GUANGDONG — “Twinkle, twinkle, little star, which one is your eye ...” The enchanting melody (旋律), sung by a group of autistic (自闭症的) people from the Aite ensemble (乐团) , is as comforting as the starry sky.
With the sounds of various musical instruments in perfect harmony and the gentle voice of their teacher humming a merry tune, the group is lost in the world of music in a classroom at the Sunshine Cultural and Sports Center in Nanshan district, Shenzhen.
The musical journey of this ensemble started with the mother of one member, Beibei. At 20, Beibei started to learn piano, for which he showed great talent and interests. With the efforts and company of his mother, Sun Lili, he made something of himself in competitions and on TV.
“Many people got to know Beibei through music and gradually came to understand the autistic community. I wondered if we could bring those with autistic disorders together and connect them in the world of music,” says Sun. Then born the idea of creating an ensemble in 2013.
It was a rough ride at the time when it started. There was no training space or teacher. Sun decided to use her home as a classroom and invited Beibei’s piano teacher in to lead the ensemble. As it takes longer for autistic people to interpret information, their mothers must memorize all the key points in class and practice the musical pieces with their children at home until they master them. Sun still remembers the members’ sweat-soaked shirts and the mothers’ eyes filled with tears of joy.
Expanding from one to 12 members, with donations from many kind people and organizations, the Aite ensemble has experienced a difficult yet impressive 10-year journey. The voices of “these twinkling stars” are heard by more people now.
Why did Sun decide to establish the Aite ensemble
Because she felt the needs of autistic people from her son’s experience.
Because she determined to start up her own business to support her son.
Because her son talented at playing piano had an idea for training others.
Because some mothers of autistic children had encouraged her to do so.
What difficulties did Sun meet when starting the ensemble
The members were unwilling to get trained.
There was a lack of teachers and classrooms.
The process of teaching was very challenging.
She couldn’t afford to buy musical instruments.
Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word “interpret”
share B. explain C.collect D. understand
What might be the best title of the passage
A tough journey to great success
Great mothers raise excellent sons
Stars twinkling in the Aite ensemble
Fight with autistic spectrum disorders
C
As we all know, trees are always stationary: they stay more or less where you plant them, and no one worries about finding a tree wandering around a park or back yard.
However, there is one special exception, some say: the so called walking palm tree(棕桐树) was found in the rainforests of Central and South America. Many people believe it can really walk around. This is because of its unusual root system: while most trees have one trunk, the palm breaks into many smaller roots a few feet off the ground, giving it the appearance of many little legs.
The amazing walking ability of the palm tree has always been told by rainforest guides to tourists for years, and appears in many sources of documents as an amazing plant adaptation. As journalist Sherry Seethaler writes in her book Curious Folks Ask 2: “Screen writers searching for the perfect B-movie(小成本电影) plant hero could take inspiration from the walking palm. The tree slowly walks from shade to sunlight by growing new roots toward the light.”
A tree that walks in search of the sun is a fascinating, strange story. And it’s not true either; the tree is real enough, but it doesn’t walk. It sits where it began to grow, not moving except under the force of wind or an axe.
Biologist Gerardo Avalos is one of the world’s top experts on the palm tree. His analysis of the plant and its roots shows that the walking tree can’t walk because its roots don’t move. A few roots on one side or another may die off, but the trunk itself remains, well, rooted to the spot.
“My paper proves that the belief of the walking palm is just a myth,” Avalos said. “Thinking that a palm tree could actually track the sunlight changes by moving slowly over the forest floor... is a myth that tourist guides find amusing to tell visitors to the rainforest.”
28. What is the reason for no worries about wandering trees
A. Trees are not always moving. B.Trees are not always standing.
C. Trees are not always growing. D. Trees are not always dying.
29. Why do people think the palm tree can walk around
A. It has no roots underground. B. It appears to have many little legs. C. It grows a few feet off the ground. D.It appears to have several trunks.
30. What can we learn about the palm tree from the passage
A. It wanders around the rainforest at night.
B. It grows in Central and North America.
C. It is a popular attraction among visitors.
D. It grows well in the shade of the rainforests.
31. What does biologist Gerardo Avalos believe
A. The palm tree can track the sunlight.
B. The palm tree can move its roots.
C. The palm tree cannot actually walk at all.
D. The palm tree cannot keep its trunk growing.
D
Chinese shadow puppetry, or Piyingxi, is one of the most ancient art forms to make use of light and shadow, originating thousands of years.
On January 1, 2023, the China National Arts and Crafts Museum, also known as the China Intangible Culture Heritage Museum, arranged an exhibition (展览) of shadow puppetry from the northwestern province of Shaanxi, showcasing more than 200 exhibits and artifacts (文物) on this longstanding art.
The history of the art can date back to the Han Dynasty, with Shaanxi considered one of its birthplace. Widely distributed (分布) across China, especially in rural areas, its many genres change according to the different culture of each location. Generally, each change is a combination of art forms involving painting, carving, music, opera performance and storytelling.
Nowadays, as art and entertainment have become more diverse, not only in various forms, but also easy to attract attention, shadow puppetry has finally lost its popularity. If there is no protection, it is likely to disappear in a certain period of time. However, artists and enthusiasts who have always taken a deep love for this art form have found new ways to help it survive. Many shadow puppetry museums have been established to show people the traditional development of shadow play. This art form also has been introduced to the primary school students, building up their love for it from an early age.
In 2011, Chinese shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List, allowing this traditional art form to be alive again. This is not only good news for shadow puppetry lovers, but for our future generations.

