to take on the physical challenge, almost a decade after a car accident which left him with 14 broken bones and nearly paralyzed (瘫痪的). Frank had made long-distance trips by bicycle, unicycle and canoe before. “These adventures are not only my college and my education, but they're my forms of
showing my gratitude to the world for being alive and being able to walk and do the things that I can do,” he says.
“Contrary to what most people think, it doesn't cost much to travel, especially when you eliminate plane tickets, gas, property and accommodations like hotels or restaurants,” he says. “Is this comfortable Absolutely not, but through the struggles of following my dream with little to nothing, I've developed the capacity to enjoy less, and as a result, I live well with little,” he adds.
He also describes the trip as a journey in self-discovery. It's very hard to picture where he will be three years from now, as he's still young and growing, but he's hoping that on this very long journey of self-discovery, he'll perhaps find that.
4.What can we know about Frank's journey ( )
A.He uses a modern canoe. B.The journey will take one year.
C.He started in June in Michigan. D.The journey has been completed.
5.Why is the journey significant to Frank ( )
A.He can break a record.
B.He can find a new home.
C.He wants to win a competition.
D.He wants to show appreciation for life.
6.What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 4 mean ( )
A.Dismiss. B.Admit. C.Remark. D.Possess.
7.What message does the author want to show in the last paragraph ( )
A.Uncertainty of the future. B.Value of personal growth.
C.The discovery of travelling. D.The importance of planning.

Parents hoping to raise bilingual (说双语的) children have long been given the advice to employ a strict one-parent-one-language approach. However, the findings from Concordia University's Infant Research Lab indicate that many families in Montreal don't abide by this model, with both parents frequently using both languages when communicating with their children. “This made sense to us, because there are a lot of adults in Montreal who are actively bilingual,” says Andrea Sander-Montant, lead
author of the study.
The researchers analyzed data from 300 families taking part in the lab's research between 2013 and 2020. They identified four main strategies used by the families:one-parent-one-language, both-parents-bilingual, one-parent-bilingual (where one parent uses both languages and the other uses one) and one-language-at-home (where one language is used at home and another one is used outside the home, such as at daycare).
The study found there wasn't a single strategy that could be singled out as “best” to raise a child bilingually. But when they looked at parents' language use individually rather than the family's overall strategy, the researchers had an unexpected and striking finding: mothers had up to twice the impact on language exposure compared to fathers. The influence of mothers was particularly clear in heritage-language families.
“We think this may be the case because mothers still spend more time at home than fathers. There may also be cultural factors at play, where mothers feel it is their responsibility to transmit (传播) the language,” says Sander-Montant.
“This points to a new way of talking about transmitting languages,” says Krista Byers-Heinlein, a professor in the Department of Psychology. “Rather than stressing about using this or that strategy, families can make a calculation of who is spending time with the child and then figure out how the child can receive enough experience in both languages from fluent speakers.” The researchers believe these findings will have a real-world impact for policymakers, health care workers and educators who closely work with and give advice to bilingual families.
8.What does the underlined phrase “abide by” in paragraph 1 refer to ( )
A.Follow. B.Perceive. C.Oppose. D.Transform.
9.What is the key factor in leading to the breakthrough of the study ( )
A.Long-held parenting beliefs. B.Conventional language guidelines.
C.Individual parental language use. D.Main strategies in bilingual families.
10.Why does the author quote Sander-Montant's words in paragraph 4 ( )
A.To introduce another topic. B.To prove the finding reasonable.
C.To highlight the role of mothers. D.To provide essential background.
11.What is Byers-Heinlein's suggestion for bilingual parents ( )
A.Sending children to bilingual schools.
B.Hiring a full-time language teacher.
C.Seeking advice from health care professionals.
D.Fully exposing kids to both fluent languages.

