In the howling wind, he heard faint voices through the chaos. “Jack! Where are you ” The desperate cries pierced the thunderstorm. Through blurred vision, he saw his father’s figure battling the storm, flashlight beam slicing through the downpour. His mother’s trembling hands clawed at the fallen branch, her trimmed nails caked with mud and blood. “Hold on, son!” his father roared, shoulders straining against the massive limb. Jack gasped as the weight lifted slightly, his choked apology swallowed by the tempest. “We’ve got you,” his mother whispered fiercely, rain and tears streaming down her face.
In the ambulance, Jack’s vision blurred. His father’s calloused palm pressed against his cheek—a touch he hadn’t felt since childhood. “Your math teacher called,” his mother choked out, stroking his hair. “She said you stayed up helping classmates... We thought...” The beeping sound from the surveillance screen is like a guilty heartbeat. Jack’s trembling fingers found his parents’ intertwined hands. “The trip... maybe next year ” he asked. His father’s laughter sounded suspiciously wet. “We’ll get tents,” he vowed. Through pain and morphine haze, Jack finally saw it—the fear behind their rules, the love disguising as control.
(In the howling wind, he heard faint voices through the chaos.)
“stumbling towards”“sobs mixed with the thunder” 等细节,生动刻画了父母在恶劣天气下焦急寻找杰克的模样,展现出父母对孩子深深的爱与担忧。
(In the ambulance, Jack’s vision blurred.)

In the howling wind, he heard faint voices through the chaos. “Jack, where are you!” His mother’s panicked scream sliced through the downpour. Through the blur of rain, he saw his father’s broad figure lunging towards him, flashlight beams dancing wildly. When they reached him, his mother collapsed beside him, tears streaming down her rain - soaked face. “Hold on,” she begged, fingers digging into his cold hand. His father, sweating despite the chill, heaved the branch away. In that moment, Jack realized the “control” he resented was just fear - fear of losing him.
In the ambulance, Jack’s vision blurred. Pain shot through his leg, but the ache in his heart was worse. Memories flooded back: his father patiently explaining math problems, his mother leaving encouraging notes in his lunchbox. “I was so stupid,” he croaked, squeezing his mother’s hand. Her eyes widened in shock, then filled with tears. Jack knew that love wasn’t always gentle, but it was always there, even in the fiercest storms.
In the howling wind, he heard faint voices through the chaos. “Jack! Answer me!” His parents’ cries echoed through the storm. Straining his eyes, he saw them pushing through the underbrush, their clothes muddy and faces pale with worry. His mother fell to her knees beside him, her hands trembling as she cradled his head. “Please be okay,” she sobbed. His father, grunting with effort, managed to shift the branch. As their eyes met, Jack finally saw past his anger—saw the raw fear in their eyes, the love he’d ignored.
In the ambulance, Jack’s vision blurred. Every jolt sent pain coursing through him, but his mind was consumed by regret. He remembered all the times his parents supported him, even when he pushed them away. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, looking at his mother’s tear - stained face. She smiled through her tears, squeezing his hand. Jack realized that family wasn’t about perfection; it was about weathering storms together, and he was ready to build bridges, not walls.

M: Good afternoon, everyone. Have you ever wondered how technology is shaping our lives Today, I’d like to talk about a fascinating development in the tech world — the rise of smart homes. Smart homes use Internet-connected devices to automate tasks such as controlling lighting, heating, and even security systems. These systems are designed to make life more convenient and efficient. For example, with a simple voice command, you can adjust the temperature in your house or turn off the lights. Many people find these features very useful, especially for elderly or disabled individuals who may have difficulty with regular tasks. However, as with any new technology, there are concerns about privacy and security. It’s important to consider both the benefits and risks when deciding whether a smart home is right for you. In the next session, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages in more detail.

