Growing up in the hot Las Vegas desert, all I wanted was to be free. I would daydream about traveling the world, living in a place where it snowed.
At the age of 19, the day after I graduated from high school, I moved to a place where it snowed and I found my dream job. For the first time in my life, I felt free, independent and completely in control of my life. That is, until my life took a detour (转折点). I went home from work early one day with what I thought was the flu, and less than 24 hours later I was in the hospital on life support with less than a 2% chance of living.
Over the course of two and a half months I lost the hearing in my left ear and both of my legs below the knee. I thought the worst was over until weeks later when I saw my new artificial legs for the first time. They were so painful that all I could think was, how am I ever going to travel the world in these things And how was I going to snowboard again
But I knew that in order to move forward, I had to let go of the old Self and learn to embrace the new Self. And that is when it dawned on me that if I snowboarded again, my feet aren’t going to get cold.
Four months later I was back up on a snowboard, although things didn’t go quite as expected: My knees and my ankles wouldn’t bend. But I knew that I would be able to do this again if I could find the right pair of feet.
I did a year of research, still couldn’t figure out what kind of legs to use. So I decided to make a pair myself. My leg maker and I put random parts together and we made a pair of feet that I could snowboard in. Then in 2005 I cofounded a nonprofit organization for youth with physical disabilities so they could get involved with action sports.
Eleven years ago, when I lost my legs, I had no idea what to expect. But if you ask me today, if I would ever want to change my situation, I would have to say no. Because my legs haven’t disabled me. They’ve forced me to rely on my imagination and to believe in the possibilities.
4.What was the author’s reaction upon seeing her new legs for the first time
A.Encouraged. B.Hopeless. C.Shocked. D.Thrilled.
5.Which element most contributed to the author changing her thought toward her situation
A.The assistance from a nonprofit organization. B.The inspiration from research.
C.The passion for snowboard. D.The optimistic attitude.
6.Her efforts might create opportunities for physically challenged young people like herself to ________.
A.wander the Earth B.flex their knees and ankles
C.participate in action sports D.recover from their disabilities
7.What does this article convey
A.A willing heart makes everything possible. B.Deeds carry more weight than words.
C.Skill grows through persistent effort. D.Don’t judge a book by its binding.
While some allergies (过敏症) disappear over time or with treatment, others last a lifetime. For decades, scientists have been searching for the source of these lifetime allergies.
Recently, researchers found that memory B cells may be involved. These cells produce a different class of antibodies known as IgG, which ward off viral infections. But no one had identified exactly which of those cells were recalling allergens or how they switched to making the IgE antibodies responsible for allergies. To uncover the mysterious cells, two research teams took a deep dive into the immune (免疫的) cells of people with allergies and some without.
Immunologist Joshua Koenig and colleagues examined more than 90,000 memory B cells from six people with birch allergies, four people allergic to dust mites and five people with no allergies. Using a technique called RNA sequencing, the team identified specific memory B cells, which they named MBC2s, that make antibodies and proteins associated with the immune response that causes allergies.
In another experiment, Koeni g and colleagues used a peanut protein to go fishing for memory B cells from people with peanut allergies. The team pulled out the same type of cells found in people with birch and dust mite allergies. In people with peanut allergies, those cells increased in number and produced IgE antibodies as the people started treatment to desensitize them to peanut allergens.
Another group led by Maria Curotto de Lafaille, an immunologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, also found that similar cells were more plentiful in 58 children allergic to peanuts than in 13 kids without allergies. The team found that the cells are ready to switch from making protective IgG antibodies to allergy-causing IgE antibodies. Even before the switch, the cells were making RNA for IgE but didn’t produce the protein. Making that RNA enables the cells to switch the ty pe of antibodies they make when they encounter allergens. The signal to switch partially depends on a protein called JAK, the group discovered. “Stopping JAK from sending the signal could help prevent the memory cells from switching to IgE production,” Lafaille says. She also predicts that allergists may be able to examine aspects of these memory cells to forecast whether a patient’s allergy is likely to last or disappear with time or treatment.
