Look at the picture. A girl is spinning a hula hoop, one of the most famous toys in history. Hula hoops can date back to 500 BC as a form of cultural activity or exercise. But we didn’t fully understand how hula hoop stays up or why some people are naturally good at it until recently.
In 2024, a team from New York University made progress. They used 3D-printed robots of different shapes, like cylinders and hourglasses (圆筒和沙漏). Engines made these robots spin hula hoops. By recording the movements with high-speed cameras and studying them with software, scientists found two key points.
First, for stable (稳定的) spinning, the hoop must start spinning fast enough in the same direction as the robot’s body. The centrifugal force and friction (离心力和摩擦力) work together to keep the hoop stable. Second, robots with hourglass shapes were best at keeping the hoop up for a long time. Their “hips” push up the hoop, and their “curved waist” holds it in place.
These findings suggest that people with hourglass shapes may be natural hoopers. But don’t worry. “Real humans aren’t robots. Anyone can learn with practice!” says Leif Ristroph, one of the scientists.
Before the research, considering hula hoop’s long history, people might think hula hoops had already been studied to death. But the findings not only help to explain the familiar but poorly understood activity but may also point to some possible uses in life.
26.What is mentioned about hula hoops in paragraph 1
A.The practice skills. B.The cultural importance.
C.The famous inventor. D.The unanswered questions.

B.Hula hoop movement can be done with practice.
C.Humans are different from robots in doing sports.
D.People with hourglass shapes do well in hula hoops.
30.What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs

Most Chinese know the famous tale of Ne Zha. After his untimely death, the young hero has his body remade out of lotus root (莲藕). Today, the ancient story is brought back to life by a group of Chinese scientists.
For a long time, bone repairs have been quite painful and expensive. Doctors used steel pieces as a scaffold to hold the patient’s bone together. Once the bone grows back, they would need to take out the scaffold. Now, there is less trouble for the doctors and the patients. Dr. Jiang Xueyu and her research team at Wuhan Polytechnic University has managed to make a scaffold out of the fiber (纤维) from lotus root. The new scaffold is believed to be safer and more affordable for patients.
★ The most important quality is its “friendliness”. Our immune system (免疫系统) reacts badly to what it thinks to be foreign. That’s why if you have a heart problem, you can't just use any heart you find. Unlike a “foreign” heart, the fiber won’t be easily noticed by our system as “foreign”. Besides, it can last for the right time. The lotus fiber can hold up for 180 days-strong enough for the bone to grow back. When the bone has fully recovered, it will break down and disappear. So patients won’t need to have it taken out.
“We are not as magical as Tai Yi Zhen Ren so as to create life, but from the common lotus we managed to find power to help people.” Dr. Jiang said with a smile. The greatest technology can come from simple and imaginative ideas. Next time when you look into a bowl of delicious food or any daily things, a future scientific discovery probably lies within!
31.The research team used fiber from the lotus root to _______.
A.help patients B.cook food C.remake Ne Zha D.spread culture
32.A scaffold is something that _______.
A.causes a lot of pain B.holds heavy weights
C.keeps things together D.costs patients less money
33.Which of the following can be put in ★
A.Lotus fiber has many medical advantages.
B.Dr. Jiang overcame countless difficulties.
C.The new scaffold is actually very expensive.
D.Doctors use the creation to treat heart disease.
34.What does Dr. Jiang stress in paragraph 4
A.Researchers are not able to do magic.
B.Creativity may make simple ideas valuable.
C.Many technologies also come from traditions.
D.Delicious food is important when creating life.
35.Which would be the best picture for the passage
A.B. C. D.

Bebeto could hear his parents discussing his sister Ana’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of the toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew.
This birthday would be different, though. Ana was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Zulma’s Presents, a neighbourhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he fell asleep.
After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a burlap sack (麻布袋). Then he tied the sack to the handlebars of his bicycle and headed out of the town.
Shortly after, he rode past a group of his friends playing soccer. “Come on over, Bebeto,” they called. “You’re just in time!”
“Sorry, guys. Not today,” he answered.
After a long ride, he reached the mango grove (果园).
There were already two other boys there, standing among some smaller trees and picking fruit from the lower branches. Bebeto set to work right away. Nearly all of the trees held ripe (熟的) mangoes, but they were well beyond reach. He used his pocketknife to cut a long piece of bamboo growing at the edge of the grove. Then he took the tin can from the sack, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of a mature mango tree. He stayed there, poking (戳) the tin can high up into the tree. After a while, his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore (酸痛的). He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his sack was nearly full.
Bebeto reached her store just as Zulma was closing—in time to exchange some of his mangoes for the doll.
The following morning, Ana walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.
“Good morning, birthday girl,” said her mother, pouring her a glass of juice. “I hear your brother has a special surprise for you today.”
Just then, Bebeto came in, carrying a large bowl of mangoes. He placed it on the table before Ana.
“Happy birthday, Sis,” he said.
“My favourite fruit—thank you, Bebeto!” said Ana. She reached for the bowl and picked up the top mango. Then her eyes widened, and her smile beamed even brighter. There, nestled among the fruit, was the new doll.
36.Why was Bebeto planning to buy Ana a doll as a present
A.He liked the doll and wanted to play with it too.
B.He was tired of making homemade gifts for his sister.
C.He saw Ana was attracted to the doll and wanted to make her happy.
D.He didn’t want Ana to be different from other girls in the neighbourhood.
37.What did Bebeto do with the tin can while trying to pick the mangoes
A.He used the tin can to cut the ripe mangoes in the tree.
B.He threw the tin can at the mangoes to make them fall.
C.He placed the tin can on the ground to collect the mangoes.
D.He tied the tin can to a stick and poked the mangoes with it.
38.What can we infer from the story
A.In general, Ana preferred fruits to dolls.
B.Bebeto was a caring brother in the family.
C.The family couldn’t afford store-bought gifts.
D.Bebeto was often absent from the boys’ soccer games.
39.What is the best title for the story
A.A Homemade Gift B.Anna’s Dream Doll
C.The Best-selling Fruit D.The Mango-Filled Surprise

D.A teenager makes cakes to sell at a market, and then buys a comic book for a friend.

