In an adaptation(改编)of the book with the same name, the film Eat, Pray, Love brings the star power of Julia Roberts to the big screen. What Gilbert learns, however, is that things aren’t always as they appear to be.
After going through an unhappy marriage(婚姻), Gilbert decides to go and find her new life. All that she thought would bring her happiness in family life had failed to do so. “I used to have great passion(热情) for my life, and it’s just gone,” she says. To make things better, Gilbert sets off to spend a year travelling around the world.
First, she goes to Italy. There she learns to truly enjoy the food and eat for pleasure. Then she goes on to India. There she finds out how helpful prayer(祈祷)can actually be for people. Who says kids can’t make a difference In Missouri, a group of students is changing lives around the world! How are they doing this They’re buying farm animals!
Millions of people live with little food and money, so the gift of an animal can actually save lives. More than 10 years ago, the second-graders at Forsyth School learned about how Heifer International helps people. They decided they wanted to help too.
Heifer International has been helping poor people for almost 70 years. It gives farm animals to poor people and teaches them how to use the animals to improve their lives. A heifer is a young cow. Families with a cow can produce milk. They can drink or trade the milk for other things they need.
Animals save lives in other ways too. Strong animals, such as water buffaloes(水牛), can plow(犁) land. Families with a water buffalo can grow more food to eat and to sell. Heifer also gives such animals as goats, sheep, camels, and even bees to families in need.
Each second-grade class at the school decides which animals to buy and how much to give to special projects. The students’ favourite part of working with Heifer is that they can help others. They don’t want kids their age to be without home or food.
The students raise money by recycling bottles and doing handwork. Some even give away birthday or holiday gifts to Heifer! A water buffalo costs $250: that’s a lot of recycled bottles!
Kids can do many things to help others. Your class might want to raise money for Heifer too. You might also want to give your money or your time to a group in your community that helps people. Why not talk with your classmates about how your school can help others

In the modern world, some people think learning traditional skills is out of date(过时的). It’s easy for them to go shopping online and enjoy services with phones. Why do they learn how to grow food, sew, or make home products in the present 33. But the interest in these skills is increasing, not only as a fashion, but as a way to be more connected to the past. 36. Let’s see the reasons why learning traditional skills is more important than ever before.
Self-reliance(自力更生) is great. Knowing how to grow food, fix clothes, or save food is useful. It’s important to care for yourself and your family without needing much help from others.
It also helps us become stronger. The more you can do for yourself, the less you worry about what may happen. You can meet your own basic needs, like food and clothes.
These skills are part of our history. Things like knitting(编织) or woodworking were important in the past. Learning and teaching these skills keeps them alive.
Making things for yourself is interesting. In a fast-changing world of modern science, making something by hand, like bread or furniture, feels really satisfying.
Mastering these traditional skills also helps you make friends with others. When you learn traditional skills, you often meet others who like the same things. Sharing seeds with gardeners or joining a knitting group connects you with others. And you will discover something amazing.
Finally, these skills help us relax. Tasks like mixing dough or fixing clothes let us enjoy and focus on the present. They also help us not depend so much on the fast-changing world.
In this way, we can feel more relaxed.
( ) 33. Why do people still learn traditional skills now according to the passage

Technology has changed our lives a lot. Now, let me show you some examples.
Firstly, in the past, most people went to work by bike. Now people go by bus, by underground and by car. Next, in the present, we are able to get news through TV, computers and smart phones instead of radios. What’s more, shopping on the Internet has become more and more common in our daily lives. It is convenient and time-saving. We don’t have to go from one shop to another to choose what we want any more.
I hope technology will change our lives more greatly and make our lives much better in the future. I am looking forward to it.