I love learning foreign languages so much that I learn a new language every two years. When people find I’m a polyglot(通晓多种语言的人), they always ask me, “How do you do that ” Honestly, my answer will be, “I don’t know. I simply love learning languages.” 36 They want to know why they spend years learning even one language, never achieving fluency, and what’s the secret of being polyglots.
37 And what do we have in common I decided to find that out. I went to several events where language lovers gather to practice their languages, asked dozens of polyglots about methods they use, and heard dozens of approaches. Everybody seems to have a unique way to speak several languages fluently.
38 All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. They found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity. You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. 39 The methods are various, but they make sure it’s something enjoyable.
I realized it’s actually how I learn. 40 Then interesting programs became my choice. So all is clear. If you don’t like writing words down on paper, type them in an app. If you’re a shy person, apply self-talk at home. This is how polyglots learn languages, and the best news is that it’s available to anyone willing to take the learning into their own hands.
A. How can those with little talent be fluent B. But people are never happy with the reply. C. One of them even made recipes in a foreign language. D. There’s no shortcut to learning languages for anyone. E.When learning Spanish last year, I was bored with textbooks. F. That made me wonder, too, how other polyglots actually do it. G. Polyglots simply found ways to enjoy the language-learning process.

读后续写(25分)
Possible version1
She stood by the window, watching. The street had just come to life, still empty. Her legs only allowed her to stand for a while. She knew she’d better sit and wait patiently. But today was her birthday, she could be a little capricious(任性的;善变的). As her mind was wandering, the postman came into her sight. Johnnie ran up and it seemed that he was handed something. The next minute, an envelope was brought up to her. It was from Myra. “Is it the present ” asked Johnnie. She forced a smile, not knowing what to answer.
Suddenly the doorbell rang, she thought it would be another postman who sent parcels(包裹). Almost unwillingly, she tore the envelope open. It was a birthday card, on which Myra wished her a happy birthday and apologized for not being with her. Instantly tears welled up and the card slipped onto the floor. “Granny, there is another line at the bottom”. She cast a glance. “We are to arrive at 2 p. m., millions of love”. Overcome with a mixture of relief and joy, she couldn't hold back tears. This was definitely the best present she had ever expected.
Possible version2
She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate. Then clatter, clatter up the stairs. Johnnie knocked at her door. “Granny, granny,” he shouted, “I’ve got your post.” He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra’s writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment. “No parcel, Johnnie ” “No, granny.” Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.
Suddenly the doorbell rang, she thought it would be another postman who sent parcels(包裹). Almost unwillingly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday — Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque slipped onto the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stopped to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers she tore it into little bits.

My husband and I spent a few weeks in London last year. We went there in autumn. We thought it was the best season to visit England. The weather was usually quite good and there were not too many tourists in October.
We stayed in a small hotel in the West End. We did most of our sightseeing on foot. We went shopping and spent a lot of money. What we liked most was going to the theater. We don't have a lot of chances to see such wonderful plays at home. A lot of people said English food was very bad, but we didn't think so. It was true that most of the restaurants were French, Italian or Chinese, but we had some very good meals.
In fact, we enjoyed our holiday so much that we have already decided to go there again next year. We are going to take our umbrellas, though. I'm sure we will need them sooner or later.