To many foreigners, Chinese characters may seem like a random (任意的) mix of lines. But to Lena, a 20-year-old girl from Northern Virginia, US, each one tells its own story.
In her eyes, the character “kan (侃) “ looks like a singing jellyfish (水母), and the traditional form of “wu (無)” lets her think of a sheep. Then, she tried to draw them as she saw them. To her surprise, after she posted the picture “wu” online, many loved it. Then, she noticed that many Chinese characters “stood out as looking like different objects”. Now, thanks to Lena’s drawings, more people are thinking about language, art and cultural exchange. Some people think that Lena seems to understand the beauty of Chinese characters even better than many Chinese people.
“ ★ ” said Lena. She said that the reverse (反过来) is also true. For example, she learned from her Chinese friends that the letters “orz” together look like a person kneeling (下跪) to say sorry. But it carries no meaning in English.
Lena’s story shows that language is more than just words. She also encourages Chinese learners to talk with native (母语的) English speakers. “It’s more fun if you are teaching them your language and they’re teaching you theirs at the same time because then it’s more of a cultural exchange.”
41.The examples in paragraph 2 shows ________.

Last month, I read a book called The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It tells a 5 1 story told through the eyes of a dog named Enzo.
Enzo lives with his 52 Denny, a car racer and experiences the ups and downs of life with him. He sees Denny work hard to succeed and go through the unexpected death of 53 wife Jennifer.
The book shows the heartwarming relationship between Enzo 54 Denny. Denny treats Enzo as a close friend and family member, telling him his secret 55 racing in the rain. Enzo is loyal(忠诚的) to his owner, always supporting and comforting Denny in his own way during the 56 periods of Denny’s life. Seeing their special relationship moved me a lot.
While reading The Art of Racing in the Rain, I learned three big lessons. First, life is like racing in the rain: when problems come 57 , just like a car sliding(侧滑) on wet roads, we need to stay calm. Second, Denny, the main character, shows us that facing difficulties bravely is better than hiding from them. But the 58 lesson hit me the hardest: even when life feels completely out of control, never stop trying. Enzo and Denny’s story taught me that the hardest storms can end with sunshine.
Stein writes in the book, “There is no shame in losing the race. The shame is in not racing because you fear failure.” From his words, I learned that we should be 59 when facing challenges instead of running away from them. Also, we need to look on the bright side because, as Stein says, “The car goes where your eyes go.” This means that how we treat 60 influences the result.
The Art of Racing in the Rain is a book about love and life. It touched me and taught me a lot.

It takes just a quick glance (一瞥), maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate (评估) you when you meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you. The following chart shows you how impressions are made.
Making Impressions People form a first impression in about four minutes. ● First, they notice your eye contact and body language as well as appearance and clothing. ● Then they notice how you speak—your tone (音调), how fast you talk, how loudly you speak, and how you pronounce your words. ● Finally, they listen to what you say.
When People Listen to You.What they learn comes from the words you use □What they learn comes from the sound of your voice ■What they learn comes from your body language and facial expressions
With every new meeting, you are evaluated and yet another person’s impression of you is formed. These first impressions can be nearly impossible to change, and they often set the tone (基调) for the relationship that follows. So, it’s important that you know how to create a great first impression. This article provides some useful tips to help you do this.
Plan ahead. First of all, planning ahead is a necessary thing to do. Whether you’re talking in a private room or at a wide hall, the most important thing you can do is to make yourself heard, loud and clear. This can be not easy for an introvert (内向的人)—and for the rest of us. The key: preparation. Feeling prepared will make you relaxed and also improve your confidence.
Making preparations. If you’re interviewing for a job, take advantage of the Internet to know the information about the company. If you’re going on a date, plan some talking points, even if they’re just about some favorite TV shows or movies.
Make proper eye contacts with others while listening to others. Good eye contacts mean the
other person is reacting to what you are doing or saying. If someone looks at you while you’re talking,
you probably think the person is smart.
Take a proper posture. Finally, a proper posture can also help in making a good impression. Openness can carry the meaning of confidence. To show self-confidence in a meeting, you can sit up straight and leave your arms widely spread at your sides. Holding the posture for just two minutes can lower stress and increase feelings of power.

76.例文
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
We’ve done a survey on “advantages and disadvantages of paper bags” and collected different ideas.
On the point of environment protecting, they are friendly to the environment and they are recycled easily. They can also be recycled. But they also have disadvantages. To make more paper bags, we need to cut down more forests. They also waste more wood. They are also relatively expensive. In my life, I often carry things in paper bags. They are more convenient to carry. They are also lighter and thinner. When we use them to carry things, it will be more dignified. But sometimes they’re not strong enough to hold heavy things. They are also very easy to break. Of course, if they encounter a lot of water, they can’t hold anything.
In conclusion, protecting the environment is the most important.