After I discovered Diet Coke in 1984, I drank at least three 12-ounce cans nearly every day for the next four decades. I was the person who avoided certain airlines because they only served Pepsi. At various times I tried to stop, but I could never prevent myself from drinking it for longer than a week.
This year, something happened that changed everything. I had been feeling pain in the left side of my stomach for months, but doctors were unable to figure out the problem. At the same time, I began noticing that my beloved drink left an awful aftertaste I had never noticed before. In late June, after opening up my second can of the day, pains shot across my stomach, and that was my last soda. Just like that, I was done, after 39 years. Why did it take so long Was I truly psychologically dependent, or was it simply a bad habit?
The American Psychiatric Association doesn’t specifically list Diet Coke addiction. However, research indicates its addictive potential. Ashley Gearhardt at the University of Michigan points to the two “culprits” that can be found in Diet Coke: aspartame and caffeine. Aspartame, 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, and caffeine work together to keep us desiring more.
As of now, I’m on Day 41 of being Diet Coke-free. The initial days were extremely difficult due to caffeine withdrawal, but I’m committed to maintaining this new lifestyle. My stomach hurts less, and my sweet tooth is not as persistent. I am quite pleased with myself for having altered a lifelong habit. If I can do this, I can do anything, even if it takes 40 years.
What can be inferred about the author from paragraph 1
A. Diet Coke was an inseparable part of his life.
B. He tried various ways to stop drinking Diet Coke.
C. Diet Coke was less popular before he discovered it.
D. He preferred to take flights which didn’t offer Pepsi.
25. What made the author decide to change
A. A doctor’s accurate diagnosis. B. An unexpected shot on his stomach.
C. Personal persistent headaches. D. His unfavorable physical reactions.
26. What can replace the underlined word “culprits” in paragraph 3
A. initials B. sponsors C. agents D. sweeteners
27. How does the author feel about giving up Diet Coke
A. Accomplished. B. Disappointed. C. Enthusiastic. D. Conservative.
C
Most people see innovation as a flash of brilliance and Eureka, a new world is born. When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacteria culture he had grown was infected by fungus (霉菌), killing any colonies it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and seemingly in a single stroke, created the new field of antibiotics. The truth, however, is messier. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use.
To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards (产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving scorn instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular miasma theory, which attributed disease to “bad airs”. After his death in 1865, germ theory was accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War II raging, the War Production Board enlisted 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
Penicillin owes much of its success to government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other visionaries and corporations, who might have the resources to fast-track their ideas. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius and the “eureka moment” breaks down.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about

Online marketplaces for goods and services are increasingly valuable and powerful. When it comes to their reputation systems, they typically take the form of five-star ratings. While the systems are good enough at identifying and weeding out very low-quality products or suppliers, they do a poor job of separating good from great products or suppliers.
This may not be a big issue for marketplaces offering basic, mass-market products and services (e.g. Uber or Didi), but it can be a serious problem for marketplaces where it is important to allow truly great providers to differentiate themselves clearly.
In their current application, five-star rating systems suffer from several shortcomings. Lacking motivations for providing truthful feedback, users who have extreme experiences (either very bad or very good) are much more likely to leave feedback than users who have average experiences, thus creating selection biases. Ratings are also likely to experience “grade” inflation, so that in some marketplaces having a 4.8-star average, or 96%positive feedback, does not mean that the supplier is particularly exceptional. And on some marketplaces, the difference between 4.5 stars and 4.8 stars could be massive, making it hard for users to differentiate OK suppliers from very good ones.
Several options are available to offer users a more precise sense of suppliers’ relative ranking. A basic thing they could do would be to show users the average score for all suppliers in the relevant category. By seeing the whole distribution and where the supplier fits in it, the user could quickly get a sense of the overall situation. The second key measure advocated is to adjust user ratings for differences in reviewing behavior. Specifically, a given user’s review could be given a larger weight if there is a higher variance in the individual’s reviewer scores (in contrast to someone who always gives the same or similar score).
Although rating systems alone can’t guarantee trust and safety in online marketplaces, applying these measures can make rating systems more reliable and reduce the need for additional services.
What role can five-star rating systems play in online marketplaces

C. They can make online platforms look more reliable.
D. They can ensure consumers always get the best quality.

34. What helps users better understand suppliers’ relative ranking

Many adults are proud to share their fascinations with what others would label as kids’ toys. 37._________ Seeking and sparking child-like joy may be part of the appeal, said behavioral therapist Maddy Ellberger. “When something reminds us of a positive memory, we are likely to engage with it because the association recalls those memories.”

Ellberger has a great idea for this. “You are into a certain trend like toys. There’s a good chance you’ll find others who are into the same trend. 40._________ If it was part of a person’s secret Santa or white elephant -- that’s a really cute way of connecting over this,” she said.

Seventeen-year-old Jack slammed his bedroom door with such force that the framed family photo rattled on the wall, the glass trembling as if mirroring his broken relationship with his parents. Another Friday night wasted on arguments. How could they possibly ban him from the camping trip—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with his friends—just because of a C+ in math “Safety first,” his father had explained, but Jack thought he knew the truth, It was all about control. They treated him like a lab rat, monitoring his every move.
At dinner, the tension built up like a pressure cooker. “ You track my grades like I’m some science experiment!” Jack shouted, roughly pushing his untouched lasagna aside. The dish banged noisily on the table, tomato sauce splattering the white tablecloth like bloodstains. His father’s knuckles (指关节) whitened around the fork, a vein beating in his temple. “Language, young man,” his mother warned, her voice unsteady. Normally so calm, she now looked like a leaf caught in a storm.
Jack stormed out into the September rainstorm, the door slamming behind him like a final punctuation mark. Raindrops stung his face, icy needles against his flushed skin. He didn’t care. Let them worry. Let them see how much they’d hurt him. Mud and water splashed beneath his sneakers as he walked slowly toward the woods, and the outline of the old oak tree ahead looked like a huge giant. Thunders shook the ground, and a jagged bolt of lightning split the sky. Jack froze as an earsplitting crack burst above—a sound like the world breaking in two. Before he could make any reaction, a massive oak branch crashed down, falling on him. Sharp pain burst out, burning and constant, pinning him to the muddy earth.