“Knowing which population of cells store allergies in long-term memory may eventually help scientists identify other ways to kill the allergy cells,” says Cecilia Berin, an immunologist at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “You could potentially get rid of not only your peanut allergy but also all of your allergies.”
8.Scientists examined the immune cells of people with allergies and those without ________.
A.To identify the cells that protect against allergic reactions.
B.To reveal cells contributing to allergy development.
C.To discover new antibodies known as IgG and IgE.
D.To compare the distinctions between IgG and IgE.
9.What is the most likely meaning of the underlined word “desensitize” in Paragraph 4
A.Make…reduce protection. B.Make…reduce efficacy.
C.Make…less responsive. D.Make…less harmful.
10.What can we infer from the two research teams’ work
A.JAK plays a part in maintaining antibody production during allergen challenge.
B.Memory B cells generate both RNA for IgE and the corresponding protein.
C.MBC2s generate antibodies and proteins that prevent allergies.
D.Allergists can predict whether an allergy will last or disappear.
11.Which is the best title for the passage
A.RNA Sequencing Serves in Immunology Research
B.Specific Cells Related to Peanut Allergies Are Identified
C.Newfound Immune Cells Are the Cause of Long-lasting Allergies
D.Unmasking Cells’ Identities Helps Identify and Manage Allergic Conditions
From ordering food to buying a new book to making a charitable donation, more and more decisions that used to be made on paper are now being made on digital devices like tablets, phones, and computers. And this trend towards digitization has many advantages, in particular when it comes to efficiency and sustainability — but could it also be negatively influencing how we make decisions
We conducted a series of studies with more than 2,500 participants across the U. S. and China to explore the impact of the medium you use to make a decision, with a particular focus on decisions with some sort of moral component, such as whether or not to make a donation to a charity, or whether to choose a healthy or unhealthy entrée (主菜) at a restaurant. We asked the participants to make a variety of these sorts of choices using either a paper form or a digital tablet, and despite controlling for all other variables (变量), we consistently found that people who used paper made more moral decisions than those who used a digital device. For example, participants who read their choices and made a selection on paper were significantly more likely to give money to charity, choose a healthy entree, and opt for an educational book rather than something more entertaining.
Why might this be Our research suggests that the key mechanism driving this effect is how “real” the decision feels. We asked participants in two of our studies to describe how real a decision felt, as well as the extent to which they believed the decision as representing who they were as people, and they consistently indicated that making a choice on paper felt more real and representative than making the same decision on a digital device.
It may seem like a minor detail, but our research shows that the medium with which your customers, employees, or community members make a decision can have a major impact on the choices they make. This has implications (暗示) for marketers, policymakers, and anyone seeking to encourage any sort of virtuous behaviour. For example, to encourage customers to choose healthier options, restaurants might consider opting for paper rather than digital menus. Similarly, parents and educators might opt to provide students with paper rather than online book order forms, to increase the chances that they’ll choose educational reading materials.
12.What can be drawn from the studies
A.People using paper to make a more virtuous decision.
B.Digitalization drives our life more different and sustainable.
C.When deciding, participants prefer paper to a digital devices.
D.The medium involved in decision-making significantly influences us.
13.What is the main mechanism of this influence mentioned in the text
A.People’s concern about their identity when making decisions on paper.
B.The real feeling linked to making decisions on paper.
C.Public resistance to trend towards digitalization.
D.The consciousness of environmental protection.
14.What can we infer from the last paragraph about the results of the study
A.It can stand the long-term evaluation.
B.It makes sense without exception.
C.It has room for improvement.
D.It offers practical value.
15.What’s the key point of the text
A.Educational reading resources should be supplied in the form of paper.
B.Using pen and paper contributes to making more moral choices.
C.Everyone should make a responsible choice.
D.Pen and paper needn’t be replaced.
How hardships make you stronger
Past hardships can help you carry on in the face of current stress. People who experienced a medium level of hardship reported better mental health and higher life satisfaction over time compared to both those who reported a high history of hardship and those with no history of hardship. 16
They can bring growth after sufferings. We may find it difficult to believe the suffering experiences will eventually lead to some type of growth. 17 . Post-traumatic (创伤后的) growth is the experience of positive change after going through a significantly stressful event. Researchers have discovered two common themes that people tend to report after experiencing a stressful event: spiritual growth and improved personal strength.
