It was a boiling summer day in July. The sun shone brightly and the air felt heavy with heat. When I was advised to stay at home to avoid getting sunburned, my father came in from working outside, wiping sweat off his face. He said to me with a smile, “Look outside, Jesse! It’s hot enough to fry (煎) an egg on the road!”
After hearing what my father said, I looked at the sunlit road through the door, feeling doubtful. Could it really be that hot I decided to test this idea myself. I took an egg from our fridge and went out right away. Then I broke it and poured it out on the side of the road. I waited, hoping to see it cook. But nothing happened. The egg stayed as it was—no white edge formed, and there was no smell of cooking. I felt upset and went back inside, wondering why it didn’t work. I turned to my father for help. He thought for a while and said, “It wasn’t hot enough.”
I wanted to know how to solve the problem, so I asked my elder brother who is good at science for help. “Why not use a magnifying glass (放大镜) to shine on the egg ” He got a magnifying glass and explained that it could gather sunlight into one point, raising the temperature. “So we could fry the egg on the road in this way”, my brother said. I agreed with him.
This time, I placed the egg on a darker part of the road. Eric showed me how to hold the magnifying glass so that a small, bright light spot fell on the egg. At first, nothing changed. Then, slowly, the edges of the egg turned white and firm. After a few minutes, the egg was just fried! I was so excited to see it work.
I felt happy because I got new knowledge through practice. Later, I understood, “What others say is not always right. It only takes practice to find out whether it’s true or not.”

①What are glaciers (冰川) You can imagine them as hard ice and snow moving slowly on land. The United Nations (UN) says there are about 200,000 glaciers in the world, covering 10 percent of the land. They hold 70 percent of Earth’s fresh water, just like our huge “ice libraries”—store fresh water, support animals and plants, and provide water for rivers. Without them, many places would be short of water, cities near coasts could be under water, and animals might lose their homes.
②Sadly, glaciers are melting (融化) faster than ever because of climate (气候) change, pollution, rising temperatures and human activities. Glaciers are in great danger, so the UN has decided that 2025 is the year to protect glaciers.
③China has taken important steps to protect glaciers. Chinese scientists have invented special blankets (毯子) which can stop glaciers from getting too hot from the sun. They cover a 500-square-meter area with blankets made of geotextiles (土工织物) at Dagu Glacier in Sichuan. They also make snow to help glaciers stay cold and melt more slowly. In April and May, 2023, scientists did this in the Bailanghe Glacier. It’s very important to watch glaciers carefully. In Tianshan Mountains, scientists use modern technology to watch glaciers for 24 hours, and local villagers report changes in the glaciers every day on the phone. China also makes laws to stop pollution near glacier areas.
④Protecting glaciers might seem like a huge task, but even small daily choices can help. Glaciers don’t have voices but we do. Every snowflake counts. Let’s speak up for them and start with simple actions right now!

Most people learn good manners as children, but sometimes when they grow up, they forget to use them. However, it’s important to have good manners all the time, because they show kindness and respect for others.
Saying “please” and “thank you” are among the simplest ways of being polite. They’re ways of showing that you notice and you are thankful for the nice things someone does for you. If you don’t, you’re treating someone like a servant who has to do whatever you say and you don’t care that someone takes the time to help you.
When I was a child, I didn’t like writing thank-you notes every time my mom asked me to. But as an adult, I’ve received thank-you notes that always make me smile on hard days. I’ve learned that taking the time to write these notes is a great way to make someone feel loved and special.
Saying “excuse me” is an easy way to get someone’s attention and show your good manners. Whether you’re asking for directions or needing help, starting with “excuse me” shows that you value the other person’s time and mind their feelings. This small phrase helps to continue the conversation freely.
Sometimes, good manners may require silence. Listening to others carefully and silently shows that you value the person speaking. Also avoid disturbing someone who is talking with someone else in person or on the phone. In most cases, what they are talking about may be more important than what you have to say.
Remember, good manners are not just about following rules; they are about making others feel valued and respected.

Each season has its special beauty, but my favorite is spring.
It’s a lively season. The weather is pleasant, with the sun shining brightly and the wind blowing gently. Colorful flowers come out, trees grow fresh leaves and birds sing sweet songs as if they’re welcoming the new season. In spring, I enjoy outdoor activities with my family and friends. On sunny days, we have picnics in the park, eating snacks and enjoying the sunshine. When it’s windy, my friends and I fly kites together. It’s great fun to see the kites dancing in the wind.
Spring makes me feel comfortable and hopeful. It shows me that after cold days, there’s always warmth and beauty.
