第二节(满分25分)
范文:
Fearful and alone, I stood frozen as thunder rolled closer. The wind picked up, whipping sand against my legs, and raindrops began to fall down. Just as panic struck me, a silver sedan pulled up beside me. The window rolled down to reveal a middle-aged woman who had kind eyes. “You look like you could need some help,” she said, gesturing for me to get in. Without hesitation, I piled into her car, my relief drowning out the storm’s fury.
The kind lady drove me through the pounding rain toward a nearby Starbucks. She chatted calmly about the weather, her voice was steady in the chaos. Once inside, she bought me a hot coffee and insisted on waiting with me until AAA arrived. As we sat, the tornado alarm disappeared in the distance, but her presence turned the crisis into a strange, shared adventure. When the tow truck finally pulled up, she handed me her umbrella and smiled. “Good luck,” she said. “And maybe tomorrow will be your lucky day.” I watched her drive off, my heart oddly lighter—proof that even in misfortune, kindness could still shine through.

Dear Bruin Community:
Due to the destructive fires in our region, we have made the decision to cancel undergraduate classes and move graduate courses to remote instruction for the next two days. While there remains no immediate fire danger to our campus, given an expected change in wind direction in the hours ahead, it is likely that the air quality in Westwood will worsen. We will continue to monitor conditions in the area and are prepared to further adjust campus operations if need be.
For employees if you are able to work remotely, please contact your department director. They are asked to work directly with their employees to meet any critical staffing and operational needs on campus, while being understanding and flexible.
Our UCLA Health facilities will remain open and fully operational so we can continue treating patients during this time. For those who work in the UCLA Health clinical areas, you will receive further communications from UCLA Health.
Even as UCLA’s central focus is on protecting our students, faculty and staff, our university is doing what it can to support the broader L.A. community in a time of need. We are treating patients around the clock at our UCLA Health hospitals and adjusting facilities operations to preserve water for first responders. UCLA organizations have opened up their doors to provide free meals and other support to the community as well.
I want to personally thank our teams who have gone above and beyond to support Bruins and our neighboring communities during these times. Together, we will navigate this challenging period.
Sincerely,
Julio Frenk
Chancellor

My childhood was a painted picture of a sunny sky and rolling green fields stretching to the horizon. It tasted of sharp berries and smelt of sour grapes. My family lived in a cabin in the countryside, but I lived in my mother’s arms. They were so delicate but strong, and her red hair falling around me was like a curtain that separated me from the world.
Childhood was simple. The borders of my village were the furthest my troubles went and monsters only lived in the pages of books. Every day was a waking dream of running races and muddy knees. My village was archaic, dying cabins housing, dying farmers with dying traditions. There weren’t many children but me and the other boys; boys of butchers and sellers formed our own group.
They called us wild. I suppose we were. Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter. Liberated from the restrictions of society, we would bound into the woods, deeper and deeper until we found a lake which, with a wild yell, we would jump into all at once.
My most vivid memories from boyhood center around that lake. Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams broke into the outcry from birds. The shock of cold water against sweating skin would wake every nerve in my body and my bare feet would hit the sinking muddy bottom. As we submerged, time would stop, movements slowing as bubbles rose around us.
I was drowning. I was living. I was living. I was drowning. For timelessness or a second (both felt the same), we would pause, curl up, and then be forced back out into breathing air.
We should have known that it wouldn’t last forever. Yet, even under the best circumstances, there’s something so tragic about growing up: your perspective on the people and life around you changes; you always struggle to reach a mirror, only to find yourself tall enough to see your reflection one day and find a different person staring back out at you.
24. Why does the author describe his mother’s red hair as “a curtain that separated me from the world”
A. To show her artistic personality.
B. To illustrate his fascination with colors.
C. To emphasize her protective presence.
D. To reveal his fear of social interactions.
25. What does the underlined word “archaic” in paragraph 2 most probably mean