They build self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the belief or the confidence in your ability to overcome difficulties and succeed. 18 First, pick, pick an area of confidence or a skill you want to develop. The best way to improve that skill is to learn by doing. If you want to improve your public speaking skills and ability, then you need to practice speaking in public. 19 Back to the public speaking example, you could watch video clips of great speakers on YouTube and take notes on how they tell stories or use humor. Lastly, you can improve by being coached by a credible and respected source. Meanwhile, you could turn to the people for help who can give you feedback as you work toward your goals.
They help you transform stress into a challenge. How you think about stress matters enormously in terms of how you process it. 20 , while others are able to see it as a challenge. With a challenge response, you get additional energy. In fact, people who are able to think about stress more like a challenge and less like a threat report less depression and anxiety, higher levels of energy, work performance and life satisfaction.
A.Your world feels out of control right now and your stress has reached unprecedented levels
B.The truth is that we gain the ability to become stronger after experiencing difficulties
C.Even small past struggles with difficulties can help you overcome tough situations
D.The reason is that past struggles can makes you stronger in the following ways
E.Observing others is the next most effective improvement strategy
F.It’s evolved through three distinct ways
G.Some people regard stress as a threat

Austin rose early this morning. He tugged forcefully at his sister Amelia’s sleeping bag. “Wake up,” he urged. “It’s a perfect day for adventure.”
After eating, they pulled on their boots, grabbed their backpacks, and headed along the overgrown track.
After hiking for some time, Amelia paused unexpectedly. “Look,” she said, pointing through the trees. “An old hut with an old car. Someone must have lived here years ago.”
“They might be here even now,” said Austin.
“Probably not,” said Amelia. “Why would anyone want to live in that old dump ”
“Well, let’s just check.” Austin threw a handful of stones at the hut door, making loud noise.
Abruptly, an old man with gray hair and a beard rushed out of the hut, waving a frying pan and shouting, “What do you think you are doing Get off my land! You are not allowed here!”
Austin and Amelia had never seen anyone so frightening. His eyes were wide and he was swinging the frying pan around.
“Run!” Austin yelled.
The two started running as if they were deer pursued by a hungry lion. Wild thoughts raced through Amelia’s mind. What if he caught them He looked half crazy. They kept running for quite a while. Austin was well ahead of Amelia. He glanced behind, no the hut man. Great. Wait, no Amelia! Where is she !
“Amelia!” Austin shouted. Silence. He could feel fear. Something terrible must have happened to Amelia. Austin felt it hard to breathe.
Suddenly, he heard a faint sound, a depressed moan. Then he heard Amelia’s voice; it was a panicky voice and far away. “Help! Help!”
He moved forward carefully towards Amelia’s voice, knelt down and found himself peering into a deep, dark hole. Amelia was sitting at the bottom of the hole, sobbing, with her leg bleeding. Austin could see the steep, slippery walls of the hole. There was no way he could save Amelia out on his own. He could feel his heart pounding but he had to keep calm, for Amelia’s sake.注意:

Austin realized only one person was left to ask for help. Without hesitation, he rushed to the hut. His heart beating fiercely, Austin knocked on the door cautiously. The door was open and there stood the old man, staring at him. Austin gathered all his courage, murmured an apology and begged the old man to save Amelia. With no reply, Austin’s heart sank and he ducked his head, trying to hide tears. At the critical moment, the old man turned around, searching for something. Austin waited outside, worried and expectant.
Finding a long rope and some wood, the hut man followed Austin. Arriving at the hole, the hut man lit the wood so that they could gain a clear sight into the hole. “Amelia! Are you all right ” “No...” Answered Amelia in a shaky voice. The hut man slowly threw one end of the rope into the hole with the other in his hands, “Fasten his rope to your waist and grasp it tightly. We will pull you out.” Amelia did it accordingly. They finally made it! Tears in eyes, the two siblings looked at the kind and forgiving old man, saying in earnest, “Thank you so much.”