While conducting a workshop on creativity, I gave each small group a small box of paper clips (回形针). I invited each group to record as many different uses for a paper clip as they could in five minutes. Obviously, these third-grade student groups were able to generate multiple responses and the quality of those responses was all over the map. Their creativity was in full swing.
We often have this belief that when faced with a creative challenge, we need to generate a really good idea that will save the day. As a result, we focus on “the perfect idea” or “the best solution” without the necessity of generating lots of bad ones along the way. Yet producing unworkable, impractical, and worthless ideas is a necessary and essential part of the creative process.
One of the classic books, one that goes against the grain of what most writing instruction books do, is the incomparable Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg. One of the finest pieces of advice in the book is for writers and anyone trying to generate creative thoughts to give themselves permission to create crappy (蹩脚的) ideas.
Creativity is based on the concept of producing multiple ideas—ideas without any restrictions, definitions, or limitations. When we imagine the quality of an idea, we limit its effectiveness. When we pre-assess thoughts in advance of putting them into action, we reduce their worth or ultimate use. The impacts are shocking. There is an idea that a sustained focus on producing only “good” or “perfect” ideas forces us into a “don't take any risks” mindset and significantly reduces our creative spirit.
The solution when faced with a creative challenge: generate overmuch ideas without regard to their appropriateness or usefulness. Some of those ideas will be possibilities and some will be useless. That's OK. Ultimately, know this: generating crappy ideas is an essential part of the creative process. It's your brain with its “pedal (踏板) to the metal”.
12.What does the author believe about the creative process ( )
A.It must avoid taking any risks.
B.It requires some perfect ideas.
C.It's limited to practical solutions.
D.It should involve producing crappy ideas.
13.Why does the author mention the book Writing Down the Bones in paragraph 3 ( )
A.To explain a rule. B.To present a fact. C.To prove an opinion. D.To make a prediction.
14.What impact does focusing on perfect ideas have on creativity ( )
A.Enhancing risk-taking. B.Limiting logical thoughts.
C.Destroying creative spirit. D.Encouraging diverse thinking.
15.What would be the best title for this text ( )
A.How We Overcome Creative Blocks
B.Why It's Good to Have Crappy Ideas
C.The Ways of Generating Rich Creativity
D.The Importance of Increasing Writing Art

Thanksgiving is the official start of the eating season. The pounds gained during this time of year will likely be with you for a long time. And preventing weight gain is easier than weight loss. 16 Here's what I do.
I start the day with breakfast. It might feel against common sense to eat breakfast on Thanksgiving, especially if you “save” calories so you can eat more at Thanksgiving dinner. 17 It also saves you from discomfort from overeating in the evening.
With so much delicious food on the Thanksgiving table, we often overload our plates and stuff ourselves. I use a smaller plate to prevent overloading. I also use color-contrasting plates to control the portion (份量) of food I eat. Research shows that using plates that have a color contrast to the food you're eating for dinner can help you eat less. If you want to eat more of a food, you can use a dish of the same color. 18
Drinking at Thanksgiving is a necessity. Nevertheless, alcohol is calorie-rich, stimulates your appetite and may lead to overeating. 19 That helped me enjoy the festivities without affecting the achievement of my health goals. At present, alternating alcoholic drinks with water or fruit drinks is my choice.
20 I constantly work out in the morning. Then I can enjoy holiday activities and time with my family without worrying about when I'll have time to exercise. Whether at the gym or at home, exercise more so that you “burn” the extra calories you take in.
A.What I used to do was set a drink limit.
B.One day of overeating doesn't cause weight gain.
C.That's why I always have had a healthy Thanksgiving.
D.Skipping breakfast raises your risk of heart disease by 87%.
E.Try eating more green vegetables from a large green plate, for example.
F.However, it can help control your appetite and levels of hunger later on.
G.Besides eating and drinking, I also plan my workouts for the holiday week.

Three people I didn't know went out of their way to rescue my little horse from his own mistake. I will never forget their instant, unquestioning assistance.
One day, I was at work when my husband David called and told me something was wrong. He said I needed to go out to the grass farm where the horses were, and go now.
The grass farm was 20 minutes' drive from where I worked as an advertising designer in a small-town print shop. I had rented seven acres for my four horses to eat grass on, as I felt it made them much healthier to keep them outdoors than indoors.
My one-year-old horse rolled in the dirt too close to the wire fence and put his leg through it. When he stood up, his leg was caught. He struggled to get free. The fence wrapped around his back leg, cutting it to the bone.
Our neighbor boy Jimmy, only 10 years old, saw the little horse's trouble. He was very resourceful. Seeing a sign near the grass farm offering the little horse for sale, he called the number on the sign with his cell phone. He reached my husband, who then called me immediately.
By the time I got to the grass farm, no one was around but Jimmy. He came running to me and led me to a tree where the horse was put away. I discovered that the horse was tied to the tree with a halter (缰绳), which was unfamiliar to me. Approaching the horse, I was quite amazed that he was well taken care of, with his injuries beautifully dressed and bandaged. It was clear that a vet (兽医) was called in by someone else and cured the horse after he was cut loose from the fence. I thanked Jimmy and praised him for his quick thinking.