C. Mountain-ringed. D. Poverty-stricken.
26. What does the lake symbolize in the author’s boyhood memories
A. A dangerous pause in time. B. A mirror reflecting adulthood.
C. A place of social restrictions. D. A temporary escape from reality.
27. What message does the author convey in the last paragraph
A. Struggle and challenge make a man grow up.
B. Childhood joy is completely erased by growth.
C. Growth often brings unavoidable self-reinvention.
D. The regret of growth is that people and life always change.
C
Nobel committees recognized the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in two of the prizes for 2024 — honoring pioneers of neural (神经系统的) networks in the physics prize, and the developers of computational tools to study and design proteins in the chemistry prize. But not all researchers are happy.
Several physicists argued that the science underlying machine learning was not actually physics. “I like machine learning and artificial neural networks as much as the next person, but it’s hard to see that this is a physics discovery.” Jonathan Pritchard, an astrophysicist at Imperial College London.
Not everyone was troubled, however. “Hopfield and Hinton’s research brought together physics, math, computer science and neuroscience,” said Matt Strassler, a theoretical physicist at Harvard University, “In that sense, it belongs to all of these fields.” Anil Ananthaswamy, a science writer based in Berkeley, pointed out that although the research cited by the Nobel committee might not be theoretical physics in the purest sense, it is rooted in techniques and concepts from physics, such as energy. But Anil also added, the connection with physics became more delicate in upcoming developments in machine learning, particularly in techniques that made neural networks easier to train.
Computer science seemed to be completing its Nobel takeover the day after the physics prize announcement, when Demis Hassabis and John Jumper won half of the chemistry Nobel. The prize was a recognition of the innovative force of AI, but also of the steady gathering of knowledge in structural and computational biology. “It wasn’t just that we went to work, pressed the AI button, and then all went home,” Jumper said. “It was really an iterative (迭代的) process where we developed, we did research, we tried to find the right kind of combinations between what the community understood about proteins and how we build those insights into our architecture.”
Since they were first awarded in 1901, the Nobels have often highlighted the impact of research on society, and have rewarded practical inventions, not only pure science. In this respect, this year’s prizes are not outliers.
28. How did Jonathan Pritchard react to this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics
A. He praised the organizers. B. He doubted the discovery.
C. He congratulated the winners. D. He questioned the classification.
29. What do we know about Hopfield and Hinton’s research
A. It challenges traditional physics.
B. It lacks a solid connection with physics.
C. It demonstrates interdisciplinary features.
D. It involves more techniques than concepts.
30. What did Jumper owe their achievement to
A. The AI-powered iterative research.
B. The innovative research in architecture.
C. The community-driven research process.
D. The use of AI research for quick answers.
31. Which of the following questions does the text mainly address
A. Who won this year’s Nobels using AI
B. How do this year’s Nobels reflect AI’s role
C. Why are scientists against this year’s Nobels
D. What’s the outcome of this year’s Nobels debate
D
Nietzsche (尼采) was wrong: When you gaze long enough into the abyss(深渊), the abyss does not gaze back into you. Instead, the cosmic void (黑洞) remains silent, relentless and frightening in its vastness.
When looking at the vast emptiness of the universe, there is a temptation to look at our tiny world with nihilism. To feel that our great achievements amount to nothing. That our history fails to leave a mark. That our concerns and anxieties are pointless.
I’m a cosmologist, the kind of scientist who studies the origin, history and evolution of the universe. I have spent years working to understand what cosmic voids teach us. And in the course of my studies, I have learned to reject that temptation.
It’s true that Earth is neither large nor long-lived, but that is only one way of measuring pared with the cosmic voids, there is something special happening on our planet. Earth is still the only known place in the entire universe where conscious beings raise their curious eyes to the sky and wonder. Earth is the only known place where humans can exist. It is the only known place where laughter, love, anger and joy exist. The only known place where we can find dance, music, and art. Our disagreements and all the beautiful complexities that make us human aren’t meaningless. The experiences in our lives are special because they will never happen in the empty expanse of most of the universe.
The same lessons that cosmic voids teach us are found in the voids we encounter in our own lives. The presence of voids guarantees the opposite; they create contrast; they are full of potential. The pain we feel from loss is the last reminder of the gift of a life deeply loved. The silence before a performance is full of electric expectation. Our choice to ignore stressful news is necessary to allow us to focus on what truly matters.
Artists have long understood the power of the void. The 12th-century poet Saigyo noted that the pauses between raindrops were as important as the drops themselves. The famed architect Rem celebrated the utility of negative spaces, proclaiming, “Where there is nothing, everything is possible.”
The universe won’t do anything for us except give us the freedom to exist. It is our job to fill the universe with meaning and purpose.
32. What does the underlined word “nihilism” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Hope. B. Purpose C. Admiration. D. Meaninglessness.
33. Why does the author reject the temptation
A. He is a cosmologist who believes science.
B. Earth is the only place for human experiences.
C. Human experiences differ from those in voids.
D. Earth is special because it is small and short-lived.
34. What is the author doing in paragraph 5
A. Explaining how voids in life offer meaning.
B. Stating that voids in life should be avoided.
C. Criticizing the role of voids in universe and life.
D. Arguing voids should be filed for more meaning.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To clarify Nietzsche’s philosophy.
B. To explore the unique significance of voids.
C. To report a scientific study of cosmic voids.
D. To criticize passive views on human achievements.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Olympic medals are among the most respected honors in the sporting world, symbolizing not only athletic victory, but also the rich history, fine craftsmanship, and longstanding traditions of the Games. 36 Are they made entirely of gold, silver, and bronze And what makes the Paris 2024 Olympic medals special
Originally, Olympic winners in 776 BCE were honored with olive wreaths rather than medals. The concept of medals as we know them today first emerged at the 1896 Athens Games. However, solid gold medals were no longer awarded after 1912. 37 As a result, the International Olympic Committee later updated the regulations regarding medal composition and design.
Modern gold medals are primarily composed of 92.5% silver with a six-gram gold plating for appearance. 38 They contain at least 92.5% pure silver, and bronze medals consist of 95% copper and 5% zinc (锌). This mixture ensures the medals’ longevity and makes them cheaper. An Olympic gold medal may be worth over 500, but its value to athletes goes beyond its financial worth.
39 For instance, the 2012 London Olympics medals featured the River Thames and London skyline. Rio 2016 focused on sustainability by using leftover mirrors and X-ray plates. Tokyo 2020 medals, made from recycled electronics, emphasized technological innovation.
For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the medals are particularly distinctive. Each features a hexagon (六边形) with the Paris 2024 logo on one side and Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, in front of the Eiffel Tower on the other. 40 As Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, stated, “These medals offer athletes a physical piece of Paris to take home.”
A. Pure gold is soft and easily damaged.
B. When were these medals first introduced
C. Who is responsible for designing the medals
D. Silver medals, by contrast, live up to their names.
E. With these symbols, they honor the history of the Olympics.
F. Unique to this year, the medals use metal from the Eiffel Tower.
G. The design of medals reflects the host city’s distinct style and values.

Of course, looking up every word in a sentence is no fun. So when I was trying to read books in English, I adopted something similar to a weightlifting 42 : finding my comfort zone, then pushing a bit beyond it, 43 , and trying again. It did suck at the beginning but it wasn’t long before I could 44 more complexity. I made a goal to 45 material just above my comfortable level; if I felt 46 when I finished, the next book I chose would be a bit harder. If I got frustrated, I dialled down the 47 .
I embraced practice; the words I could understand were enough to keep me going, even if my 48 wasn’t perfect. Reading turned from self-imposed (自我强加的) “study” to a fun, sustainable 49 . Letting go of the 50 — embracing the fact that I didn’t understand every word — helped me 51 more ground, allowing me to see phrases and vocabulary over and over in hundreds of 52 , however imperfect. And I became 53 in the stories; I grew 54 of the characters and wanted to know what happened next.
It’s as though an ocean has opened up before me, and for now I’m just wading (蹚水) in the shallows — knowing that I’ll 55 someday.

I’m not known to be a particularly lucky person. Raffles (抽奖), t-shirt cannons, radio calls, random roommate selections — none of these ever seem to work out in my favor. But my fortune seemed to hit an all-time low last Monday.
The day started nice enough. I went to work, got off at five and decided to head to the beach. It was sweltering hot, and I knew the cool waters of Lake Michigan would help wash away my sweat. The first sign of trouble was when my cellphone navigation stopped working properly and showed the wrong directions. I was new to the area and didn’t quite know my way around yet, so I ended up taking a wrong turn and driving through a web of neighborhoods, turning a 10-minute drive into a 40-minute one.
But fine, I get lost often. I made it to the beach eventually. Took a quick dip in the water, had a bite of the butter paneer I had picked up earlier. I made it back to my car, pulling some clothes out to change into. As I headed to the restroom, I realized I had forgotten a shirt. So I walked back, tugged on the handle and realized with horror that my keys were sitting in the passenger seat of my car.
I called AAA (American Automobile Association). As it turns out, I don’t have an AAA membership. I called my parents and they anxiously tried to figure out how to add me to their card, while my phone battery was at 21% and dropping.
I called AAA again, and they informed me that they would be there in about an hour and a half, which seemed like a long time as I sat on top of the trunk of my car. The sun was lowering in the sky and the parking lot was emptying out. I heard thunder, and I saw people exiting the beach at an increasing rate. When I checked my weather app, I saw an alarming update: a heat advisory (预警), a 100% chance of a lightning storm, and a tornado warning.
